KVS PRT Syllabus 2025-26: Tier-1 and Tier-2 Topic List

The KVS PRT syllabus is split across two exam stages. Tier-1 is a screening paper on general skills, and Tier-2 is the subject knowledge paper that decides your merit. This page gives a stage-wise checklist for the Primary Teacher (PRT) post, with notes for PRT (Music) and Special Educator (PRT), based on Recruitment Notification 01/2025 of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS).

A note on sources: the notification names every Tier-1 part and says Tier-1 is set at Senior Secondary level, but it does not give a topic-wise list for Tier-1 or Tier-2. KVS has put a separate Tier-2 syllabus document on its website. The topic lists below are a working checklist built from the notification, the primary school curriculum and earlier KVS papers. Use them to plan your study, and confirm against the official document before you finalise your plan.

Tier-1 runs for 2 hours and Tier-2 for 2 hours 30 minutes, with no separate time limit for individual parts.

Key points to know first

  • Tier-1 only screens: It shortlists candidates in a 1:10 ratio for Tier-2. Its marks do not enter the final merit, but a weak Tier-1 can end your attempt.

  • Tier-2 carries the merit: Tier-2 has 85% weightage in the final merit, so most of your study time should go here.

  • Level of questions: Tier-1 is at Senior Secondary level. Tier-2 content is drawn from primary classes and from teaching methods, but questions test understanding, not just recall.

  • Language choices: Part VI of Tier-1 is in the Modern Indian Language you chose in the application. Tier-2 is bilingual in Hindi and English.

  • Older pages mislead: Some websites still show a single computer-based paper of 180 marks or the older four-part KVS syllabus. The 2025-26 notification uses the two-tier scheme above.

Tier-1 syllabus

Tier-1 has six parts. All six are compulsory, and each correct answer earns 3 marks.

Part

Topics to cover

Start with

General Reasoning

Series (number, letter, figure), analogy, classification, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, ranking, syllogism, statement and conclusion, Venn diagrams, non-verbal reasoning

Series, analogy and coding-decoding, which are quick to score

Numeric Ability

Number system, simplification, percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, mensuration, data interpretation

Simplification and percentage, then ratio and average

Basic Computer Literacy

Computer fundamentals, hardware and software, input and output devices, operating systems, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint basics, internet and email, cyber safety, common abbreviations

Fundamentals and MS Office, then internet and security

General Knowledge

Current affairs, Indian history and culture, geography, polity and the Constitution, economy basics, general science, sports, awards, books and authors, important days, education-related news and policies

Last 12 months of current affairs, then static GK and education policy

English Language Competency

Reading comprehension, grammar (tenses, articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, voice, narration), vocabulary, synonyms and antonyms, idioms, error spotting, sentence arrangement

Grammar rules, then comprehension practice

Other Modern Indian Language

Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, idioms and proverbs, correct usage in the language you chose

Grammar and vocabulary in your chosen language

Questions 1 to 80 appear in English and your chosen Indian language, questions 81 to 90 are in English, and questions 91 to 100 are in the language you chose for Part VI. The medium cannot be changed after submission of the form.

The first four parts carry 60 marks each, which means 240 of the 300 marks come from reasoning, numeric ability, computers and general knowledge. Use that to decide your daily time split. Candidates from teaching backgrounds often under-prepare for numeric ability and reasoning, so test them early.

Tier-2 syllabus for PRT

Tier-2 is the subject knowledge paper. It has 60 objective questions and 10 descriptive questions. For PRT, the working checklist covers four areas.

Child development and pedagogy

  • Development of the child: Physical, cognitive, social, emotional and moral development, with stages of primary school age.

  • Learning theories: Behaviourism, cognitivism and constructivism, with the ideas of Piaget, Vygotsky, Kohlberg and Gardner applied to classroom examples.

  • Inclusive education: Diversity in the classroom, learners with special needs, gender sensitivity, multilingual classrooms and the RTE Act 2009.

  • Teaching and assessment: Lesson and unit planning, teaching-learning material, ICT in teaching, formative and summative assessment, continuous and comprehensive evaluation, remedial teaching.

  • Policy perspectives: NEP 2020 with its focus on foundational literacy and numeracy, the National Curriculum Framework for school education and the idea of play-based learning.

Languages: Hindi and English

Expect grammar, vocabulary and comprehension, plus how a language is taught in primary classes. Cover parts of speech, tenses, voice and narration, punctuation, idioms, unseen passages, listening and speaking skills, and the stages of reading and writing development. Hindi questions are asked in Hindi and English questions in English, so practise both.

