Indian Navy SSR Medical Assistant Exam Pattern 2026: INET and Stage II
The Indian Navy SSR Medical Assistant exam pattern has two main stages. Stage I is the Indian Navy Entrance Test (INET), a one-hour computer-based test of 100 questions. Stage II brings a Physical Fitness Test, a written exam in the same format as INET and a recruitment medical, followed by a final medical at INS Chilka before induction.
This page explains the SSR (Medical) 02/2027 pattern section by section, how marking and negative marking work, which stage decides your final merit and how to use your 60 minutes. Because you sit the same style of paper twice, understanding the pattern early helps you prepare once and score well at both stages.

Key Changes to Know
INET replaced marks-based shortlisting: For the 02/2024 batch, candidates were shortlisted on their 10+2 Physics, Chemistry and Biology marks. From the 2025 cycle, the computer-based INET is Stage I.
Biology, not Mathematics: The SSR (Medical) paper has a Biology section. Pages showing Mathematics are describing the Agniveer (SSR) paper.
Fourth section name: The 02/2024 notice used "General Awareness/Reasoning Ability"; the latest notice says General Awareness.
Fallback rule: If INET cannot be conducted, or for service reasons, the Navy may shortlist on Class 12 or Class 10 board marks.
Stage I: INET Pattern
Section | Questions | Marks | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
English | 25 (indicative) | 25 | 10+2 |
Science (Physics and Chemistry) | 25 (indicative) | 25 | 10+2 |
Biology | 25 (indicative) | 25 | 10+2 |
General Awareness | 25 (indicative) | 25 | General |
Total | 100 | 100 | 1 hour |
The 02/2027 notification confirms 100 multiple-choice questions with four options and one correct answer, 1 mark each, in four sections, with a one-hour time limit. The equal split of 25 per section was printed in the 02/2024 notification; the latest notice does not repeat it, so treat the per-section numbers as indicative.
Rules That Apply to INET
Language: The paper is bilingual, in Hindi and English.
Sectional and aggregate pass: You must pass every section and the aggregate. The Navy decides the pass marks.
Exam centre: You give three city preferences, but the Navy may allot any centre at its discretion. The centre cannot be changed once allotted.
Exemption: Verified sponsored candidates and NCC 'C' certificate holders do not take INET and are called directly to Stage II.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Response | Marks |
|---|---|
Correct answer | +1 |
Wrong answer | minus 0.25 |
Question left blank | 0 |
Unanswered questions carry no penalty. A worked example shows how this plays out: if you attempt 80 questions and get 68 right and 12 wrong, your score is 68 minus 3, which is 65 out of 100. If you had attempted 92 questions with 70 right and 22 wrong, your score would be 70 minus 5.5, which is 64.5. More attempts with lower accuracy gave a lower score.
Score Table for Quick Reference
Correct | Wrong | Blank | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
60 | 8 | 32 | 58 |
70 | 10 | 20 | 67.5 |
75 | 20 | 5 | 70 |
80 | 8 | 12 | 78 |
Compare the second and third rows: five extra correct answers bought with ten extra wrong ones raise the score by only 2.5 marks. Accuracy is the cheaper way to gain marks.
What the Pattern Means for You
About 36 seconds per question: With 100 questions in 60 minutes, quick recall of facts in Biology, GA and English is what creates time for Science numericals.
A wrong guess costs 1.25 marks of swing: You lose the 1 mark you could have earned and 0.25 more. Guess only when you can eliminate two options.
No section can be weak: The sectional pass rule means a low score in English or GA can end your attempt even with a strong total.
Biology and Science carry about half the paper: Put the largest share of your study hours there, without dropping daily English and GA practice.
A practical time plan for the 60 minutes:
Section | Suggested time | Why |
|---|---|---|
General Awareness | 8 minutes | You either know the answer or you do not |
English | 12 minutes | Grammar and vocabulary are quick; a passage takes longer |
Biology | 14 minutes | Mostly fact-based, some diagrams and processes |
Science | 18 minutes | Physics and Chemistry numericals need working |
Review | 8 minutes | Return to marked questions |
This split is a suggestion, not an official rule. Adjust it after your first few full-length mocks.
