Engineering Entrance

KEAM

KEAM is an entrance examination taken by students preparing for undergraduate engineering admissions.

KEAM (Kerala Engineering Architecture Medical) is the entrance route to professional degree courses in Kerala, run by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala. For engineering and pharmacy, CEE conducts its own computer-based entrance test. Architecture uses NATA scores, and medical and allied courses use NEET UG scores. All of these go through one CEE application and a centralised allotment process.

This page is written mainly for engineering, architecture and pharmacy aspirants. It uses KEAM 2026, the latest completed cycle, as the reference point. When this page was prepared in late October 2026, the KEAM 2027 notification had not been released, so every 2027 date you see elsewhere is an expectation, not an announcement. The sections below keep cycle-specific facts apart from rules that stay the same year after year.

The rank list was originally planned for an earlier date and was moved to 27 June after students asked for more time to add Plus Two marks, following CBSE re-evaluation results. That is a good reminder that dates can shift.

Dates can change, so treat any schedule as tentative until CEE confirms it. Track the notification section on the official KEAM portal and your registered email and mobile number.

KEAM 2027 status: not announced yet. Expect the notification and application window early in 2027, but wait for CEE to confirm. Rules for age, qualifying marks and the exam pattern can be revised in the new prospectus, so read it fully when it is released.

Courses covered through KEAM

The prospectus lists courses in engineering, architecture, pharmacy, medicine and allied sciences, agriculture, forestry, veterinary, fisheries and a few others. The three streams most students compare are shown below.

Eligibility in brief

These are the headline rules for engineering. Architecture and pharmacy have their own subject and mark conditions, explained on the KEAM eligibility criteria page.

  • Qualification: Higher Secondary (Plus Two) from Kerala or an equivalent examination, with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Chemistry is normally studied too; if it was not, the prospectus counts Computer Science, then Biotechnology, then Biology.

  • Marks: at least 45% in the qualifying subjects put together, as in the recent prospectuses.

  • Age: minimum 17 years by 31 December of the admission year, with no upper age limit, as reported for the 2026 cycle.

  • Nationality: Indian citizens. OCI and PIO candidates can apply but cannot claim reservation.

Candidates are also placed in a nativity category (Keralite, Non-Keralite Category I or Category II), which affects the seats they can compete for.

Application process and fee

Applications and documents are accepted online only. According to the prospectus, the process has five stages.

  1. Register with a valid email ID and mobile number.

  2. Enter personal, academic and category details.

  3. Pay the application fee online.

  4. Upload the required documents, such as the SSLC or equivalent certificate for date of birth, nativity proof and category certificates.

  5. Download the acknowledgement page and keep it safe.

Special reservation claims must be made in the application itself and cannot be added later. Defects in your application are shown on the candidate portal and sent by email, SMS or the Sandes app, so check all three channels regularly.

Mathematics carries half of the engineering paper, so it decides more than any other subject. The full breakdown, with a time plan, is on the KEAM exam pattern page.

Syllabus in brief

The paper is built on the Class 11 and Class 12 content of the Higher Secondary course. The official syllabus is given as an annexure in the prospectus, so always check it when the new edition arrives.

Subject

Main areas

Mathematics

Algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry and vectors, calculus, statistics and probability

Physics

Mechanics, properties of matter and thermodynamics, oscillations and waves, electricity and magnetism, optics, modern physics, electronics

Chemistry

Physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry including coordination compounds, organic chemistry and biomolecules

Chapter-wise lists and starting points are on the KEAM syllabus page.

How the engineering rank list is prepared

This is the part many first-time candidates miss. The KEAM engineering rank is not decided by the entrance test alone. The prospectus gives equal weightage to two components, producing an index mark out of 600.

  • Entrance score (300): your KEAM marks, normalised so that candidates who wrote on different days and sessions are compared fairly.

  • Plus Two score (300): marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry combined in a 5:3:2 ratio, which works out to 150, 90 and 60 marks respectively. Board marks are normalised so that different boards can be compared.

The prospectus cites a Kerala government order dated 26 December 2025 for this method. The Kerala High Court later dismissed petitions challenging the revised formula, as reported. The exact normalisation steps are in the prospectus, so read that clause rather than relying on a third-party calculator.

B.Pharm is simpler: the rank is based on the pharmacy entrance marks. Architecture combines NATA and qualifying marks equally.

What this means for you: a strong board result lifts your rank as much as a strong KEAM score does. Do not treat Plus Two as secondary. Spend your last months balancing board exam revision with entrance practice, not choosing one over the other.

Counselling and seat allotment

After the rank list, CEE runs centralised allotment. For engineering in 2026, the official allotment page listed a trial allotment followed by Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3.

  • Option registration: you list your preferred colleges and courses in order of priority. This order decides which seat you get.

  • Option confirmation: mandatory in every allotment phase according to the prospectus. Missing it can cost you the allotment.

  • Fee payment and joining: allotted candidates must complete the steps within the dates set for each phase.

  • Last rank lists: CEE publishes the last rank admitted in each phase, which is the real cut-off data. See the KEAM cut-off page for how to read it.

Reservation in brief

For government and aided seats, the prospectus sets these mandatory reservations: State Merit 50%, EWS 10%, SEBC 30% (split among listed communities), and SC and ST together 10% (SC 8%, ST 2%). Persons with benchmark disabilities have 5% of seats in government, aided and government cost-sharing engineering colleges. Several special categories, such as ex-servicemen and children of defence personnel, apply only to Keralite candidates and must be claimed in the application.

How to prepare for KEAM

KEAM rewards accuracy and speed in Mathematics, along with solid fundamentals in Physics and Chemistry. A sensible plan looks like this.

  1. Start with the Higher Secondary textbooks. Cover Class 11 and Class 12 chapters in full, because questions come straight from them.

  2. Give Mathematics the most hours. It is 300 of 600 marks. Practise calculus, algebra and coordinate geometry daily, with a timer.

  3. Use chapter-wise tests early. Short tests after each chapter show weak topics before they pile up.

  4. Move to full-length mocks in the last two to three months. Attempt them in the same 180-minute format and at the same time of day as the real exam.

  5. Analyse every test. Sort errors into concept gaps, calculation slips and time pressure, and revise from that error log.

With +4 for a correct answer and -1 for a wrong one, a guess with no idea at all is not worth taking. An informed elimination, where you can rule out an option or two, is a calculated risk you can practise in mocks.
