NABARD Development Assistant Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims, Mains and LPT
The NABARD Development Assistant exam pattern has three stages: an online preliminary exam of 100 marks, an online main exam of 200 marks and a qualifying Language Proficiency Test (LPT). NABARD uses the prelims only to shortlist, so your final selection rests on the mains score, provided you clear the LPT where it applies.
This page follows the 2026 cycle, which NABARD notified in January 2026 for Development Assistant and Development Assistant (Hindi) posts. It sets out the tests for both posts, the marking and negative marking, how timing works, and what the numbers mean for the way you split your preparation and your time in the exam hall.

Key Changes to Know
Same structure as 2022: The 2026 cycle was reported with the same stages, tests and marks as the 2022 notification.
Two patterns, not one: Development Assistant (Hindi) has a different mix in both stages, with Professional Knowledge (Hindi) in place of quantitative aptitude.
Mains timing is reported differently: The 2022 advertisement gave 90 minutes for all objective tests together. 2026 summaries show sectional timings that total 105 minutes for objective tests and 135 minutes overall.
Older pages may still show a single combined pattern for both posts, so follow the post-wise tables below and your call letter.

|---|---|---|---|
Test of English Language | 40 | 40 | 20 minutes (reported) |
Test of Numerical Ability (Quantitative Aptitude) | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes (reported) |
Test of Reasoning | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes (reported) |

Prelims marks are used only to draw up the mains list. In 2022, NABARD shortlisted candidates state-wise and category-wise at about 25 times the number of vacancies (a 1:25 ratio), and it also set sectional minimums. Questions other than English are bilingual, in English and Hindi.

Timing and language
The sectional timings above come from 2026 summaries and could not be matched to the official information handout. The 2022 advertisement listed 90 minutes for the objective tests together and 30 minutes for the descriptive test. Your call letter and information handout are the final word on timing. Objective tests are bilingual; the descriptive test must be answered in English.
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Correct answer: 1 mark for every objective question in both stages.
Wrong answer: One-fourth of the marks assigned to that question is deducted, which is 0.25 marks.
Unanswered question: No penalty.
Descriptive test: Marked by evaluators out of 50, with no negative marking.
Cut-offs: NABARD sets overall and sectional cut-offs, state-wise and category-wise, based on performance.
What the Pattern Means for You
Mains test (DA) | Share of 200 marks | What it rewards |
|---|---|---|
General Awareness | 25% | Steady reading on agriculture, rural development and banking |
Descriptive English | 25% | Regular, timed writing practice |
Computer Knowledge | 20% | Revision of facts and terms |
Reasoning | 15% | Puzzle practice and logic |
Quantitative Aptitude | 15% | Calculation speed and DI |
Knowledge sections carry 70% of the mains: General Awareness, Computer Knowledge and Descriptive English together make up 140 of 200 marks for DA. Aptitude gets you through prelims; knowledge and writing get you selected.
A wrong guess costs a quarter mark: If you can rule out two options, a guess is worth taking. With five options, as in most bank-style papers, a blind guess gains nothing on average.
Sectional minimums matter: Leaving one section very weak can disqualify you even with a good total, so do not drop any test entirely.
DA (Hindi) is a different exam in practice: Professional Knowledge (Hindi) alone is 50 mains marks, more than any other objective section for that post.
Language Proficiency Test
Candidates provisionally selected after the mains, including those on the wait list, take a test of the official language of the state they applied for. It is held at the concerned Regional Office and is qualifying only.
Who is exempt: Candidates who passed Class 10 or 12 with that state's language as a subject, on producing the marksheet.
What it checks: Ability to read, write, speak and understand the language.
What happens if you fail: You will not be appointed, even after clearing the mains.
Example state (2022 annexure) | LPT language |
|---|---|
Andhra Pradesh | Telugu |
Karnataka | Kannada |
Maharashtra | Marathi |
Nagaland | English |
The full state-language list is an annexure to each notification; check it before choosing your state.
Final Merit: How Selection Is Decided
Provisional selection is made state-wise and category-wise on the basis of mains marks, subject to the sectional and overall cut-offs. Prelims scores are not added.
A worked example for a DA candidate in the mains:
Test | Correct | Wrong | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
Reasoning (30) | 22 | 4 | 22 - 1 = 21.00 |
Quantitative Aptitude (30) | 18 | 6 | 18 - 1.5 = 16.50 |
General Awareness (50) | 28 | 8 | 28 - 2 = 26.00 |
Computer Knowledge (40) | 26 | 6 | 26 - 1.5 = 24.50 |
Descriptive English (50) | - | - | 27.00 |
Total | - | - | 115.00 |
This is an illustration, not a target. The candidate lost 6 marks to 24 wrong answers, which is often the difference between selection and the wait list. Mains cut-offs vary widely by state and category; see the cut-off page for indicative past figures.
Prelims vs Mains: How the Focus Shifts
Aspect | Prelims | Mains |
|---|---|---|
Purpose | Shortlisting only | Decides provisional selection |
Sections | English, Quant (or Professional Knowledge, Hindi), Reasoning | Reasoning, Quant (or Professional Knowledge, Hindi), General Awareness, Computer Knowledge, Descriptive English |
Main challenge | Speed under 20-minute sectional timers | Breadth of knowledge and writing quality |
Level | Close to bank clerk prelims | Harder puzzles and DI, plus rural and agricultural awareness |
English | 40 objective questions | No objective English; 50-mark descriptive test instead |
One practical result: English carries the most prelims marks but appears in the mains only as writing. Keep grammar sharp for prelims, and from the start, write regularly so the mains descriptive test does not come as a shock.
Descriptive Test: How to Approach It
The descriptive test asks for three pieces of writing in 30 minutes: an essay, a precis and a report or letter. NABARD does not publish word limits or a marks split in advance; these appear on the question screen, so read the instructions before you start typing.
Essay: Use a short introduction, two or three clear points with one example each, and a one-line conclusion. Topics often connect to rural development, banking, technology or social issues.
Precis: Read the passage twice, note the central idea, and write it in your own words at about one-third of the original length. Give it a title if asked.
Letter or report: Get the format right (sender, date, subject, salutation, body, closing) and keep the tone formal. Cover every point in the question.
Typing practice: The mains is conducted online, so practise typing your answers within the time limit, not only writing them by hand.
Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy
Prelims, 20 minutes a section: In English, do grammar and vocabulary first, then the reading passage. In quant, clear simplification and series before DI. In reasoning, take the quick single-question types before long puzzles.
General Awareness in under 25 minutes: Answer what you know in one pass and do not linger; recall-based questions either come quickly or not at all.
Computer Knowledge: Aim for a fast first pass, then use the remaining time on questions you narrowed to two options.
Descriptive, three tasks in 30 minutes: A workable split is about 12 minutes for the essay, 9 for the precis and 9 for the letter or report. Type a short outline before each piece.
Practise in the same timing: NABARD does not host an official mock test for this exam, so full-length mocks that copy the sectional timers are the closest rehearsal you can get.
Official Source and Older Pages
NABARD publishes the notification, information handouts, call letters and results under careers notices on https://www.nabard.org/. Older pages may still show 2022 timing or a single pattern for both posts, so follow the information handout issued with your call letter.
