Punjab Police Head Constable Cut Off and Qualifying Marks
The Punjab Police Head Constable cut off works in two layers. First, every candidate must reach a minimum qualifying mark in each of the two written papers. Second, Punjab Police shortlists candidates for the physical stage category-wise, and the last score shortlisted in each category becomes that category's cut-off. The second figure is almost always far higher than the first.
This page covers the latest completed cycle, Advertisement No. 4 of 2021, whose written test was held on 15 October 2022. It sets out the official qualifying marks, how the 2022 results were released, the factors that move the cut-off, and how to set a realistic target score before the next notification. Cut-offs change every cycle, so treat any past figure as a benchmark only.
Minimum Qualifying Marks
The notification fixes a minimum percentage for each paper. It is applied after normalisation, and both papers must clear it separately.
Category | Minimum per paper | Marks out of 400 | Minimum total if both papers just clear |
|---|---|---|---|
SC, BC, EWS and Ex-Servicemen | 25% | 100 | 200 out of 800 |
All other categories | 30% | 120 | 240 out of 800 |
Reaching these marks does not put you in the merit list. It only means your combined score is considered when candidates are ranked for Stage II.
Cut-off vs Qualifying Marks
Point | Qualifying marks | Shortlisting cut-off |
|---|---|---|
Who sets it | Fixed in the notification | Emerges from results |
Applied to | Each paper separately | Combined normalised score out of 800 |
Varies by | Category group only | Category, women's posts and each cycle |
Known in advance | Yes | No, only after the result |
How the 2022 Cut-off Was Released
After the 15 October 2022 written test, a provisional answer key was released with a short objection window, followed by the final answer key in December 2022. Results were then published category-wise, as lists of candidates shortlisted for document scrutiny and the physical tests, and physical test admit cards were issued in December 2022.
Because results came out as category-wise shortlists, the closing score of each list is the effective cut-off for that category. Testkart does not reproduce unofficial category-wise figures for this cycle. If you need the exact closing marks, check the result notices in the recruitment section of the official website, where your own scorecard was also available through your registration number and password.
A Related Benchmark
The closest comparison is the 2021 Punjab Police Sub-Inspector recruitment. It also ranked graduates on a written score out of 800 drawn from two merit papers. Its reported written cut-off for the General category was 577 out of 800 for men and 532 for women. This is a different post, with a different number of vacancies and applicants, so use it only to understand the scale of scores at the top of a graduate-level Punjab Police list, not as the Head Constable cut-off.
What Affects the Cut-off
Number of vacancies: The 2021 advertisement had 787 posts through the written exam. A smaller number of posts in the next cycle would usually push the cut-off up.
Category and women's posts: Each category and the 257 posts reserved for women in the 2021 cycle are filled separately, so each has its own closing score. Small categories such as Wards of Freedom Fighters (8 posts) can behave unpredictably.
Number of applicants: Graduate-level police posts draw large numbers of applicants, which crowds the top of each list.
Paper difficulty: A tough General Awareness or Reasoning section lowers raw scores and, with them, the cut-off.
Normalisation: When the test runs in more than one shift, scores are adjusted using the mean and standard deviation method, so official scores often carry decimals.
Negative marking: With 1 mark lost per wrong answer, overall accuracy across the pool shapes how high the top scores go.
How to Set Your Target Score
Since the shortlisting cut-off is unknown until results are out, aim for a score that leaves a margin rather than one that barely clears the minimum.
Target level | Total out of 800 | Per paper (approx.) | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
Qualifying only | Above 240 | 120+ | Clears the qualifying rule only; not enough for selection |
Competitive | 480 to 560 | 240 to 280 | A reasonable working target for reserved-category candidates |
Strong | 560 and above | 280+ | A comfortable buffer for the General category |
These are preparation targets set by Testkart, not official cut-offs. They are based on the marking scheme and on related Punjab Police results, and they assume that the pattern stays the same in the next notification.
Protect both papers: A high total is wasted if one paper falls below 30% (or 25% for SC, BC, EWS and Ex-Servicemen).
Use Paper 1 as your edge: Ties are broken first by age and then by Paper 1 marks, so a strong General Awareness score helps twice.
Count accuracy, not attempts: Ten careless errors cost 50 marks compared with getting them right, which can be the gap between selection and missing out.
Check against mocks: Count yourself safe only when your full-length scores clear your target consistently, not once.
Official result and cut-off notices are published on the Punjab Police official website.