Section-wise Approach
English
Most questions test a rule: tense, article, preposition or agreement. Read the full sentence before looking at the options, and check the subject and the time reference first. Leave long passages for the end of the section if they slow you down.
Science
Answer concept and unit questions first, then come back to numericals. Most numericals need one formula and one step, so a clean formula sheet in your memory saves the most time. If a calculation is running past a minute, mark it and move on.
Biology
Biology questions are usually direct. Work through them in one quick pass and do not overthink familiar facts. Watch for options that differ by one word, such as two similar hormones or two parts of the nephron.
General Awareness
Answer what you know immediately. Do not spend time trying to recall an unfamiliar fact; a blank costs nothing, while a wrong answer costs 0.25 marks.
Stage II: Physical Fitness Test
Candidates shortlisted from INET, and verified exempted candidates, are called for Stage II. The PFT comes first and is mandatory.
Event | Standard (male) |
|---|---|
1.6 km run | Within 6 minutes 30 seconds |
Squats (uthak baithak) | 20 |
Push-ups | 15 |
Bent-knee sit-ups | 15 |
Only candidates who qualify in the PFT take the Stage II written exam and the recruitment medical. The notification also lists proficiency in sports, swimming and extracurricular activities as desirable.
Stage II: Written Exam
The Stage II written exam follows the same format as INET: 100 bilingual objective questions in English, Science, Biology and General Awareness, one hour, with a pass required in every section and the aggregate. This is the score on which the provisional select list is prepared, so it matters more than your INET score.
For the 02/2027 batch, the gap between Stage I (May 2026) and Stage II (March 2027, tentative) is long. Use it to fix weak sections, keep current affairs up to date and stay in exam rhythm with regular full-length mocks.
Recruitment Medical and Final Medical
Standard | Requirement |
|---|---|
Height | Minimum 157 cm (relaxation rules on the official website) |
Vision | 6/12 uncorrected and 6/6 corrected in each eye |
Colour perception | Must pass |
Tattoos | Permanent tattoos only on the inner forearm and the back of the hand |
Recruitment medical: Held at Stage II for PFT qualifiers, by military doctors.
Appeal: A candidate declared unfit may seek a review medical within five days at a designated military hospital. Certificates from other hospitals are not accepted.
Pre-enrolment medical: Selected candidates undergo a final medical at INS Chilka before enrolment.
Documents by Stage
Stage | Carry or keep ready |
|---|---|
Application | Recent colour photograph to the notified specification, Class 10 and 12 details, domicile details, NCC 'C' or sponsorship certificate if claiming exemption |
Stage I INET | Call-up letter cum admit card downloaded from the website, as instructed on it |
Stage II | Call-up letter and original certificates, marksheets, domicile certificate and NCC documents, matching the online application |
INS Chilka | All originals again, plus a verified Police Verification Form for selected candidates |
A mismatch between your originals and the online application at any stage can cancel your candidature, so check every detail before you submit.
How the Final Merit Is Prepared
The provisional select list is prepared state-wise on the basis of the Stage II written exam, for candidates who qualify the PFT and the recruitment medical. Because vacancies are allotted state by state, two candidates with the same score can have different outcomes depending on their state. If candidates are tied, the one with the earlier date of birth is placed higher.
For example, suppose a state has a limited number of seats and three candidates qualify the PFT and medical with written scores of 71, 68 and 68. The candidate with 71 is placed first. Between the two candidates on 68, the one born earlier is placed ahead. Selection is valid only for the batch applied for and does not carry over to the next one.
Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy
Download your call-up letter cum admit card early: It is available on the website about a week before the exam; nothing is sent by post.
Reach on time: Candidates reporting 30 minutes after the reporting time are not admitted. Mobile phones and communication devices are not allowed.
Do a first pass for sure answers: Answer everything you know in one quick round, mark the rest and keep moving.
Protect every section: Make sure you have attempted enough sure questions in each section to clear its pass mark before chasing extra marks elsewhere.
Use the review time wisely: Revisit marked questions where you can eliminate options; leave pure guesses blank.