Mathematics

The base is primary-level mathematics as taught in Classes I to V in NCERT books.

  • Numbers and operations: Place value, four operations, factors and multiples, fractions, decimals and money.

  • Geometry and measurement: Shapes, solids, lines and angles, symmetry, length, weight, capacity, time and perimeter and area.

  • Data and patterns: Data handling, simple graphs and patterns in numbers and shapes.

  • Teaching mathematics: Mental arithmetic, common errors of young learners and use of concrete objects.

Environmental studies

Cover the themes of the primary EVS books: family and friends, food, water, shelter, travel, plants and animals, things we make and do, and local occupations. Add basic ideas of environment protection, natural resources, weather and simple science concepts, plus how to teach EVS through activities and observation.

Descriptive questions

The 10 descriptive questions carry 40 marks. Prepare short, structured answers on topics such as a lesson plan outline, a classroom problem and its solution, an assessment idea, or a short note on a policy. Time is limited, so practise answers of 80 to 120 words.

Where to put your Tier-2 study time

The notification does not give a topic-wise weightage for Tier-2. The table below is a suggested split of study time for a PRT candidate, not an official weightage.

Area

Why it matters

Suggested share of Tier-2 study time

Child development and pedagogy

Concept-based questions that need clear understanding of theories and classroom use

30%

Languages (Hindi and English)

Grammar, comprehension and language teaching in two languages

25%

Mathematics

Easy to score if basics are strong, but needs speed

20%

Environmental studies

Wide but simple, and linked to current awareness

15%

Descriptive writing practice

40 marks from 10 questions, and answers need structure

10%

Change the split after your first few tests. If mathematics keeps costing you marks, move time there, and cut back on areas where you already score consistently.

Syllabus notes for PRT (Music) and Special Educator (PRT)

These two posts share the two-tier structure and the Tier-1 scheme, but Tier-2 content differs. The notification gives one Tier-2 scheme of 60 objective and 10 descriptive questions, so expect the same format with different subject content.

  • PRT (Music): Expect music theory and practice at the level of a Bachelor's degree, along with child development and teaching methods. Cover swar, taal and laya, major ragas and taals, notation systems, Indian musical instruments, folk and classical forms, the history of Indian music and how music is taught to young children.

  • Special Educator (PRT): Expect inclusive education and special needs content. Cover types and causes of disability, identification and assessment, individualised education plans, assistive devices, curriculum adaptation, teaching strategies for different disabilities, the RPwD Act 2016 and the RCI framework.

For both posts, check the official Tier-2 syllabus document for the exact units.

Common syllabus mistakes

  • Ignoring Tier-1 because it is only screening: A low Tier-1 score can keep you out of Tier-2, so keep daily practice going in all six parts.

  • Studying only theory: Pedagogy questions are usually based on classroom situations. Practise applying a concept to a case, not just defining it.

  • Skipping the second language: Part VI carries 30 marks. Choose a language you read comfortably and revise its grammar regularly.

  • Leaving descriptive practice for the end: Writing is a skill that needs weeks of practice, so start by the second month.

Is there a syllabus for the interview?

No. The notification gives no syllabus for the interview, which carries 100 marks and 15% weightage. Interviews for teaching posts usually test teaching aptitude, subject understanding, communication and classroom awareness, but this is a general expectation and not an official list. Prepare a short demonstration lesson and revise your Tier-2 pedagogy notes.

How to cover the syllabus

A phased plan of about four months works well for most candidates. Adjust it to the time you have.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4, build the base: Read NCERT primary books for mathematics and EVS, and revise child development and pedagogy. Start reasoning and numeric ability for 45 minutes a day.

  2. Weeks 5 to 8, add Tier-1 depth: Cover computer basics, general knowledge and grammar. Begin a monthly current-affairs notebook.

  3. Weeks 9 to 12, practise by topic: Take topic-wise tests and sectional tests of 20 minutes. Practise descriptive answers once a week.

  4. Weeks 13 to 16, simulate the exam: Attempt full-length papers in the exam timing, review each paper the same day and revise from your error log.

Testkart offers online tests that follow the Tier-1 parts, so you can check your accuracy section by section and spot weak areas. You can also solve previous year papers to see how questions are framed, and keep KVS PRT study notes handy for revision of child development and pedagogy. When you are ready for full-length practice, move to the KVS PRT mock tests.

Where to check the official syllabus

Always confirm the latest syllabus on official pages. KVS keeps its syllabus and recruitment documents on its website at https://kvs.gov.in/.
