KVS ASO Syllabus 2026: Tier 1 and Tier 2 Topics

The KVS ASO syllabus covers two very different papers. Tier 1 is a general aptitude screening test, while Tier 2 is a subject knowledge paper built almost entirely around central government service rules, pay, finance and office procedure. Both were set by CBSE for the Assistant Section Officer post in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan under the combined KVS and NVS Recruitment Notification 01/2025.

This page lays out the official Tier 2 topic list, a practical topic breakdown for Tier 1, the areas where the two tiers overlap and a phased plan to finish the syllabus. The official syllabus document names only the sections for Tier 1, so the Tier 1 topic lists below are built from those section names, the graduation-level standard stated in the notification and the usual scope of such papers. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list.

Key Points to Know Before You Start

  • Tier 2 decides merit: The final merit list is prepared on Tier 2 marks alone, so the service-rules syllabus deserves most of your time.

  • Tier 1 is common screening: The same Tier 1 structure was used for many posts in the 2025 drive, and it is set at graduation level.

  • No interview, no skill test: Unlike some KVS posts, ASO has no interview or typing test, so there is no separate syllabus for those stages.

  • Rules change: The syllabus names Pension Rules 2021 and GFR 2017. Older study material may still cover the earlier versions, so check dates on any guide you use.

  • Tax and allowances move every year: Income tax slabs, DA rates and some allowance limits change often. Study the version in force close to your exam.

Tier 1 Syllabus

Tier 1 has six parts and 100 questions. The table below gives a working topic list and a sensible place to begin each section.

Section

Topics to cover

Start with

General Reasoning

Analogy, classification, series (number and letter), coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, syllogism, seating arrangement, statement and conclusion, non-verbal patterns

Series and coding-decoding

Numeric Ability

Number system, simplification, percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, data interpretation

Percentages and ratio

Basic Computer Literacy

Computer fundamentals, input and output devices, memory, operating systems, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, internet and email, networking basics, cyber security, keyboard shortcuts, e-governance tools

MS Office and shortcuts

General Knowledge

Current affairs of the last 12 months, Indian polity, history, geography, economy, science basics, government schemes, education policy, awards and important days

Current affairs and polity

Language Competency (English)

Grammar, error spotting, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, idioms, sentence improvement, reading comprehension

Grammar rules and vocabulary

Language Competency (second language)

Grammar, vocabulary and comprehension in the Indian language chosen at the time of application

Comprehension passages

Numeric ability and reasoning reward daily practice more than reading. General knowledge is the hardest section to predict, so give it a fixed 30 minutes a day rather than a last-minute push. The language parts look small, but together they carry 60 marks, the same as any full section.

Tier 2 Topics Explained by Area

  • Official language policy: Official Languages Act, rules, regions A, B and C, and compliance in offices.

Descriptive Section: What to Expect

The descriptive part has 10 questions worth 40 marks, so each question is worth about 4 marks. The official syllabus does not say which topics the descriptive questions will come from. Since the syllabus includes noting and drafting, practise both short explanatory answers on rules and formal drafts.

Type of practice

What to prepare

Rule-based short answers

Explain a rule, its conditions and its limits in a few clear points

Case-style questions

Apply leave, TA, pay fixation or conduct rules to a given situation

Drafting

Office memorandum, note for approval, reply to a letter, circular

Write within the space given, quote the rule or provision where you can, and keep the structure clean. Examiners reward accuracy over length.

Overlap Between Tier 1 and Tier 2

The two tiers share little direct content, but a few areas help in both.

Area

Tier 2

How to plan

Government schemes and policy

GK questions

Official language policy, NPS, GeM

Read official explanations once and note them for both

Computer and e-office

What to Read for Each Tier 2 Area

Tier 2 questions test the rules themselves, so the closer you study to the source, the fewer surprises you face. The table below maps each area to the kind of material that suits it most.

Tier 2 area

What to read

Focus while reading

CCS (CCA) and Conduct Rules

Bare rules with latest amendments

Penalties, authorities, time limits, permissions required

Leave, TA, LTC

CCS (Leave) Rules, TA rules, LTC rules and recent orders

Maximum limits, entitlements by pay level, conditions for encashment

FR and SR, pay fixation, MACP

FR and SR compilation and MACP scheme orders

Definitions, fixation steps, worked examples

Pension, NPS, GPF

CCS (Pension) Rules 2021, NPS rules, GPF rules

Qualifying service, family pension, withdrawals and advances

Income tax and GST

Current-year salary income provisions and TDS circular

Deductions, regimes, employer's TDS duties

GFR 2017 and GeM

GFR 2017 procurement chapter and GeM guidelines

Purchase thresholds, modes of procurement, committees

Office procedure and Rajbhasha

Central Secretariat Manual of Office Procedure and Official Language rules

Formats of notes and letters, region-wise language rules

If you already work as a UDC or SSA, use the files you handle at work as live examples. A pay fixation case or an LTC claim you processed is easier to remember than a paragraph in a guide.

Common Syllabus Mistakes to Avoid

  • Studying only Tier 1: Many candidates spend months on aptitude and then rush the rules. Tier 1 only screens; Tier 2 decides selection.

  • Using outdated rules: Old guides may still teach the earlier pension rules or old GFR limits. Check the year of every source.

  • Skipping the descriptive part: Reading rules is not the same as writing about them. Without practice, answers run long and miss key points.

  • Ignoring the second language: The Indian language part of Tier 1 carries 30 marks and is often the easiest place to gain.

How to Cover the KVS ASO Syllabus

A 16-week plan works well for working candidates who can give 2 to 3 hours on weekdays and more on weekends.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: Tier 1 basics in maths and reasoning, plus 30 minutes of current affairs daily. Start reading FR and SR and leave rules on weekends.

  2. Weeks 5 to 8: Topic tests in Tier 1 sections. In Tier 2, cover CCS (CCA), Conduct, pay fixation and MACP, and build a rule-wise note bank.

  3. Weeks 9 to 12: Full-length Tier 1 mocks twice a week. In Tier 2, finish pension, NPS, GPF, TA, LTC, CGHS and quarters.

  4. Weeks 13 to 16: Income tax, GST, audit, GFR and GeM, official language policy. Write two descriptive answers and one draft every day, and revise from your error log.

Topic-wise practice is where most candidates gain marks. You can attempt topic-wise and full-length online tests on Testkart to check how well each area has stuck, and use the analysis to decide what to revise next. Concise KVS ASO study notes on rules and limits also make the last month of revision faster. When you are ready for timed papers, move to KVS ASO mock tests on Testkart.
