KVS Eligibility Criteria 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and CTET Guide

The KVS Eligibility Criteria 2026 decide whether you can apply for teaching posts in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) at all, before your preparation even starts to matter. They come from Recruitment Notification 01/2025, which the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) issued for KVS and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) on 13 November 2025.

Eligibility rests on four checks: your educational and professional qualification, CTET where the post needs it, your age on the cut-off date, and experience for senior posts. This page explains each one post by post, from PRT, TGT and PGT to Librarian, Vice-Principal and Principal, along with age relaxations, subject-combination rules and the mistakes that most often lead to rejection. Applications for this cycle closed on 11 December 2025, so treat this as the reference for checking your profile against the next notification as well.

The minimum age for every post is 18. The sections below explain the detail behind each row, which is where most eligibility mistakes happen.

The Cut-off Date for Eligibility

The notification fixed 4 December 2025, the original last date to apply, as the date for judging age, educational qualification and experience. The application window was later extended to 11 December 2025. If you applied in the extended window, confirm on the official notice which date applies to you, because the extension notice moved the last date to apply.

In practice, this means:

  • Results must be out: Your degree, B.Ed or D.El.Ed result must have been declared on or before the cut-off date. Appearing in the final year is not enough.

  • CTET must be in hand: The CTET certificate must be issued on or before the closing date.

  • Experience is counted up to the cut-off: For Vice-Principal and Principal, service after that date does not count.

Educational Qualification by Post

PRT (Primary Teacher)

You need Senior Secondary (Class 12) with at least 50 percent marks plus one of the following:

  • 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed): From an institution recognised by NCTE.

  • 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed): The integrated route for primary teaching.

  • 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education): Recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).

You also need CTET Paper I. The 01/2025 notification lists no B.Ed route for regular PRT posts, so a graduate with B.Ed but no D.El.Ed or B.El.Ed cannot apply. PRT (Music) and Special Educator (PRT) have their own qualification rules, so read their annexures separately.

TGT (Trained Graduate Teacher)

The base qualification is a bachelor's degree with at least 50 percent marks both in the subject combination and in aggregate, plus a B.Ed with at least 50 percent from an NCTE-recognised institution. A 4-year integrated degree that includes B.Ed, with at least 50 percent, also works. The subject you studied at graduation decides which TGT posts you can apply for.

TGT post

Subject requirement at graduation

Hindi, English, Sanskrit

The language studied as a subject in all three years of the degree

Mathematics

Mathematics plus any two of Physics, Chemistry, Electronics, Computer Science and Statistics

Science

Botany, Zoology and Chemistry

Social Studies

Any two of History, Geography, Economics and Political Science, one of which must be History or Geography

Physical and Health Education

A degree in Physical Education as specified in the notification

Art Education, Music, Work Experience

A degree or diploma in the specific discipline, as listed in the post annexure

These combinations follow the KVS recruitment rules. Before applying, match your marksheets year by year against the annexure for your post, because a missing subject in one year is a common reason for rejection.

PGT (Post Graduate Teacher)

You need a master's degree with at least 50 percent marks in the subject of the post, plus a B.Ed with at least 50 percent, or an integrated course recognised by NCTE. A few subject-specific points to check:

  • PGT Commerce: M.Com with Accountancy, Cost Accountancy or Financial Accountancy as a major subject. M.Com in Applied or Business Economics does not qualify.

  • PGT Biology: A master's in Botany, Zoology, Life Science or Bio Science, usually with both Botany and Zoology studied at graduation.

  • PGT Computer Science and Biotechnology: The list of accepted degrees is specific, so check the annexure before assuming your degree counts.

PGT posts do not require CTET, which surprises many applicants who expect a teacher eligibility test for every teaching post.

Librarian

A bachelor's degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from a recognised university is the core qualification. Knowledge of computer applications is also part of the requirement. CTET is not needed.

Vice-Principal and Principal

Both posts need a master's degree with at least 50 percent marks and a B.Ed with at least 50 percent, plus working knowledge of Hindi and English and computer applications. Experience is the deciding factor.

Post

Experience routes

Pay level

Vice-Principal

Working as Vice-Principal at Level 10, or at least 6 years of regular service as PGT or Lecturer at Level 8

Working as Principal at Level 12, or at least 3 years as Vice-Principal, or at least 12 years as PGT or Lecturer at Level 8

Level 12

Experience must be regular service in Central or State Government or an autonomous body at the stated pay level. Contractual or guest teaching usually does not count, so keep service certificates that show the pay level clearly. Assistant Commissioner draws on serving Principals; check the notification for its exact experience rule.

For music and special educator posts, the CTET rule is set in the post annexure, so check it there. If you are still to clear CTET, see the CTET exam guide for the next session, since a certificate issued after the closing date will not count for this cycle.

Age is counted on the cut-off date in the notification. Non-teaching posts have their own limits, generally lower for clerical posts, so check the post table in the notification if you are applying for one.

Age Relaxation

Category

Upper age relaxation

SC and ST

5 years

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)

3 years

Women (PRT, TGT, PGT and Librarian only)

10 years

PwBD: General / OBC / SC-ST

10 / 13 / 15 years

Regular KVS employees: General / OBC / SC-ST

5 / 8 / 10 years

Three points to keep in mind:

  • Relaxations are not added together: If you fall under more than one category, only the highest single relaxation applies.

  • Women's relaxation is limited: It covers PRT, TGT, PGT and Librarian, not Vice-Principal or Principal.

  • OBC must be Non-Creamy Layer: You need a valid central-format OBC-NCL certificate; OBC candidates in the creamy layer are treated as General.

Nationality and Other Conditions

  • Nationality: Candidates must meet the nationality conditions in the notification, which follow standard Government of India rules.

  • Teaching in Hindi and English: Proficiency to teach in both Hindi and English media is part of the qualification set for teaching posts.

  • Computer knowledge: Knowledge of computer applications is listed for several posts, and Tier 1 tests it directly.

  • All-India posting: Selected candidates can be posted to any Kendriya Vidyalaya in India, and serve a two-year probation.

  • Medical fitness: Appointment is subject to medical fitness and verification of documents and character.

  • No attempt limit: KVS does not cap attempts. If you meet the age and qualification rules, you can apply in every cycle.

Who Is Not Eligible

Most rejections come from a small set of avoidable errors:

  • B.Ed holders applying for PRT: Without D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed or the RCI diploma, the application fails.

  • Marks just below 50 percent: The minimum applies to the subject combination and the aggregate. Keep your university's CGPA-to-percentage conversion rule with your documents.

  • Results declared after the cut-off date: Final-year students whose results came later are not eligible for this cycle.

  • CTET issued late or missing: A CTET qualified after the closing date does not count.

  • Wrong subject combination: For example, a B.Sc with Mathematics, Physics and Biology but no Chemistry does not meet the TGT Science combination.

  • Experience at the wrong level: For Vice-Principal and Principal, years at a lower pay level or on contract do not meet the rule.

  • Over age after relaxation: Adding two relaxations together to get under the limit is not allowed.
