State Government Recruitment

Punjab Police Head Constable

Punjab Police Head Constable is a recruitment exam for the recruitment of Constables, relevant to candidates preparing for state government department recruitment.

The Punjab Police Head Constable recruitment fills Head Constable posts in the Investigation Cadre of Punjab Police through direct recruitment. It asks for a graduation degree, and selected candidates join the cadre that handles crime investigation across the state. Selection is through a written exam followed by physical tests.

The latest completed cycle is the 2021 recruitment (Advertisement No. 4 of 2021), whose written exam was held on 15 October 2022. No new Head Constable notification has been released as of October 2026. This page explains the eligibility rules, exam pattern, syllabus, selection process and pay as notified in the latest cycle, so you can start preparing before the next notification arrives.

Notification Status

The most recent Head Constable recruitment in the Investigation Cadre was notified on 4 August 2021. Applications were reopened in August 2022, the written exam was held on 15 October 2022, and answer keys, results and cut-off marks followed by December 2022.

Since then, Punjab Police has notified Constable recruitments (including the 2026 drive for 3,298 Constables) and the state government has announced an Assistant Sub-Inspector drive. None of these is a Head Constable notification. If you see a specific vacancy figure for an "upcoming" Head Constable recruitment, check whether an official notice backs it before relying on it.

The 2026 Constable exam moved to a merit paper plus a qualifying Punjabi paper with no negative marking, so the next Head Constable notification may also change the pattern. Treat the 2021 structure below as the latest official reference, not a guarantee.

The fee was payable online only and was not refundable. These figures are from the 2021 cycle and may be revised.

The application process in the last cycle ran as follows:

  1. Open the recruitment link from the official Punjab Police website.

  2. Register with a valid email address and mobile number.

  3. Log in and fill the application form, including your home district and category.

  4. Upload your photo (recent, white background) and signature as JPEG files of 50 to 200 KB each, plus your Matriculation, graduation, Punjabi and category certificates.

  5. Pay the fee online and save a copy of the submitted form.

Applications are not scrutinised before the written test. Your eligibility is checked later, so a wrong category, a missing Punjabi certificate or a degree completed after the closing date can still lead to rejection after you clear the exam. If you submit more than one form, only the latest one is considered.

Exam Pattern

Stage I: Written Test

The written test has two objective papers held on the same day. Both papers are bilingual (Punjabi and English); where the two versions differ, the English version prevails.

Each question carries 4 marks, and 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer. Where the test runs in several shifts, scores are normalised using a mean and standard deviation method before merit is drawn up.

What this means for you:

  • Two sections carry half the marks: General Awareness and Reasoning together account for 400 of the 800 marks.

  • Smart guessing pays, careless errors do not: A wrong answer costs a quarter of a correct one, so a guess after ruling out one or two options is usually worth taking. Rushed mistakes on easy questions, though, add up quickly.

  • Each paper must clear its own minimum: A strong Paper 2 cannot rescue a Paper 1 below the qualifying mark.

  • Paper 1 breaks ties: After age, higher Paper 1 marks decide rank between candidates with equal totals.

The advertisement called this a computer-based test, but the October 2022 exam was held in OMR mode, so follow whatever mode the next notification states.

Stage II: Document Scrutiny, PMT and PST

Shortlisted candidates appear for document scrutiny, height measurement (PMT) and the Physical Screening Test (PST), all qualifying only.

Candidate group

PST events

Male (except ex-servicemen aged 35 and above)

800 m run in 4 minutes (1 chance); long jump 2.75 m (3 chances); high jump 0.90 m (3 chances)

Male ex-servicemen aged 35 and above

800 m run or walk in 6 minutes (1 chance)

Female

400 m run in 2 minutes (1 chance); long jump 1.80 m (3 chances); high jump 0.75 m (3 chances)

Failing any one event disqualifies the candidate. Random tests for performance-enhancing drugs may also be carried out at the venue.

Selection Process

  1. Written test (Stage I): Two papers of 400 marks each. You must clear the minimum mark in each paper separately.

  2. Shortlisting: Candidates are called for Stage II on the basis of their combined normalised score, category-wise.

  3. Document scrutiny: Original certificates must match what you uploaded. A mismatch cancels candidature.

  4. PMT and PST: Qualifying only, with same-day appeals allowed at the venue.

  5. Merit list: Prepared only from written-test marks of candidates who clear Stage II. Ties go to the older candidate, then higher Paper 1 marks, then higher Matriculation percentage. There is no waiting list.

  6. Medical, character and certificate verification: Selection stays provisional until these are cleared.

Service is governed by the Punjab Police Act, 2007, the Punjab Police Rules, 1934 and the Punjab Investigation Cadre (Subordinate Ranks) Service Rules, 2020, which also set promotion to higher ranks within the cadre. Under the Act, moving from one cadre to another is not allowed. Recruits can be posted anywhere in Punjab, in India or abroad, and some posts are at the state headquarters in Chandigarh and SAS Nagar.

How to Prepare

With no notification out yet, you have time to build a strong base around the two-paper structure.

  • Start with General Awareness and Reasoning: They carry 50 questions each. Give Punjab history and culture, the Constitution and current legal developments steady weekly time.

  • Do not neglect Punjabi and English: They are only 20 questions each, but translation, comprehension and precis need regular practice, not last-minute revision.

  • Keep Quant at arithmetic level: The listed topics are basic arithmetic, so build speed and accuracy through topic-wise tests on Testkart rather than advanced methods.

  • Prepare for the PST early: The 800 m run in 4 minutes and the jumps need weeks of training. Many candidates clear the written test and then lose out at this stage.

Using Mock Tests

Once the basics are covered, take full-length tests in the two-paper format, timing each paper at 2 hours. After every test, review wrong answers, slow questions and skipped questions you could have solved.

Cut-off and Qualifying Marks

Two different thresholds apply. The first is the minimum qualifying mark set in the notification, which every candidate must reach in each paper after normalisation.

The second is the category-wise cut-off for Stage II shortlisting, which is usually well above the minimum and changes every cycle with difficulty, vacancies and applicants. Treat previous figures as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin above them.
