Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan Assistant Section Officer

KVS Assistant Section Officer is a recruitment exam conducted by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan for officer-cadre recruitment, relevant to candidates preparing for recruitment at public sector undertakings and central institutions.

The KVS Assistant Section Officer (ASO) exam is the direct recruitment route to a Group B level administrative job in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, and its latest round came through the combined KVS and NVS Recruitment Notification 01/2025. This guide covers what that drive means for an aspirant: the revised vacancy count, eligibility (including the experience condition many candidates miss), fees, the two-tier exam pattern, the service-rules syllabus, salary, selection steps, cut-off data and a practical preparation plan.

All figures come from the official notification, corrigenda and CBSE public notices. Where something has not been officially announced, we say so clearly.

What is KVS Assistant Section Officer?

KVS Assistant Section Officer is a non-teaching administrative post in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, the autonomous body under the Ministry of Education that runs Kendriya Vidyalayas across India. Recruitment is held at the national level for KVS, and the post sits at Level 6 of the Pay Matrix. In the latest drive, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the exam on behalf of KVS, and all 85 ASO vacancies were in KVS; Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti did not list any ASO posts.

The exam does not follow a fixed yearly calendar. Direct recruitment for ASO appeared in the December 2022 KVS notification and then in the 2025 combined drive. It is also not an entry-level exam: applicants need a bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of regular service as UDC, SSA or an equivalent Level 4 post, so most candidates are serving central government or autonomous body staff. Selection has two stages, a Tier 1 screening test and a Tier 2 subject knowledge test, with merit based on Tier 2 marks alone and no interview.

Latest Recruitment Status

KVS last ran a standalone direct recruitment that included Assistant Section Officer posts in its December 2022 notification. The next direct recruitment came through the combined KVS and NVS drive. CBSE released the detailed notification on 13 November 2025 for teaching and non-teaching posts in both organisations, and handled applications, both tiers of the exam and results.

For ASO, the drive has moved through every exam stage. Tier 1 was held on 10 and 11 January 2026, the Tier 1 result came on 28 February 2026, Tier 2 for ASO was held on 29 March 2026, and CBSE declared the ASO Tier 2 result on 28 August 2026. Since ASO has no interview, Tier 2 marks were made available in candidate logins along with the result. As of 28 October 2026, no newer direct recruitment notification for KVS ASO has been released.

KVS also fills some ASO posts through promotion and limited departmental examinations open only to serving KVS staff. Those panels are internal and are separate from the open recruitment covered on this page.

Tier 2 lasts 2.5 hours, is held in pen-and-paper and OMR mode, and is bilingual (Hindi and English). Objective questions carry 1 mark each with a 0.25-mark deduction for a wrong answer.

What this means for you:

  • Tier 1 is a filter, not the finish line: Aim to clear it comfortably, but put most of your long-term effort into Tier 2, which alone decides merit.

  • Guessing is costly in Tier 1: One wrong answer wipes out a third of a correct one, so attempt only when you can eliminate options.

  • The descriptive part is decisive: Ten questions worth 40 marks reward clear, rule-based answers, so practise writing.

Older pages may still show the 2022 cycle's pattern, so follow the 2025 notification. Full details are on our KVS ASO exam pattern page.

The two posts form a ladder: regular service as SSA at Level 4 is one of the ways to meet the ASO experience condition. If you do not yet have that service, the KVS SSA exam guide is the more relevant starting point. Both sets of conditions are in the detailed notification: https://www.cbse.gov.in/cbsenew/documents/Detailed_Notification_KVS_NVS_2025_13112025.pdf

How to Prepare for the KVS ASO Exam

Most ASO candidates are already working as UDC or SSA, so preparation has to fit around office hours. The upside is that much of the Tier 2 syllabus overlaps with rules you handle at work.

Tier 1 preparation

  • Revise school-level maths: Percentages, ratio, averages and time and work cover most numeric ability questions.

  • Practise reasoning daily: Short timed sets of 15 to 20 questions build speed.

  • Do not ignore language parts: The 20 language questions carry 60 marks, the same as a full section.

Tier 2 preparation

  • Read the bare rules: Use the current CCS rules, FR and SR, and GFR 2017 rather than old summaries.

  • Make a rule-wise note bank: Record limits, time periods and authorities for leave, LTC, TA and advances.

  • Write weekly: Draft notes, office memoranda and short answers to build the descriptive section.

Mock tests and practice

CBSE did not publish an official mock test for this recruitment, so self-practice in the exam format matters. For timed practice, you can attempt online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to spot weak areas. Pair them with previous year question papers to understand the real difficulty level.

Cut-Off and Competition Level

CBSE has not published category-wise cut-off marks for KVS ASO in the 2025 drive. The table shows the status of each cut-off point.

Roughly one in three Tier 1 candidates reached Tier 2, and about ten Tier 2 candidates competed for each post. Since final merit depends only on Tier 2, aim for a clear margin there rather than a bare pass. Our KVS ASO cut-off page explains how to set a realistic target.
