KCET Eligibility 2027: Qualification, Marks and Clauses

KCET eligibility depends on three things: the course you want, the subjects and marks you have in Class 12 or 2nd PUC, and your connection to Karnataka through study or residence. A candidate who meets the first two can usually write the test, but the third decides whether you can claim government seats and reservation. Many applicants find this the most confusing part of the Karnataka Common Entrance Test.

This page explains the KCET eligibility criteria as given in the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) information bulletin for the 2026 cycle. KEA has not yet released the 2027 bulletin, so treat the figures here as the latest available guide and verify them when the new bulletin is published. Check the bulletin

For B.Pharm, the bulletin allows either the Physics, Chemistry and Biology combination or the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics combination. Diploma holders must submit the final-year D.Pharm marks card, with the CET number written on it, to KEA by the date notified in the bulletin.

Rules on Marks, Results and Qualifying Boards

  • Result awaited: Students who are appearing for the 2nd PUC or Class 12 exam can apply. They must meet the required percentage when the result is out, otherwise the seat cannot be taken.

  • Karnataka PUC and other boards: The qualifying exam is Class 12 or 2nd PUC, or an equivalent examination. If you studied under another board or outside the state, check the equivalence rules in the bulletin.

  • Open university route: A qualification obtained through Karnataka State Open University is not accepted.

  • Marks used for the rank: For engineering, farm science and naturopathy, the qualifying marks are part of the rank, so errors in marks entry matter.

  • Subject combination matters: A student with Physics and Mathematics but no Chemistry may still qualify for engineering if the third subject is Biotechnology, Biology, Electronics or Computer Science.

Age Limit

The sections of the KEA 2026 bulletin that we reviewed do not set an upper age limit for KCET. Admission rules of individual courses, universities or regulatory councils can still apply, so check the course page before you pay the fee. When KEA releases the 2027 bulletin, confirm whether any age-related condition has been added.

Nationality

KCET is open to Indian citizens. Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) candidates have been reported to be treated at par with Indian citizens for general category seats only, without the right to claim reservation. KEA also provides a separate application fee for candidates applying from outside India, so check the bulletin for the documents they need.

Karnataka Study and Residence Clauses

This is where most confusion arises. KEA uses lettered clauses to decide who counts as a Karnataka candidate for government seats. The table gives the idea in plain language, based on the 2026 bulletin.

Clause

Who it covers

Clause a

Seven academic years of study in Karnataka government or recognised institutions between 1st standard and 2nd PUC or Class 12, counted as on 1 July of the exam year; SSLC and 2nd PUC must be passed from Karnataka

Clause b

Studied 1st and 2nd PUC (or Class 11 and 12) in Karnataka, and either parent studied for seven years in Karnataka

Clause c

Mother tongue is Kannada, Tulu, Kodava or Beary; a parent is domiciled in Karnataka; candidate lives outside Karnataka; a Kannada test is required

Clause d

Seven years of study in specified Kannada-speaking border taluks of Maharashtra or Kerala; a Kannada test is required

Clauses e to l and o

Children of defence personnel, ex-servicemen, central and state government employees, Members of Parliament, All India Service officers and CAPF personnel, each with specific documents

Clause m

Children of Jammu and Kashmir migrants, supported by a District Magistrate identity card

Clause n

Ten full years of Kannada-medium schooling outside Karnataka

Clause y

Candidates who do not fit the other clauses; the bulletin links this clause to specific courses, so read the conditions carefully

Candidates claiming clause c or d must also score at least 12 out of 50 in the Kannada language test. The test details are on the KCET exam pattern page.

Clause conditions and reference dates are reset every year, for example the date by which the seven years of study are counted. Do not rely on last year's date.

Reservation and Category Rules

  • Categories: Reserved categories are SC, ST, Category-1, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B. Reservation applies to eligible Karnataka candidates.

  • Income limit: For the 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B categories, the 2026 bulletin set the annual family income limit below Rs. 8 lakh.

