KCET Exam Pattern 2027: Marks, Papers and Timing

The KCET exam pattern is simple on paper and easy to misread in practice. The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) conducts four separate subject papers, each with 60 objective questions to be answered in 80 minutes, and the papers a candidate writes depend on the course. The test is held offline on an OMR sheet, and the 2026 cycle had no negative marking.

This page explains the KCET exam pattern as followed in the latest completed cycle, KCET 2026 (held on 23 and 24 April 2026), and what it means for your preparation. KEA has not yet announced the 2027 pattern or dates, and no change has been notified so far. Confirm every detail in the new information bulletin on the official website: https://cetonline.karnataka.gov.in/kea/

How Many Papers Will You Write

KEA uses one common test for many courses, so the number of papers changes with your choice. According to the 2026 information bulletin, the combinations are as follows.

Course group

Papers that count

Total marks in CET

Engineering and Technology

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics

180

B.Pharm, lateral entry B.Pharm, Pharm.D

Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Biology

180 (higher of the PCM or PCB score is used)

B.V.Sc. and A.H., B.Sc. Nursing, Naturopathy and Yoga

Physics, Chemistry, Biology

180

Farm science (B.Sc. Agriculture and related)

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology

240

A pharmacy aspirant who is unsure between the two routes can write all four papers, because KEA picks the better combination. An engineering-only aspirant does not need Biology for the rank.

KCET 2026 Exam Schedule and Timings

The 2026 schedule placed one subject in each session. The same arrangement is a useful guide for planning, but the 2027 timetable will be published by KEA.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

The marking scheme is one of the friendliest among state entrance tests.

  • Correct answer: One mark is awarded for each correct option.

  • Wrong answer: No marks are deducted. KCET 2026 had no negative marking.

  • Unattempted question: No marks are awarded and nothing is deducted.

  • More than one option marked: As reported for 2026, the question earns no marks, so mark exactly one option.

Because wrong answers do not cost anything, leaving a question blank can only reduce your score.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • Attempt every question: With no penalty, a blind guess has a positive expected value. Use elimination first, then guess.

  • Plan about 80 seconds a question: Eighty minutes for 60 questions is a tight average, and Mathematics usually feels the tightest. Solve the quick questions first and come back to the long ones.

  • Each paper is separate: You cannot move spare time from an easy paper to a hard one. Practise finishing each paper inside its own 80 minutes.

  • Each mark is worth the same: A one-line fact in Biology earns as much as a long numerical in Physics. Collect the easy marks first.

  • Use the last minutes well: Spend the final five to ten minutes filling in unattempted questions rather than re-checking answers you are already sure about.

OMR Sheet and Language of the Paper

Answers are marked by shading bubbles on an OMR sheet that is given at the exam centre. As reported for the 2026 cycle, an answer that has been shaded cannot be changed, so decide before you shade. Follow the instructions printed on the sheet and on the admit card.

The question papers were reported to be available in English and Kannada. Check the language options on your admit card and in the bulletin, and practise reading questions in the language you plan to use.

Kannada Language Test Pattern

This test is separate from the four subject papers. It is only for candidates who claim government-seat benefits as Kannadigas living outside Karnataka under the Horanadu and Gadinadu categories.

Candidates under some other clauses, such as ten years of Kannada-medium study outside Karnataka, may not need the test. Read the clause that applies to you in the bulletin.

Practical Test for the Agriculturist Quota

Candidates who apply under the agriculturist quota for farm science or veterinary courses also take a practical test. In the 2026 bulletin, the merit for farm science under this quota was split as 25 per cent for 2nd PUC marks, 25 per cent for CET marks and 50 per cent for the practical test, with a minimum of 50 per cent needed in the practical test. For B.V.Sc. and A.H., the split was 50 per cent CET and 50 per cent practical. The test fee was Rs. 500 for general and OBC candidates and Rs. 250 for SC, ST and Category-1 candidates, paid by demand draft at the test centre. Check the current bulletin before you apply.

