IEO Cut Off and Level 2 Qualification Criteria

The IEO has no pass or fail cut-off like a job exam. What matters is the Level 1 cut-off, which decides who moves to Level 2, and the rank rules that decide awards. The Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) publishes the Level 1 cut-off class by class after the results, and the 2026-27 figures are not out yet.

This page explains how qualification works, shows the official Level 1 cut-off for 2025-26 as a benchmark, and covers ranking and result rules.

How Students Qualify for Level 2

A student of classes 3 to 12 qualifies for Level 2 by meeting any one of these conditions.

  • Class-wise top 5%: The student is in the top 5% of students of the class who appeared for Level 1.

  • Zone-wise top 25: The student is among the top 25 rank holders of the class in the zone.

  • School class topper: The topper of a class qualifies if at least 10 students of that class appeared and the topper scored at least 50%.

Classes 1 and 2 have a single level, so there is no cut-off for them. If Level 2 is not held in a state, Level 1 results are final there.

These are the top 5% figures from the official SOF page at https://sofworld.org/sof-ieo-cut-2025-26. They are not the 2026-27 cut-off. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty and the number of participants, so treat last year's figures as a benchmark only.

What the Cut Off Tells You

The 2025-26 totals ranged from about 70% to 85% of the paper, which means the top 5% route needs a high and balanced score. SOF's page says a student scoring more than the listed total qualifies, and it does not clearly say whether a score equal to the total also qualifies. Aim for a clear margin above the figure.

Ranks, Awards and Results

  • Level 2 ranking: Rank is decided by Level 2 total marks, then Level 2 priority sections, then Level 1 total, then Level 1 sections. Students tied on all four share a rank.

  • Awards: Level 1 rank holders in the top 25 of a class in a zone receive a medal and certificate. Level 2 brings international and zonal cash awards, as listed on the https://sofworld.org/ieo/about-ieo-exam/awards page. A student receives only the highest award earned in one exam.

  • Result declaration: Results come within 8 weeks of the exam, are sent to schools and are posted online. Each student gets a Student Progress Report.

  • Last year's Level 2 dates: 8 February 2026 for the rest of India and 15 February 2026 for Maharashtra. The 2026-27 date is not fixed yet.

For rank rules, see the official page at https://sofworld.org/rankings.
