IEO Eligibility 2026-27: Who Can Appear and How to Register
IEO eligibility is based on a student's class and on registration through a school. There is no entrance test, no minimum percentage and no stated age limit. A student of any class from 1 to 12 can sit Level 1, as long as the school has registered the student with the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF).
This page explains who can appear for the International English Olympiad in 2026-27, how Level 2 eligibility works, what a school needs to do, and the most common situations that confuse parents. All rules come from the official SOF pages, and anything unclear is marked.

Class Eligibility for Level 1
SOF states that the IEO is open to students of classes 1 to 12. The class the student is studying in during the academic year decides which paper they receive and which syllabus applies.
Class | Levels available | Paper at Level 1 |
|---|---|---|
Classes 1 and 2 | Level 1 only | 35 questions, 40 marks |
Classes 3 and 4 | Level 1 and Level 2 | 35 questions, 40 marks |
Classes 5 to 12 | Level 1 and Level 2 | 50 questions, 60 marks |
Students of classes 1 and 2 are ranked on their Level 1 performance, since they do not take a second level.
School Registration Rules
The IEO is a school-based Olympiad. Students cannot register directly with SOF, and the school's Olympiad in-charge handles the process.
Any school can take part: A school can register as a Level 1 exam centre and pays no fee to SOF to become one.
No minimum number of students: Schools with fewer than 10 interested students can still enrol them.
Forms are filled by the school: The coordinating teacher completes the School Registration Form and the Students' Registration Sheet, and SOF generates roll numbers from the sheet.
The school picks the exam date: One of three Level 1 dates is chosen, and changes are not permitted.
A school that has not received SOF information can send its name, email, address and principal's contact details to SOF to receive the registration forms. The contact details are on the https://sofworld.org/ieo/about-ieo-exam/how-to-participate page.
Eligibility for Level 2
Level 2 is open only to students of classes 3 to 12 who qualify from Level 1. A student needs to meet any one of the three routes below.
Route | Condition |
|---|---|
Class-wise top 5% | The student is in the top 5% of all students of the same class who appeared for Level 1 |
Zone-wise top 25 | The student is among the top 25 rank holders of the class in their zone |
School class topper | The student is the topper of the class in the school, provided at least 10 students of that class appeared and the topper scored at least 50% |
SOF breaks ties for the top 5% route using section marks in a fixed order. For last year's class-wise Level 1 cut-off marks.
Two further points apply. Level 2 may not be held in every state, depending on conditions. If it is not held, Level 1 results are final. Also, students who move up a class before Level 2 still use the syllabus of the class in which they took Level 1.
Age Limit, Marks and Other Conditions
Age: SOF does not state an age limit. A student is eligible by class, so a younger or older student in the right class is not excluded on age alone.
Marks: No minimum marks in the previous class or exam are required for Level 1.
Medium: The Olympiads are conducted in English only.
Multiple Olympiads: A student can take more than one SOF Olympiad in a year if each class eligibility is met, because each Olympiad is a separate competition.
Lower-class papers: According to the SOF FAQ page, a student can retake an Olympiad from a lower class to improve their ranking and become eligible again for certificates and prizes.
The official pages we checked do not state any rule for private candidates or home-schooled students, so such families should ask SOF before planning. The usual route is a school that is willing to register them.

As of late October 2026, the 30-day window for the 17 November date has passed on a normal timeline. A school that is still interested should contact SOF at once, since SOF accepts late details only if they arrive before its registration deadline.
Common Situations and What to Do
Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
The school has never registered for SOF | Ask the principal to request the prospectus from SOF and register the school |
Fewer than 10 students are interested | The school can still enrol them |
The student has moved to a new school | Register through the current school; ceremony dates for earlier winners come through the previous school or the SOF website |
Admit card, roll number or certificate is missing | The principal or in-charge contacts SOF, and a duplicate is sent to the school |
The student wants to improve a rank | The student can retake an Olympiad from a lower class, as per the SOF FAQ |
Who Cannot Appear
Students not registered through a school: Individual registration is not accepted.
Students of classes 1 and 2 at Level 2: These classes have a single level.
