IEO Exam Pattern Sections, Marks and Duration

The IEO exam pattern is short and simple on the surface: an objective paper of 60 minutes with four sections at Level 1 and three at Level 2. The details that matter are how marks are spread across sections, which section breaks ties, and how the paper changes between classes 1 to 4 and classes 5 to 12.

This page lays out the 2026-27 pattern published by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), explains what each section tests, and turns the numbers into a practical plan for the 60 minutes. Section splits have been reported differently on older pages, so always confirm against the official source listed at the end.

What Each Section Tests

Word and Structure Knowledge

This is the grammar and vocabulary section: parts of speech, tenses, voice, narration, spellings, synonyms, antonyms, collocations, idioms and phrasal verbs, with the depth rising by class. It is the largest section at both levels.

Reading

Ten questions test whether a student can find and understand information in everyday texts such as messages, notices, timetables, letters and, in higher classes, editorials and essays.

Spoken and Written Expression

Five Level 1 questions check whether a student can choose the right expression for a situation, such as an apology, a request, a compliment or an offer. Pronunciation also appears in the topic lists for some classes.

Achievers Section

These five questions test higher-order thinking and are drawn from the topics of the other sections. They are the same size in both levels and carry the highest marks per question. The IEO syllabus page lists the topics class by class.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

Marks per question are fixed by section: 1 mark for Word and Structure, Reading and Spoken and Written Expression, and 2 or 3 marks for each Achievers question, depending on the class band. The official pattern pages do not mention negative marking, and they do not state a pass mark. We have therefore not assumed one. Check the marking instructions in your school's SOF prospectus and on the question paper itself.

Until that is confirmed, a safe habit is to attempt every question you can reason through and to avoid pure guessing on the Achievers Section, where a wrong answer costs a chance at 2 or 3 marks.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • Grammar and vocabulary carry the paper: In classes 5 to 12, Word and Structure is half of Level 1 (30 of 60 marks) and over half of Level 2 (35 of 60 marks).

  • Five questions are worth a quarter of the marks: The Achievers Section is 15 of 60 marks in classes 5 to 12 and 10 of 40 in classes 1 to 4.

  • Reading is a steady scorer: Ten marks come from ten questions, and regular reading practice improves speed and accuracy.

  • Expression is small but quick: Spoken and Written Expression is 5 marks in Level 1 only, so it should not take more than a few minutes.

How Ranks and Ties Are Decided

A higher total score gives a higher rank. If total marks are tied, SOF compares section marks in a fixed priority order: the Achievers Section first, then Word and Structure Knowledge, then Reading, then Spoken and Written Expression. Two students tied on every section share the same rank.

At Level 2, rank is decided by the Level 2 total, then the Level 2 higher-priority sections, then the Level 1 total, then the Level 1 sections.

Time Management in the 60 Minutes

For classes 5 to 12 the average is about 72 seconds per question, and for classes 1 to 4 it is about 100 seconds. These are averages, so the real plan should give grammar questions less time and reading and Achievers questions more.

  1. Start with the quick marks: Attempt spelling, vocabulary and grammar items first, aiming for about 20 to 25 minutes in classes 5 to 12.

  2. Move to Reading next: Read the question before the passage, then scan for the answer.

  3. Do Spoken and Written Expression quickly: Pick the most natural reply for the situation.

  4. Leave 12 to 15 minutes for the Achievers Section: Work these carefully and use any spare time to recheck.

Timed practice makes this plan natural.

Older Pages and the Official Source

Older pages and third-party articles still show earlier section splits and last year's dates, and some tables are garbled. Follow the official SOF pattern page and your school's circulars instead.
