Pharmacy Entrance

Karnataka Common Entrance Test

KCET, short for Karnataka Common Entrance Test, is the state-level entrance examination conducted by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) for admission to professional courses in Karnataka. It is also known as UGCET. The test opens the door to engineering, pharmacy, agriculture and several allied degree programmes, and more than three lakh candidates appeared in the 2026 cycle.

This page explains how the exam works, who can apply, how ranks are made and what the counselling stage looks like. The most recent completed cycle is KCET 2026, held on 23 and 24 April 2026. KEA has not yet announced the 2027 schedule, so 2026 dates are shown here as a reference and clearly labelled. Official website: https://cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea/

Where the KCET 2027 Cycle Stands

As of 27 October 2026, KEA has not published a notification, information bulletin or exam calendar for KCET 2027. Any specific 2027 date you see elsewhere is an estimate.

The pattern of recent years gives a rough guide. For the 2026 cycle, applications opened in the second half of January, the exam followed in the last week of April and the result came in early June. If KEA follows a similar rhythm, the 2027 notification should appear around January 2027. Treat this as an expectation, not a promise, and track the official website and your registered email.

What can be said with confidence is what usually stays stable: the subjects, the 60-question paper per subject and the use of Karnataka PUC-based syllabus. Anything that changes will appear in the new information bulletin, so read that document in full once it is released.

Courses You Can Enter Through KCET

KCET is not one exam for one stream. KEA uses the same test for several course groups, and each group needs a different combination of papers. This is why many students are unsure whether they must write all four subjects. The table below follows the KEA 2026 information bulletin.

Course group

Papers that count

Basis of the rank

Engineering and Technology (B.E. and B.Tech)

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics

CET marks and qualifying exam marks, equal weight

Farm science (B.Sc. Agriculture, Sericulture, Horticulture, Forestry and related)

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology

CET marks and qualifying exam marks, equal weight; agriculturist quota adds a practical test

B.Pharm, lateral entry B.Pharm and Pharm.D

Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Biology

CET marks only, using the higher of the PCM or PCB combination

B.V.Sc. and A.H., B.Sc. Nursing

Physics, Chemistry, Biology

CET marks only

Naturopathy and Yoga

Physics, Chemistry, Biology

CET marks and qualifying exam marks, equal weight

Some courses that sit under the same KEA umbrella do not need the entrance test at all. Architecture admissions use a NATA score, medical, dental and AYUSH seats use NEET-UG, and a few allied health courses are filled on qualifying exam marks after registration. Check the bulletin for the exact route of your course.

Eligibility in Brief

Eligibility depends on the course. In general, a candidate must have studied the required subjects in Class 12 or 2nd PUC and must meet a minimum percentage. A candidate who is still waiting for the 2nd PUC result may apply but must meet the percentage to be admitted.

  • Engineering: 45 per cent aggregate in Physics and Mathematics along with one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Electronics or Computer Science. The minimum is 40 per cent for reserved categories.

  • B.Pharm: 45 per cent in Physics, Chemistry and either Mathematics or Biology, or a Diploma in Pharmacy with 45 per cent. The minimum is 40 per cent for reserved categories.

  • Government seats: These need the Karnataka study or nativity condition, such as seven years of study in Karnataka. Other clauses cover defence families, employees and candidates from outside the state.

The full rules, with every clause, are on the dedicated KCET eligibility criteria page.

Application Fee and How to Apply

The application is online. Based on the 2026 notification, candidates entered their details, selected the courses and exam centres, and paid the fee online. Original documents were checked later at the verification stage rather than at the time of the form.

Rs. 500

SC, ST and Category-1 (Karnataka)

Rs. 250

Candidates who studied outside Karnataka

Rs. 750

Candidates applying from outside India

Rs. 5,000

These are 2026 figures. Confirm the amounts in the 2027 bulletin before paying.

Exam Pattern in Brief

Each subject is a separate paper of 60 multiple-choice questions carrying one mark each, to be solved in 80 minutes. In 2026 the papers were spread over two days, with two sessions a day.

