State Government Recruitment

Punjab Police Head Constable Eligibility: Age, Degree, Height

Punjab Police Head Constable eligibility rests on five conditions: Indian citizenship, a graduation degree, Punjabi studied at Matriculation level, an age between 21 and 28 years, and a minimum height. Candidates must also clear a physical screening test after the written exam. These rules apply to direct recruitment of Head Constables in the Investigation Cadre of Punjab Police.

The figures on this page come from the latest notified cycle, Advertisement No. 4 of 2021, which measured age as on 1 January 2021. No new Head Constable notification has been released as of October 2026, so the next cycle will carry fresh reference dates. This guide explains each condition, the age relaxations, how Head Constable rules differ from Constable rules, and the certificate mistakes that lead to rejection after the exam.

Educational Qualification

You need a graduation degree from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification. Any stream is accepted, so arts, commerce, science, engineering and other graduates are all eligible. The degree is a minimum requirement only. A postgraduate degree or a professional qualification earns no extra marks or preference in the merit list.

Crucial Date for the Degree

The degree must be completed on or before the closing date of the online application. In the 2021 cycle, the window first closed on 25 August 2021 and a reopened window closed on 4 September 2022. Always check which closing date the notification ties to your qualification.

  • Final-year students: If your final result is declared after the closing date, you are not eligible for that cycle, even if you clear every exam later.

  • Result declared but degree not issued: Keep the official result or provisional certificate showing a date on or before the closing date. This is what proves you held the qualification in time.

  • Distance and open learning degrees: The notification asks for a degree from a recognised university. If you studied through distance or open learning, confirm that your university and programme were recognised for the years you studied.

Why the Degree Requirement Matters

Constables need only 10+2, so the degree is what sets Head Constable recruitment apart. It reflects the investigation role of the post. The written test includes legal awareness and legal reasoning, and the syllabus is pitched at graduate level.

Punjabi Language Requirement

Every applicant must have passed Matriculation with Punjabi as a compulsory or elective subject, or an equivalent Punjabi examination recognised by the Punjab Government. The rule applies to candidates from outside Punjab and to General category candidates as well.

  • If you studied Punjabi in Class 10: Your Matriculation certificate or marksheet is the proof.

  • If you did not: You need a Punjabi qualification that the Punjab Government treats as equivalent to Matriculation-level Punjabi. Without it, you are not eligible, whatever your degree.

  • Exception for wards of defence personnel: A ward of defence service personnel who is a bonafide resident of Punjab can pass the Punjabi requirement within two years of appointment.

Holding the certificate is only half of it. Punjabi is also tested in the written exam through a 20-question, 80-mark section in Paper 1, which counts towards your score and towards the paper's minimum mark. The Punjab Police Head Constable exam pattern page explains how both papers work.

Age Limit and Relaxation

For the 2021 cycle, candidates had to be at least 21 and not more than 28 years old as on 1 January 2021. The minimum age of 21 is higher than the 18 years allowed for Punjab Police Constables.

Worked Examples

  • General candidate: Born on 15 March 1994, the candidate was 26 on 1 January 2021 and within the 21 to 28 limit.

  • SC candidate of Punjab: Aged 31 on the reference date, the candidate is over 28 but within the relaxed limit of 33, so eligible with a valid SC certificate.

  • Ex-serviceman: Aged 36 with 6 years of service, the candidate's age after deduction is 30. That is 2 years above 28, which is within the 3-year allowance, so the candidate is eligible.

Relaxation applies only to the categories listed in the notification, and only with a certificate in the required format. If you fall under more than one category, check how the notification treats combined relaxation before you count on it.

Nationality, Domicile and Reserved Categories

Any Indian citizen can apply, provided they have not taken the citizenship, permanent residency or green card of another country. Applicants from outside Punjab are eligible if they meet the degree, age and Punjabi requirements.

Reservation in Punjab Police posts is for the categories of Punjab, such as SC (Balmiki or Mazhbi Sikh), SC (Ramdasia and others), Backward Classes, EWS and ex-servicemen of Punjab. Candidates from other states generally compete for unreserved posts and do not get the age relaxation meant for Punjab categories. Check the category rules in the notification before choosing your category in the form, because a category you cannot prove can cost you the post at document scrutiny.
