Mains is four times the length of Prelims and carries General Awareness and Computer Knowledge, so it needs a different preparation plan. Selection process

  1. Prelims: used to shortlist candidates for Mains, with sectional qualifying marks.

  2. Mains: the main merit test, and marks here decide your rank in your state.

  3. Regional Language Test: qualifying only. You must be able to read, write and speak the language of your chosen state or UT.

  4. Document verification and medical examination: final checks before an offer.

Final merit is reported to be based on Mains marks, subject to clearing the other stages. Confirm the exact rule in the notification.

Salary and career growth

The notified pay scale is reported to start at a basic pay of Rs. 36,290. Total monthly emoluments including allowances are reported as around Rs. 63,000 in a metro city. This is not an official figure, and it varies by posting and city. Allowances and benefits include dearness allowance, house rent allowance, medical benefits and retirement benefits as per company rules. One aggregator still lists an older pay scale starting at Rs. 22,405, so rely on the notification for the current scale.

How to prepare

  • Start with Prelims accuracy: each Prelims section has its own minimum, so a weak English or Reasoning score can stop you even with a strong total.

  • Build Mains subjects early: add General Awareness and Computer Knowledge alongside Prelims practice instead of waiting for the result.

  • Learn your regional language: do not leave the Regional Language Test to the end, especially if your state language is not your first.

  • Practise sectional timing: Mains gives 15 to 30 minutes per section, so train with a timer.

Cut-off reference

The previous cycle Prelims sectional minimum for UR and EWS candidates was 14.25 in English, 12.25 in Reasoning and 11.50 in Quantitative Aptitude. The previous Mains cut-off was 90 for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD, 100 for ex-servicemen and 110 for UR and EWS, out of 200. Treat these as a benchmark only. See the NICL Assistant cut off page for how they are decided.
