RPSC 1st Grade exam pattern
The written exam has two objective papers. Each question carries 2 marks, and both papers are counted for merit.
Paper | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Paper I: General Awareness and General Studies | 75 | 150 | 1 hour 30 minutes |
Paper II: Concerned subject | 150 | 300 | 3 hours |
Total | 225 | 450 | 4 hours 30 minutes |
One-third of the marks of a question is deducted for each wrong answer. Candidates need at least 40% in each paper to be considered, with relaxation for SC and ST as per rules. Physical Education and Coach posts follow a modified scheme, so check the advertisement for those posts.
What this means for you
Paper II decides the merit: it carries two-thirds of the total, so most of your study hours belong there.
A wrong guess costs about 0.67 marks: attempt only when you can eliminate at least two options.
Paper I is short but scoring: history and educational management alone carry 60 of its 150 marks.
Older pages may still show question counts or durations from earlier cycles, so follow the latest notification. See the RPSC 1st Grade exam pattern for section-wise detail.

RPSC publishes a separate syllabus PDF for Paper I and for each subject. The full topic list is on the RPSC 1st Grade syllabus page.
Selection process
Written exam: Paper I and Paper II, each with a 40% minimum (relaxed for SC and ST as per rules).
Provisional result: RPSC releases a subject-wise list of candidates provisionally eligible for document checking, with category-wise cut-off marks.
Detailed application form and document verification: shortlisted candidates submit a detailed form and original documents.
Final merit and allotment: the subject-wise merit list goes to the School Education Department, which handles posting.
Coach posts can earn additional marks for sports achievements as defined in the advertisement. There is no interview for School Lecturer posts in the current scheme.
Salary and career growth
RPSC 1st Grade lecturers are placed in Pay Matrix Level L-12 of the Rajasthan pay structure, which corresponds to the earlier Grade Pay of Rs. 4,800. During probation, newly appointed employees in Rajasthan receive fixed remuneration as per state rules, and the full pay level applies after probation. Allowances such as DA and HRA are added on top of basic pay.
With experience and departmental promotion, lecturers can move to roles such as Vice Principal and Principal. In-hand pay varies with posting city and deductions, so treat any single in-hand figure you see as an estimate, not an official number.
How to prepare for RPSC 1st Grade
Start with Paper II: map your subject syllabus into senior secondary, graduation and postgraduate parts and finish the senior secondary and graduation content first, since they carry most of the marks.
Do not skip pedagogy: educational psychology and teaching methods form a fixed block of Paper II and reward short, regular revision.
Build Rajasthan GK steadily: spend 45 minutes a day on Rajasthan history, geography and culture for Paper I.
Practise under time: Paper I gives 90 minutes for 75 questions, so speed matters as much as knowledge.
Cut-off reference
RPSC releases cut-off marks subject-wise and category-wise, out of 450. For the 2025 cycle, provisional lists in August 2026 showed General category cut-offs such as 188.97 in Hindi, 193.18 in English and 228.73 in History, with many reserved categories marked as all qualified candidates included. These figures are indicative and should be checked against the official result PDFs.
Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat last year's figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them rather than a bare pass. Earlier years are compared on the RPSC 1st Grade cut-off page.