Date

Morning (10:30 to 11:50)

Afternoon (2:30 to 3:50)

23 April 2026

Physics

Chemistry

24 April 2026

Mathematics

Biology

A correct answer earns one mark and a wrong answer carries no penalty, so every question is worth attempting. The detailed rules are explained on the KCET exam pattern page.

Syllabus in Brief

The KCET syllabus follows the 1st and 2nd PUC curriculum of the Department of Pre-University Education, Karnataka, which is aligned to the NCERT approach. Questions can come from both years. KEA published the subject-wise syllabus for the 2026 cycle in late January 2026, and the 2027 version is expected with the next bulletin.

Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are the common core. Biology is needed for pharmacy, agriculture, veterinary, nursing and similar routes. For chapter lists and a study order, see the KCET syllabus guide.

How the KCET Rank Is Calculated

The rank is not always the raw exam score. KEA uses a different formula for different courses.

  • Engineering, farm science and naturopathy: The qualifying exam marks and the CET marks in the relevant subjects carry equal weight, so the 2nd PUC result matters as much as the entrance paper.

  • B.Pharm, Pharm.D, B.V.Sc. and nursing: The rank is based on CET marks alone. For pharmacy, the higher of the two combinations, PCM or PCB, is used.

  • Agriculturist quota: Weightage is split between the 2nd PUC marks, CET marks and a practical test, with a minimum score in the practical test.

Your qualifying exam marks must be uploaded or verified on the KEA portal for the rank list. Check that the marks shown on your scorecard are correct and report any mismatch quickly.

Kannada Test, Reservation and Special Quotas

Three features of the KEA system confuse first-time applicants, so it helps to know them early.

  • Kannada language test: Candidates who claim government-seat benefits as Kannadigas living outside Karnataka (the Horanadu and Gadinadu categories) must also appear in a separate Kannada test. In 2026 it was a 50-mark paper at fourth-standard level, and the minimum qualifying score was 12 marks. It was held on 22 April 2026 at four centres: Bengaluru, Belagavi, Vijayapura and Mangaluru.

  • Reservation: Reserved categories include SC, ST, Category-1, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B, and reservation applies to eligible Karnataka candidates. The 2026 bulletin set an annual family income limit of less than Rs. 8 lakh for the 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B categories. Certificates must carry a valid RD number.

  • Special categories and quotas: These include defence and ex-defence wards, NCC, sports, persons with disabilities and the Kalyana Karnataka region. Engineering colleges also hold a Supernumerary Quota of 5 per cent of seats for eligible candidates, with tuition fee waived but other fees payable.

Each of these claims is backed by specific certificates, so gather caste, income, study and region documents before the verification window opens rather than after.

Counselling and Seat Allotment

Counselling is run online by KEA after the result. The steps stayed broadly the same in 2026:

  1. Verification: Upload or present original documents and download the verification slip.

  2. Option entry: Enter and arrange your preferred colleges and courses in order of priority.

  3. Mock allotment: Check a trial allotment and edit your options if needed.

  4. Real allotment: Seats are given by rank, category and option order.

  5. Choice and reporting: Accept the seat, ask for an upgrade, move to the next round or exit, then pay the fee and report to the college.

In 2026 the process ran across three main rounds between June and early September. Seat surrender rules can carry a penalty in later rounds, so read the surrender conditions before making a choice.

Cut-off Reference

KCET does not have one pass mark for admission. What matters is the closing rank of the college and branch in each round, and that changes every year. The table shows Round 3 general merit closing ranks reported for 2026 for a few well-known colleges. These come from third-party analysis of KEA allotment data and are indicative only.

The KCET cut-off page explains how to read these numbers and set a target.

How to Prepare for KCET

Because the paper is purely objective and has no negative marking, the winning habits are coverage, speed and accuracy. A simple plan works better than a complicated one.

  • Start from the PUC textbooks: The questions are built from the PUC syllabus, so finish both years and use the textbooks as the base before moving to extra material.

  • Give the 2nd PUC exam its due: Since the qualifying marks carry half the weight for engineering, board preparation is part of KCET preparation, not a distraction from it.

  • Practise by subject and time: Each paper gives about 80 seconds per question. Train with sectional tests so that you finish a 60-question paper with time left to review.

  • Solve previous papers: Work through KCET previous year question papers to see the real difficulty level and the chapters that repeat.
