RBI Grade A Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Rules

RBI Grade A eligibility is set separately for each post, so the first step is to work out which Grade A post fits your background. In the latest cycle (Panel Year 2026), the Reserve Bank of India invited applications for Assistant Manager (Rajbhasha) and Assistant Manager (Protocol & Security). The first needs a postgraduate degree in Hindi or Hindi translation, and the second needs long commissioned service in the armed forces.

This page explains nationality, qualification, experience, age limit, age relaxation and the common reasons for rejection. All figures are from the official Panel Year 2026 advertisement (Advt. No. RBISB/DA/05/2025-26), where age was counted as on 1 February 2026. RBI sets the reference date again in every notification, so the dates below will change in the next cycle even if the rules stay similar.

Same for both posts

The overall recruitment details, such as fee and dates, are on the RBI Grade A overview page. This page stays focused on who can apply.

Nationality Requirements

The nationality rule is common to both posts. A candidate must be one of the following:

  • Citizen of India.

  • Subject of Nepal or Bhutan.

  • Tibetan refugee: A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of settling permanently.

  • Person of Indian origin: A person of Indian origin who migrated from one of the countries listed in the notification, with the intention of settling in India.

Candidates who are not Indian citizens need a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India. It must be produced before any offer of appointment is made.

Educational Qualification and Experience

Assistant Manager (Rajbhasha)

The notification lists four qualification routes. The first is the most direct one:

  • Option 1: A second-class Master's degree in Hindi or Hindi translation, with English as a subject at the bachelor's degree level.

  • Other options: Other combinations of Master's degrees in Hindi or English, together with a postgraduate diploma in translation, are also accepted. The exact subject combinations are given in the notification, so read the qualification clause carefully before applying.

No work experience is required for this post. Knowledge of bilingual word processing is helpful for the job, but the advertisement does not make it a condition for applying.

Assistant Manager (Protocol & Security)

This post does not state a degree as an essential qualification. Eligibility is based on military service:

  • Service: At least 10 years of commissioned service in the regular Army, Navy or Air Force. For PwBD candidates, 5 years is enough.

  • Identity card: A valid Ex-Serviceman Identity Card.

Candidates who are still serving should check the release terms in the notification and confirm their eligibility with their service authorities before applying. A copy of the Ministry of Defence certificate may be needed if you are shortlisted for the interview.

Age Limit for RBI Grade A

Age is calculated as on the reference date of the notification. For Panel Year 2026, that date was 1 February 2026.

Post

Minimum age

Maximum age

Date of birth must fall between

Assistant Manager (Rajbhasha)

21 years

Under 30 years (32 years for Ph.D. holders)

2 February 1996 and 1 February 2005

Assistant Manager (Protocol & Security)

25 years

Under 40 years

2 February 1986 and 1 February 2001

The Ph.D. concession for Rajbhasha raises the upper limit to 32 years for candidates who hold a Ph.D. The notification does not allow relaxations to be added together, so a Ph.D. holder cannot also claim a category relaxation on top of it.

Age Relaxation

The general age relaxation clause applies to all posts except Assistant Manager (Protocol & Security), which has no relaxation for any category. Relaxation is available only to candidates who can produce the required certificate, and relaxations cannot be combined.

Category

Upper age relaxation

OBC (non-creamy layer)

Up to 3 years

SC and ST (if reserved)

5 years

Ex-servicemen

Up to 5 years, subject to the conditions in the notification

PwBD (General and EWS)

Up to 10 years

PwBD (OBC)

Up to 13 years

PwBD (SC and ST)

Up to 15 years

PwBD relaxation applies only where the post has been identified as suitable for the disability. In Panel Year 2026, one Rajbhasha vacancy was identified for a PwBD candidate. Check the suitability table in the notification before you rely on this relaxation.

How to Check Your Age Eligibility

Do not count years by looking at the calendar year alone. Use the exact reference date and the date-of-birth window in the notification.