From Marks to Rank

The pattern decides the marks, and the course decides how those marks become a rank. For engineering, farm science and naturopathy, the qualifying exam marks and CET marks carry equal weight. For B.Pharm, Pharm.D, B.V.Sc. and nursing, the rank depends on CET marks alone.

Here is a simplified illustration of equal weight for an engineering aspirant. It is only an example of the idea and not KEA's published formula text, which you should read in the bulletin.

Component

Marks obtained

Out of

Share of the final score

CET (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics)

135

180

75 per cent scored, counted for 50 per cent of the total

2nd PUC (same three subjects)

240

300

80 per cent scored, counted for 50 per cent of the total

In this illustration the combined score would be 77.5 out of 100. A candidate who scores well in the boards but poorly in KCET, or the other way round, gets pulled back to the middle, which is why both exams deserve attention.

Time Management and Exam-day Strategy

  1. Scan before you solve: Spend the first two minutes seeing which chapters appear and mark questions you can answer instantly.

  2. Work in rounds: In round one, solve the questions that take under a minute. In round two, take the medium ones. Leave the longest calculations for the end.

  3. Guard the OMR sheet: Shade each answer right after you decide it, or in small batches, and match the question number carefully.

  4. Do not carry the last paper into the next one: There are two papers a day, so reset your mind during the break and avoid discussing answers.

  5. Rehearse the format: Timed practice in the same 60-question, 80-minute format makes the real paper feel familiar. You can attempt KCET online tests on Testkart for subject-wise timed practice and review your time per question afterward.

A simple time plan for each 80-minute paper looks like this. Adjust it after your first few timed tests.

Stage

Time

What to do

First pass

About 40 minutes

Solve every question you can finish in under a minute and shade the answers

Second pass

About 25 minutes

Return to medium-length questions and attempt the formula-based ones

Third pass

About 10 minutes

Attempt the longest questions or make informed guesses

OMR check

About 5 minutes

Confirm that no question is left unshaded and that each row matches its question number

Pair timed practice with KCET previous year question papers to see the difficulty and the question style, and keep an error log of every question you got wrong or guessed.

Difficulty Level Reported for KCET 2026

KEA does not publish a difficulty rating, so the table below reflects student feedback and expert review compiled by a third-party education site after the exam. It is useful for planning your time, but it is an opinion, not an official statement.

Subject

Reported difficulty (KCET 2026)

What students noticed

Physics

Moderate

Balanced paper, mostly textbook-based, with a few tricky numericals

Chemistry

Moderate

Balanced paper, textbook-based, as per student feedback

Mathematics

Moderate to difficult

Lengthy and time-consuming, so speed mattered

Biology

Not rated in the source

No reliable analysis was available

The takeaway is practical. Mathematics tends to decide how many candidates finish the paper, so build speed in calculus, algebra and coordinate geometry well before the exam.

Answer Key, Objections and Result

The pattern does not end when the papers end. After the exam, KEA released a provisional answer key, and candidates could check their responses and raise objections within the notified window before the final key was published. The result for KCET 2026 was declared on 6 June 2026, and the scorecard showed subject-wise CET marks, the qualifying exam marks and the rank.

Because the result depends on the qualifying exam marks for several courses, make sure your 2nd PUC details are correct on the KEA portal. A mismatch can delay the rank. The exact dates for the next cycle will be announced in the KEA notice, so do not rely on estimates from unofficial pages.

Pattern Details That Older Pages Get Wrong

Many pages mix up details from different years or courses, so check these points against the official bulletin before relying on them.

  • Online mode: KCET is not a computer-based test. It is a pen-and-paper exam with an OMR sheet.

  • Four-hour paper: There is no single long paper. Each subject is a separate 80-minute paper.

  • Single optional subject: Some pages say Chemistry or Biology is optional. The papers that count depend on the course group, as in the table above.

  • Negative marking: Wrong answers were not penalised in 2026. If the 2027 bulletin changes this, the new rule applies.

  • Result and counselling dates: Dates from earlier years or from unconfirmed schedules are often shown as current. Use the KEA notification.
