KEAM Exam Pattern 2027: Marks, Papers and Marking Scheme

The KEAM exam pattern for engineering is a single computer-based test of 150 questions and 600 marks, to be finished in 180 minutes. B.Pharm candidates write a shorter paper with Physics and Chemistry only. These figures come from the KEAM 2026 cycle, the latest completed one, and the KEAM 2027 prospectus may revise them.

This page explains the pattern in detail, then turns the numbers into a practical plan for marks, time and risk. It also covers how the entrance score joins your Plus Two marks to form the engineering rank, because the pattern only makes sense in that context.

The engineering timings and test dates were confirmed in the official answer-key listing and prospectus for 2026. The B.Pharm duration and morning timing come from published reports of the exam notice, so check the admit card for your own slot.

Engineering exam pattern

All three subjects are in one paper and one sitting. You can move between subjects freely within the 180 minutes, which means your order of attempt is part of your strategy.

B.Pharm exam pattern

The B.Pharm paper has 45 Physics and 30 Chemistry questions, worth 4 marks each, for a total of 300 marks. There is no Mathematics or Biology section in the 2026 pattern. The same marking scheme applies as in engineering. The pharmacy rank is prepared from entrance marks alone, so every mark counts directly towards your position.

Candidates who apply for both engineering and pharmacy appear for the sessions listed on their admit card, so read the timing for each carefully.

Unattempted questions are not penalised. A wrong answer takes away a quarter of what a right answer earns, so a careless wrong answer costs 5 marks compared with a correct one.

What the pattern means for you

  • Mathematics decides the rank. Half of the marks sit in one subject. A candidate who scores well in Maths but average in Chemistry usually beats one who does the opposite.

  • Time per question is tight. 180 minutes for 150 questions gives an average of 1.2 minutes per question. Maths questions are often longer, so Chemistry and Physics theory questions must be fast.

  • The break-even point for guessing is 20%. Because a right answer earns four times the penalty of a wrong one, an attempt pays off on average only if you have at least a one-in-five chance of being right. Blind guesses do not meet that bar. Guesses after eliminating options often do.

  • A minimum entrance score applies. The prospectus sets a qualifying minimum for inclusion in the rank list, which can differ by category. Check the exact figure there, and treat a very weak section as a risk to your overall score.

Exam day schedule

The prospectus gave this reporting schedule for the engineering test in 2026. Your admit card is the final authority for your centre and slot.

Multiple sessions and score normalisation

The engineering test ran over several days in 2026, from 17 to 22 April. Different candidates wrote different question sets, so raw marks cannot be compared directly, since one session may be tougher than another. CEE therefore normalises the entrance scores, and the normalised scores were released on the candidate portal before the rank list.

For you, this means two things. First, do not worry about whether your day looked easy or hard, because the scores are adjusted. Second, a score that looks low in raw terms can still be competitive if your session was tough. Wait for the official score before judging your result.

From entrance score to engineering rank

For engineering, the entrance test does not decide the rank alone. The prospectus gives equal weightage to the normalised entrance score and your Plus Two marks, which produces an index mark out of 600.

Used to prepare the rank list

Board marks are normalised so that different boards can be compared. As widely reported, each subject mark is compared with the highest mark scored in that subject under your board, and then scaled to the weightage above. The exact method is in the prospectus, so rely on that, not on a calculator.

Here is an illustrative example using the reported method, with made-up numbers. Suppose the top Maths mark in your board is 100 and you scored 95, giving 95 / 100 x 150 = 142.5. In Physics, the board top is 98 and you scored 88, giving about 80.8 out of 90. In Chemistry, the board top is 100 and you scored 90, giving 54 out of 60. Your Plus Two component is about 277.3. If your normalised entrance score is 240, your index mark is about 517.3.

Ties in the index mark are broken by rules in the prospectus. Coaching sources report the order as entrance Mathematics, then Plus Two Mathematics, then age, but confirm this in the official clause.

Architecture and medical streams

There is no KEAM entrance paper for these streams. Architecture admission uses NATA scores and qualifying exam marks with equal weightage. Medical and allied courses use NEET UG scores. In both cases you still register with CEE and take part in its allotment process. Details of the architecture schedule are on the official portal.

Key changes to know

  • Computer-based format: the 2026 engineering and pharmacy tests were held as computer-based tests at centres in Kerala and in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru, as well as in Gulf countries.

  • One paper for engineering: all three subjects sit in one 150-question paper, instead of the separate papers some older articles describe.

  • Rank formula: the Plus Two component uses a 5:3:2 ratio of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, under the government order cited in the 2026 prospectus.

If KEAM 2027 changes any of these, the new prospectus will say so. Until then, plan with the 2026 pattern, which is the safest working assumption.

Accuracy versus attempts

Many students try to attempt every question. The numbers below show why that can backfire under negative marking. These are illustrative scenarios for a 150-question paper, not predictions.

The first two rows show that attempting 30 more questions at poor accuracy actually reduces the score. The third row shows the goal: attempt widely but keep accuracy above about 80%. Your mock tests are the place to find your own balance.

Difficulty level in 2026

Paper reviews by coaching institutes and education sites described KEAM 2026 as moderate overall, with Chemistry the easiest, Physics moderate and Mathematics moderate to tough because of long calculations. Difficulty varied from day to day, and the reviews are unofficial. Use them to set expectations, not as a prediction for the next paper.

Computer-based test habits

  • Use the on-screen mock: the 1:45 PM interface session in the hall is your chance to learn the palette and navigation before the clock starts.

  • Work with rough sheets: copy the question number, working and final answer neatly, so that a review pass is quick.

  • Mark and move on: do not spend more than about two minutes on any one Mathematics question in the first pass.

  • Check the clock regularly: note your time at the end of each subject block, and compare it with your plan.

Answer key and objections

CEE publishes the answer key for each day and shift on its portal. In 2026, separate engineering and pharmacy keys were listed by date at https://cee.kerala.gov.in/keam2026/anskey.

A provisional key was followed by a window to raise objections through the candidate login, which was reported to carry a fee of Rs. 200 per question. Confirm the fee and deadline in the notification each year. Raise an objection only when you can back it with a textbook reference.

Time management plan

This is a suggested split for the 180 minutes, not an official rule. Adjust it after your first few mocks.

Block

Suggested time

Approach

Chemistry (30 questions)

About 30 minutes

Start here, since many questions are quick recall

Physics (45 questions)

About 50 minutes

Solve concept questions first, leave long numericals for the second pass

Mathematics (75 questions)

About 85 minutes

Attempt easier questions first and mark lengthy ones for review

Review

About 15 minutes

Revisit marked questions and check risky guesses

Older pages and where to verify

Older pages may still show a two-paper format, each with 120 questions, taken on paper. Those descriptions belong to earlier cycles. Follow the current prospectus and notification, which are available at https://cee.kerala.gov.in/keam2026/.