  • SC sub-classification: SC candidates are classified into Category A, B or C, based on an order dated 25 August 2025 mentioned in the bulletin.

  • Special categories: NCC, sports, defence, ex-defence, CAPF, Scouts and Guides, persons with disabilities and Kalyana Karnataka candidates each have their own conditions and documents.

  • Supernumerary Quota: Eligible candidates with income certificates under the limit can claim a Supernumerary Quota of 5 per cent of engineering seats, with tuition fee waived. It is not available for architecture.

Pharmacy Aspirants: Eligibility Points to Note

Pharmacy has more entry routes than most KCET courses, so it deserves its own checklist.

  • Two subject routes: B.Pharm accepts Physics and Chemistry with either Biology or Mathematics. You do not need both Biology and Mathematics to be eligible.

  • Rank from CET marks alone: For B.Pharm and Pharm.D, the rank is built from CET marks, using the higher of the PCM or PCB combination. The bulletin states that no minimum CET score is required, although the qualifying exam percentage still applies.

  • Diploma holders: A Diploma in Pharmacy with the required marks opens the lateral entry route into the second year of B.Pharm, and the final-year marks card must reach KEA by the notified date.

  • D.Pharm admission: D.Pharm is filled without an entrance test, but you still need to register and pay the fee with KEA.

Pharmacy aspirants who are unsure which combination will score higher can practise both papers and compare. KCET online tests on Testkart in Mathematics and Biology can help you see which paper gives you the better and more stable score before you decide what to write.

Documents to Keep Ready

The online form does not replace verification. Original documents are checked at a verification stage notified by KEA, and the timing has differed between cycles, so keep these ready early.

Document

Why it is needed

SSLC and 2nd PUC or Class 12 marks cards

Proof of qualification and marks

Study certificate countersigned by BEO or DDPU

Proof of the years studied in Karnataka

Rural study certificate and NCLC with RD number

For rural quota claims where applicable

Caste or caste-income certificate in the prescribed form with RD number

For SC, ST, Category-1, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B claims

Income certificate

For fee exemption and Supernumerary Quota

Kannada-medium study certificate

For clause n and similar claims

Kalyana Karnataka Annexure

For region-based reservation

Make sure your name and date of birth match across your SSLC marks card, Aadhaar and caste or income certificates. A mismatch is a common reason for rejected claims.

Courses That Use Other Entrance Tests

  • Architecture: Admission requires a valid NATA score and compliance with Council of Architecture norms.

  • Medical, dental and AYUSH: These use NEET-UG. KEA runs the counselling but the entrance score comes from NEET-UG.

  • BPT, B.Sc. Allied Health Sciences, BPO and D.Pharm: No entrance test is held, but registration and fee payment with KEA are still required.

Who May Not Be Eligible

  • Candidates whose qualifying exam is below the minimum percentage for the chosen course.

  • Candidates with a qualification from Karnataka State Open University.

  • Candidates who lack the required subjects, such as a science student without Physics and Mathematics applying for engineering.

  • Candidates who cannot produce the documents for the clause or category they claim; they may lose the benefit even if they can take the test.

  • Candidates who give wrong or mismatched details in the form, which can lead to cancellation of the claim.

After Eligibility: Where to Start Preparing

Once you know which papers your course needs, preparation can start in a focused way. The KCET syllabus lists the 1st and 2nd PUC chapters for each subject. A timed test early in your preparation shows your starting level, and you can attempt KCET online tests on Testkart in the same 60-question, 80-minute format to find weak chapters. Keep short notes and a record of mistakes as you go, and add them to the KCET study notes you use for revision.

Application Fee and Eligibility Checks

The KCET 2026 application fee was Rs. 500 for general merit, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B candidates from Karnataka, Rs. 250 for SC, ST and Category-1 candidates, Rs. 750 for candidates who studied outside Karnataka and Rs. 5,000 for candidates applying from outside India. Confirm the 2027 amounts before paying.

Before you apply, run a quick check: confirm the course and the subjects it needs, compare your marks with the minimum, identify your clause, and list the certificates you will need.
