KVS PRT Eligibility 2025-26: Age, Qualification and CTET
KVS PRT eligibility depends on three things: the post you apply for, your educational qualification and your age on the closing date. In the 2025-26 recruitment (Notification 01/2025, issued by CBSE for Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan), three posts sat at the primary level: PRT, PRT (Music) and Special Educator (PRT). Each has its own qualification rules, and PRT and Special Educator also need a CTET pass.
This page explains each condition in plain language, with a relaxation table and a checklist of documents. The rules shown are from the 2025-26 notification. Eligibility conditions can change in a new cycle, so treat this page as a guide and read the clause for your post in the notification when it is released.

Educational qualification
PRT (Primary Teacher)
A candidate for PRT needs Senior Secondary (Class XII) with at least 50% marks, plus one of the following:
2-year Diploma in Elementary Education: Commonly known as D.El.Ed.
4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education: The B.El.Ed. degree.
2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education): Awarded by an institution recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).
You also need a pass in CTET Paper I and the ability to teach through both Hindi and English medium. Knowledge of computer applications is desirable but not compulsory. Candidates with a D.Ed. in Special Education must complete a 6-month special programme in elementary education, recognised by NCTE, after appointment.
Some websites list a B.Ed. as a route to PRT. Go by the qualification clause of the notification and not by a summary, because eligibility is decided on the exact wording.
PRT (Music)
This post needs Class XII with at least 50% marks from a recognised board, and a Bachelor's degree in Music or Performing Arts in which music was a main subject in all years. A Diploma in Music does not qualify. A working knowledge of Hindi and English is required, and computer knowledge is desirable. CTET is not part of the requirement for this post.
Special Educator (PRT)
Candidates need Class XII with at least 50% marks in aggregate and a recognised special education qualification. The notification lists examples such as the 2-year D.Ed. in Special Education, the 1-year Diploma in Special Education, a diploma in community-based rehabilitation with a 6-month certificate, a junior diploma in teaching the deaf and a primary teacher training in visual impairment. It also accepts other RCI-approved equivalents. You must hold a valid registration with RCI (a CRR number), a CTET Paper I pass and the ability to teach in Hindi and English.
CTET requirement
CTET stands for Central Teacher Eligibility Test, conducted by CBSE. For the primary stage, you need Paper I. The notification says a valid CTET certificate issued on or before the closing date is essential for PRT and TGT posts, with exceptions such as Music, Art, Work Experience, Librarian and Physical Education. In practice, this means:
PRT: CTET Paper I is compulsory.
PRT (Music): CTET is not required.
Special Educator (PRT): CTET Paper I is compulsory, with up to 5% relaxation in the qualifying marks for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates.
Plan your CTET attempt early. The certificate must be in your hands before the application closes, because a result that arrives later will not be accepted for that cycle.
Age limit and reference date
The upper age limit is 30 years for PRT, PRT (Music) and Special Educator (PRT). The minimum age is 18 years. The notification measures age and other eligibility on the closing date for online applications, which it fixed at 4 December 2025. The last date was later extended to 11 December 2025 through a public notice, so read that notice to see which date applied to your claim. You can find it at https://www.cbse.gov.in/cbsenew/documents/Public_Notice_Qualification_Date_Ext_KVS_NVS_05122025.pdf.
Because the date of birth window depends on the exact wording of the notification and its closing date, always calculate your age from the next notification and not from this one.
Age relaxation
The 2025-26 notification gives these upper age relaxations. Only the single highest relaxation is granted. Concessions cannot be added together.
Category | Relaxation | Resulting upper age (30 plus relaxation) |
|---|---|---|
SC and ST | 5 years | 35 years |
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years | 33 years |
Women, all categories | 10 years | 40 years |
PwBD, General | 10 years | 40 years |
PwBD, OBC-NCL | 13 years | 43 years |
PwBD, SC and ST | 15 years | 45 years |
Regular KVS employees: General, OBC, SC and ST | 5, 8, 10 years | 35, 38, 40 years |
Candidates with 3 years of continuous Central Government service in the same or allied cadre: General, OBC, SC and ST | 5, 8, 10 years | 35, 38, 40 years |
Ex-servicemen (after deducting military service): General, OBC, SC and ST | 3, 6, 8 years | 33, 36, 38 years |
The last column is a simple calculation for quick reference, not a figure printed in the notification. Some further conditions apply:
Women: The notification states the 10-year relaxation for women for PGT, TGT, Librarian and PRT posts. It does not say clearly whether PRT (Music) is covered, so read the clause if you apply for that post.
Women with disabilities: The women's relaxation does not apply to women with disabilities. They use the PwBD relaxation.
KVS employees with disabilities: They get an additional 5 years.
Other conditions and certificates
Language ability: You must be able to teach through Hindi and English medium. Music candidates need a working knowledge of both languages.
Computer knowledge: Desirable for all three posts.
OBC-NCL certificate: It must be issued between 1 January 2025 and the last date of application, in the prescribed format.
SC and ST certificate: You must hold it by the closing date, otherwise the candidature is rejected.
EWS certificate: Family income must be below Rs. 8 lakh with the asset limits applying, and the certificate must be valid for the year of notification. You show it during documentation.
PwBD candidates: A UDID card is preferred. You must meet the functional requirements listed for the post, and shortlisted candidates must produce a medical certificate at the final stage.
Who may not be eligible
These are common reasons for rejection, drawn from the conditions above.
Music candidates with only a diploma: A Diploma in Music is not accepted for PRT (Music).
PRT without CTET Paper I: The certificate must be issued on or before the closing date.
Special Educator without RCI registration: A valid CRR number is compulsory.
Marks below 50% in Class XII: The notification sets 50% as the minimum, with no relaxation stated in the clauses on this page.
Age above the limit after relaxation: Only the highest applicable relaxation counts.
Late or wrong category certificates: An OBC-NCL certificate issued before 1 January 2025 does not meet the notification's date condition.
Eligibility examples
These cases are illustrations to help you apply the rules. They are not official decisions.

If your case does not fit any of these, compare your documents with the clause for your post. Eligibility is checked at document verification as well, and a claim that cannot be supported by certificates can lead to cancellation of candidature.
Application fee and documents
For PRT, the examination fee was Rs. 1,500 and the processing fee Rs. 500. SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates paid only the Rs. 500 processing fee. The fee table did not list PRT (Music) and Special Educator (PRT) separately. Payment was online only and non-refundable. Keep these documents ready:
Photograph and signature: Recent scanned images in JPG or JPEG format.
Educational certificates: Class X for date of birth, Class XII, the diploma or degree and the CTET certificate.
Category and disability documents: OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS or disability certificates as applicable.
Service documents: For serving employees and ex-servicemen who claim relaxation.
See the KVS PRT overview for dates and vacancies, and the KVS PRT exam pattern page for what to expect after you apply.
How to check your eligibility before applying
Pick the post: Match your qualification with the post. A music graduate applies for PRT (Music), and a special education diploma holder with RCI registration applies for Special Educator.
Check your CTET: Confirm that your Paper I certificate is valid and was issued before the closing date.
Calculate your age: Use the closing date of the new notification, then apply the single highest relaxation that fits you.
Match certificates: Check that the format and date of every category certificate follow the notification.
Read the clause word for word: The CBSE FAQ for this recruitment advises candidates to compare their qualification with the notification word by word and not to interpret it.
