A four-year integrated degree with a B.Ed. component and 50% marks also qualifies. A post-graduate route with 55% marks and a three-year integrated B.Ed.-M.Ed. is allowed in specified cases. You must also hold a CTET Paper II certificate for most TGT subjects, and be able to teach in English and Hindi.

Tier 2

Tier 2 is a subject knowledge test of 100 marks in 2.5 hours: 60 objective questions of 1 mark each (0.25 marks off for a wrong answer) and 10 descriptive questions for 40 marks.

What this means for you

  • Tier 1 is a gate: It only decides whether you reach Tier 2, so accuracy matters more than attempting everything.

  • Tier 2 decides your rank: Subject depth and answer writing carry most of your final merit.

  • Do not rely on old charts: Older pages may still show earlier KVS patterns, so follow the official notification.

The KVS TGT exam pattern page explains marking and time use in detail.

Syllabus summary

Stage

What the official notification gives

Tier 1

Six named parts at graduation level; no topic-wise list

Tier 2

A subject-wise syllabus PDF published by CBSE for each TGT subject

CBSE names the Tier 1 parts but does not publish topic lists for them, so any Tier 1 topic list is a working checklist built from the part names. For Tier 2, use the official syllabus PDF for your subject. See the KVS TGT syllabus page for a stage-wise breakdown.

Selection process

  1. Tier 1: Qualifying only. Candidates are shortlisted for Tier 2 in the ratio of 1:10 against notified vacancies, category-wise, including ties at the last mark.

  2. Tier 2: Subject test of 100 marks. Candidates are shortlisted for the interview in the ratio of 1:3 against vacancies, category-wise.

  3. Interview: 100 marks.

  4. Final merit: 85% weight to Tier 2 and 15% to the interview.

After merit, candidates who are in the lists of both KVS and NVS must submit their preference between the two. No waiting list is maintained.

Salary

The TGT post sits at Level 7 of the pay matrix, with a pay range of Rs. 44,900 to Rs. 1,42,400. The in-hand amount is not an official figure, and it varies with allowances, city and deductions, so check the pay slip rules at joining rather than relying on estimates.

How to prepare

Treat Tier 1 and Tier 2 as two different preparations that share some foundations, such as language, reasoning and teaching aptitude.

  • Weeks 1 to 8: Build subject concepts for Tier 2 and a daily reading habit for English and Hindi.

  • From week 3: Add reasoning, numeric ability, computer basics and current affairs for 30 to 40 minutes a day, with monthly notes.

  • From week 6: Take topic-wise tests and short sectional tests, and start writing descriptive answers by hand.

  • Final phase: Take full-length timed tests, analyse each one the same day and revise from an error log.

For timed practice in the Tier 1 and Tier 2 pattern, check the Testkart KVS TGT page for the tests, notes and courses currently listed. Pair them with the official notification and syllabus PDF so your preparation stays in line with CBSE.

Cut-off reference

CBSE has not published category-wise cut-off marks for KVS TGT in the notices we checked. It publishes shortlisting numbers and selects by rank within each category, so there is no fixed pass mark to chase. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants, so treat past figures as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin above them. See the KVS TGT cut-off page for how shortlisting works.
