Indian Navy SSR Medical Assistant
Indian Navy SSR Medical Assistant is a recruitment exam for assistant-cadre recruitment, relevant to candidates preparing for nursing and paramedical government recruitment.
The Indian Navy SSR Medical Assistant entry, officially called Senior Secondary Recruits in the Medical Branch or SSR (Medical), recruits unmarried male candidates with 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology as sailors in the Navy's Medical Branch. Recruitment is run by the Directorate of Manpower Planning and Recruitment at Naval Headquarters, and applications are taken online through the official Join Indian Navy portal.
The latest cycle is the SSR (Medical) 02/2027 batch. Applications closed on 06 April 2026, Stage I (INET) was held in May 2026, and Stage II is scheduled for March 2027 (tentative). This guide covers the entry type, eligibility, exam pattern, syllabus, physical standards, pay and preparation, so you can see the whole process in one place before moving to the detailed pages.

Is SSR Medical Assistant an Agniveer Entry?
No. Many pages and search results label this post "Agniveer SSR Medical Assistant", but the official SSR (Medical) notifications for the 02/2024, 02/2025, 02/2026 and 02/2027 batches describe enrolment as regular sailors with an initial engagement of 20 years, subject to successful completion of training. Pay follows the Defence Pay Matrix, and post-retirement benefits such as pension and gratuity are mentioned, subject to government orders.
The confusion comes from timing. The Navy usually opens Agniveer (SSR), Agniveer (MR) and SSR (Medical) applications in the same window, and all three share the Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET). The key differences are below.
Point | SSR (Medical) | Agniveer (SSR) |
|---|---|---|
Scheme | Regular sailor enrolment | Agnipath scheme |
Engagement | Initial 20 years | Four years, with a share of each batch considered for further enrolment |
10+2 subjects | Physics, Chemistry, Biology | Mathematics and Physics with Chemistry, Biology or Computer Science (check that notification) |
Pay | Defence Pay Matrix Level 3 plus MSP and DA | Fixed Agniveer package with Seva Nidhi |
If you have studied PCB without Mathematics, SSR (Medical) is the Navy sailor entry built for you. Always read the notification for the batch you apply to, because terms are set batch by batch.
Latest Notification: SSR (Medical) 02/2027 Batch
The Navy invited online applications from unmarried male candidates for the SSR (Medical) 02/2027 batch from 14 March to 06 April 2026. Stage I was the computer-based INET 2026. The main points of this cycle are:
Same exam, two sittings: The Stage II written exam follows the same format as INET, so the same preparation serves both stages.
Exemption route: Sponsored candidates and NCC 'C' certificate holders whose documents are verified skip INET and receive a direct Stage II call-up.
State-wise merit: Shortlisting and the final select list are prepared state-wise, so the qualifying score differs from state to state.
Vacancies: The notification does not announce a single total vacancy figure; positions are allotted state-wise.

Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification
Candidates need 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology from a board recognised by the Ministry of Education. You must score at least 50% in aggregate and at least 40% in each of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Students appearing in the Class 12 board exams of 2025-26 could apply, but must later produce original marksheets showing the minimum marks.
Age Limit
Batch | Date of birth (both dates inclusive) |
|---|---|
02/2027 (latest) | 01 May 2005 to 31 October 2009 |
02/2026 | 01 July 2005 to 31 December 2008 |
02/2025 | 01 September 2004 to 29 February 2008 |
The age band is set as a date-of-birth window for each batch, and the notifications reviewed do not list category-wise relaxation. Check the window in the notification for your batch rather than relying on an age in years.
Other Conditions
Gender and marital status: Only unmarried male candidates are eligible.
Physical standards: Minimum height of 157 cm, prescribed vision standards and a mandatory PFT.
Tattoos: Permanent tattoos are allowed only on the inner forearm (inside of the elbow to the wrist) and on the back of the hand.
For the complete rules, read the Indian Navy SSR Medical Assistant eligibility guide.
Application Fee and How to Apply
Item | Fee |
|---|---|
Examination fee (all candidates) | Rs. 550 plus 18% GST, paid online at Stage I |
Common Service Centre facility (optional) | Rs. 60 plus GST |
Stage II | No separate fee |
The fee is non-refundable and is paid through net banking, debit or credit card or UPI. When the next batch opens, the process usually runs as follows:
Register on the official Join Indian Navy portal with a valid email ID and mobile number.
Log in, choose the SSR (Medical) entry and fill in personal, educational and contact details exactly as in your certificates.
Upload a recent colour photograph and documents as specified, and choose three exam city preferences.
Pay the fee online and keep the payment confirmation.
Use the correction window if needed, then download the call-up letter cum admit card from the dashboard before the exam.
For the 02/2027 batch, the photograph had to be taken on or after March 2026, sized 10 to 50 KB, with the candidate holding a black slate showing name and date in white chalk capitals. Common reasons for rejection include multiple applications, details that do not match original documents, an old or non-compliant photograph and missing the minimum subject marks.
Selection Process
Stage I, INET: A one-hour computer-based test of 100 questions. You must pass every section and the aggregate. Shortlisting for Stage II is state-wise.
Physical Fitness Test: Mandatory at Stage II. Only PFT qualifiers move ahead.
Stage II written exam: Same format as INET. The provisional select list is drawn up from this exam, state-wise.
Recruitment medical: Conducted for PFT qualifiers. A candidate declared unfit may appeal within five days at a designated military hospital.
Pre-enrolment medical at INS Chilka: Final medical check before induction into training.
If INET cannot be held, or for service reasons, the Navy may shortlist on Class 12 or Class 10 board marks instead.
Exam Pattern
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
English | 25 (indicative) | 25 |
Science | 25 (indicative) | 25 |
Biology | 25 (indicative) | 25 |
General Awareness | 25 (indicative) | 25 |
Total | 100 | 100 |
The paper is bilingual (Hindi and English), at 10+2 level, and lasts one hour. Each question carries 1 mark and 0.25 marks are deducted for a wrong answer. The latest notification lists the four sections and the 100-question total; the equal 25-mark split comes from the 02/2024 notification, so treat it as indicative.
What this means for you:
Speed matters: You get about 36 seconds per question, so routine questions must be quick.
No weak section: A sectional pass is required, so neglecting English or General Awareness can end your attempt.
Guess with care: Four blind guesses that go wrong cost a full mark.

The notification says the questions are at 10+2 level and refers candidates to the official website for the syllabus. The topic list above is a working checklist built from the section names and the Class 11 and 12 curriculum. The Indian Navy SSR Medical Assistant syllabus page breaks it down further.

Salary and Career Growth
Stage | Pay (official) |
|---|---|
Initial training | Stipend of Rs. 14,600 per month |
After training | Level 3, Rs. 21,700 to Rs. 69,100, plus MSP Rs. 5,200 per month and DA |
Highest sailor rank (Master Chief Petty Officer-I) | Level 8, Rs. 47,600 to Rs. 1,51,100, plus MSP and DA |
Other benefits include free food, accommodation and uniforms during training, medical cover, leave travel concession, children's education allowance, and an insurance cover of Rs. 75 lakh on contribution. Sailors who clear the required exams and Services Selection Board can also be considered for promotion to commissioned officer rank.
How to Prepare
Start with Biology and Science: Together they form about half the paper and build directly on your Class 11 and 12 NCERT books.
Keep English and GA daily: Spend 30 to 40 minutes on grammar practice and current affairs so these sections never fall below the pass mark.
Train for the PFT early: Build up to the 1.6 km run well before Stage II, alongside squats, push-ups and sit-ups.
Take timed mocks: Practise 100 questions in 60 minutes and review every wrong answer, since each one costs 1.25 marks against a correct attempt.
Cut-off and Shortlisting
The Navy does not publish a single cut-off for SSR (Medical). Candidates must clear each section and the aggregate, and the Navy decides the pass marks. Shortlisting is state-wise, so the qualifying mark varies by state depending on vacancies allotted and the scores of candidates from that state. When two candidates are tied, the one with the earlier date of birth is preferred.
Because no official figures are released, aim for a clear margin in every section rather than a bare pass. The SSR Medical Assistant cut-off guide explains how to set your target. For official notices, check the Join Indian Navy website: https://www.joinindiannavy.gov.in/
