KVS TGT Syllabus 2026: Tier 1 and Tier 2 Guide
The KVS TGT syllabus has two layers. Tier 1 is a common qualifying test with six named parts, and Tier 2 is a subject test with its own syllabus for each TGT subject. This page explains both for the Recruitment Notification 01/2025 cycle that CBSE ran for Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS).
CBSE names the six Tier 1 parts and sets the level at graduation, but it does not publish a topic-wise list for them. The Tier 1 topic lists below are therefore a working checklist built from the part names and from the level the notification states, not an official list. The Tier 2 syllabus is official, and the page tells you where to read it in full.

Key changes to know
One common Tier 1: Every TGT subject writes the same Tier 1 structure, so your subject knowledge is first tested in Tier 2.
Subject syllabus in a CBSE PDF: The detailed Tier 2 syllabus is in a CBSE annexure covering teaching posts in KVS and NVS, not in the notification text.
Old syllabi are archived: KVS keeps older subjective syllabi on its website. Older pages may still show them, so use the Tier 2 syllabus issued with Notification 01/2025.
Tier 1 syllabus
Tier 1 has 100 questions in six parts. Parts I to IV are bilingual in English and one of 12 Indian languages. Part V is in English only, and Part VI is only in the language you chose in the application form.
Part | Topics to cover (working checklist) | Start with |
|---|---|---|
General Reasoning (20 questions) | Analogies, series, coding-decoding, directions, blood relations, syllogisms, seating arrangements, Venn diagrams, non-verbal reasoning | Series and coding-decoding |
Numeric Ability (20 questions) | Number system, percentages, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, time and work, simple and compound interest, averages, data interpretation | Percentages and ratio |
Basic Computer Literacy (20 questions) | Hardware and software, operating systems, MS Office tools, internet and email, networking basics, cyber safety, common abbreviations | Hardware, software and MS Office |
General Knowledge (20 questions) | Current affairs, Indian polity, history, geography, general science, economy basics, awards, books, sports and education-related facts | Last 6 months of current affairs |
Language Competency, English (10 questions) | Reading comprehension, grammar, error spotting, vocabulary, sentence improvement | Grammar rules and comprehension |
Language Competency, other Indian language (10 questions) | Comprehension, grammar and vocabulary in the language you chose | Comprehension passages |
The first four parts carry 60 marks each and the two language parts carry 30 marks each, so general ability decides most of the Tier 1 score. Because Tier 1 only qualifies you for Tier 2, a steady, accurate score in these four parts is more useful than a risky attempt rate. The notification sets the expected knowledge level for TGT at graduation.
Tier 2 syllabus by subject
Tier 2 is a subject knowledge test of 100 marks. CBSE publishes the syllabus as a post-wise annexure, and the topics below are summarised from it. Always open the official PDF for your subject before you finalise a study plan.

|---|---|---|---|
English and Hindi | Language Competency parts | English paper for English TGTs; Hindi paper for Hindi TGTs | Build grammar and reading once, then add subject depth |

Interview
The interview is worth 100 marks and carries 15% weight in final merit. The notification does not publish a syllabus for it. Prepare through your subject knowledge, classroom scenarios and your understanding of how Kendriya Vidyalayas work.
How to cover the syllabus
Weeks 1 to 4: Read the official annexure for your subject and list every topic. Start the Tier 1 parts with reasoning and numeric ability.
Weeks 5 to 10: Finish the subject topics one unit at a time, and add 30 minutes of current affairs each day.
Weeks 11 to 14: Take topic-wise tests and write timed descriptive answers by hand.
Final weeks: Take full-length mocks, analyse them the same day and revise from an error log.
For timed practice, you can attempt KVS TGT tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to plan your revision. Pair them with previous year papers to understand the real difficulty level.