  1. Note the reference date: For Panel Year 2026 it was 1 February 2026.

  2. Find the date-of-birth window: For Rajbhasha, you must have been born between 2 February 1996 and 1 February 2005.

  3. Add your relaxation, if any: Take the upper limit for your category and move the earliest date of birth back by the same number of years.

  4. Check the minimum age too: A candidate born after 1 February 2005 is below 21 on the reference date and cannot apply for Rajbhasha.

For example, a General category candidate born on 15 January 1996 had already completed 30 years on 1 February 2026, so that candidate was outside the Rajbhasha limit. A candidate born on 10 March 1996 was inside the limit. With the 3-year OBC relaxation, the working upper limit becomes 33 years, so the earliest date of birth moves back to 2 February 1993. Confirm such figures in the notification, because the printed date-of-birth windows are the official rule.

Reservation and Category Rules

Vacancies are reserved as per Government of India rules, and the category-wise split changes with every advertisement. The Panel Year 2026 split is shown below so you can see how few seats each category had.

To claim a reserved category, your certificate must be in the prescribed format and valid on or before the closing date of the application. The notification explains how a missing or late certificate is treated, so read that clause before choosing your category in the form. Do not read one year's split as a trend, because the numbers change with each advertisement.

Which Post Suits Your Profile

If you are

Consider

Why

A postgraduate in Hindi or Hindi translation, aged under 30 (32 years with a Ph.D.)

Assistant Manager (Rajbhasha)

No experience is needed, and the qualification matches the post directly

A postgraduate with a translation diploma in an allowed subject combination

Assistant Manager (Rajbhasha)

The notification lists such combinations as alternatives

A former commissioned officer with 10 or more years of service, aged 25 to under 40

Assistant Manager (Protocol & Security)

The post is built around commissioned service and an Ex-Serviceman Identity Card

A graduate without a language postgraduation or military service

Neither post in this cycle

The listed qualification routes are not met. Watch for other RBI recruitments with different rules

This table is a quick guide only. The advertisement is the final authority. After you choose your post, the RBI Grade A syllabus shows what to study for it.

Who May Not Be Eligible

Applications are often rejected for simple reasons. Check these before you pay the fee:

  • Age outside the window: Even a few days beyond the limit makes the application invalid.

  • Wrong qualification route: For Rajbhasha, a degree that is not in the listed subject combinations, or one that is not a second-class Master's where required.

  • Short service period: For Protocol & Security, less than 10 years of commissioned service (or 5 years for PwBD candidates), or a missing Ex-Serviceman Identity Card.

  • Late or wrong certificate: Caste, OBC non-creamy layer, EWS or disability certificates must be valid and in hand by the closing date of 26 February 2026 in the last cycle.

  • Creamy layer OBC: OBC relaxation and reservation are meant for non-creamy layer candidates, so check your certificate before claiming them.

  • Employer not informed: Candidates already in government or similar service must confirm in the application that they have informed their employer in writing.

Eligibility is checked again at the interview stage, so a candidate who passes the exam can still be rejected later for an ineligible qualification or age.

Pre-Application Checklist

Run through this list before you start the form. It saves fee and time.

  1. Read the full advertisement, not only a summary.

  2. Confirm your nationality category and keep the Government of India eligibility certificate ready if it applies.

  3. Check that your qualification or service record matches the post exactly.

  4. Calculate your age against the date-of-birth window, including any relaxation.

  5. Make sure your category or disability certificate is valid on the closing date.

  6. Use the same name, date of birth and spelling everywhere, because mismatches create problems at verification.

Documents and Verification

Certificates are not uploaded with the application. They are verified at the interview stage, and the details must match your application exactly.

Eligibility for the 2027 Recruitment

RBI's recruitment calendar for 2027 lists the Assistant Manager posts for around February 2027 and an Officers in Grade A (DR) - General recruitment for around July 2027. These months are tentative, and eligibility for any new post will be known only from its advertisement. Do not assume the Panel Year 2026 age limits, qualification or reference date will repeat.

The simplest way to stay ready is to keep your documents in order and track the official pages: https://www.rbi.org.in/ and https://opportunities.rbi.org.in/scripts/index.aspx
