NICL Assistant Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims and Mains

The NICL Assistant exam pattern has two online objective stages, Prelims and Mains, followed by a qualifying Regional Language Test. Prelims is a 100-mark test of 60 minutes, and Mains is a 200-mark test of 120 minutes. This page explains each test, the marking, and what the numbers mean for your time on exam day.

The details below are from the 2026 notification as reported by several sources. Mains sectional timings are the least consistent detail across sources, so check them in your call letter.

One source lists a longer time for Reasoning, which makes the sectional total exceed 120 minutes. The version above adds up to the stated total, but the call letter and the notification on nationalinsurance.nic.co.in are the final word.

Marking scheme and negative marking

  • Correct answer: one mark in every test, since marks equal the number of questions.

  • Wrong answer: one-fourth of the marks for that question is deducted, so 0.25 per wrong answer.

  • Unattempted question: no deduction.

For example, 20 correct and 8 wrong answers in a section give 20 minus 2, which is 18 marks.

What the pattern means for you

  • Every question is worth one mark: start with the questions you can solve fastest, because there is no extra credit for hard ones.

  • A wrong guess costs 0.25: guess only when you can remove at least two options.

  • Prelims has sectional minimums: a low English or Reasoning score can end your attempt even with a high total, so no test can be ignored.

  • Mains is fast: 40 questions in 15 minutes for General Awareness and Computer Knowledge means you must know these answers, not work them out.

Regional Language Test and later stages

The Regional Language Test checks that you can read, write and speak the language of your chosen state or UT. It carries no marks, but failing it can cost you the job. Document verification and a pre-employment medical examination follow, and no interview is reported. Check the call letter for the test date.

Final merit calculation

Reports say final merit is based on Mains marks, with Prelims used only to shortlist candidates. If so, a candidate with 125 marks in Mains is ranked above one with 120, whatever their Prelims scores. Confirm the exact weightage in the official notification.

Time management

  • Prelims: about 20 minutes per test means roughly 40 seconds per question in English and 35 in Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude. Skip any question that crosses a minute.

  • Mains: start each test with the easy sets, and finish 15-minute tests with a quick scan for skipped questions.

  • Practice: take sectional timed tests every week, and full-length mocks in the last month.
