RPSC RAS Exam Pattern 2026

The exam has three stages. Only Mains and Interview marks count for the final merit.

Preliminary Exam

Paper

Questions

Marks

Time

General Knowledge and General Science (objective)

150

200

3 hours

One-third of the marks for a question is deducted for each wrong answer. The Prelims is only a screening test. RPSC calls about 15 times the number of vacancies, category-wise, to the Mains.

Mains Exam

Paper

Marks

Paper I

General Studies I (History, Economics, Sociology, Management, Accounting and Auditing)

200

Paper II

General Studies II (Administrative Ethics, Science and Technology, Earth Science)

Paper III

General Studies III (Polity and Current Affairs, Public Administration, Behaviour and Law)

200

Paper IV

General Hindi and General English

200

3 hours

Total

-

800

12 hours

Under the revised scheme, the Mains has only 5-mark (about 50 words) and 10-mark (about 150 words) questions. The old 2-mark questions are gone. Paper IV now has a Hindi unit, an English unit and one 40-mark essay that you write in either language.

Interview

The interview carries 100 marks. It assesses personality, general awareness, administrative aptitude and knowledge of Rajasthani culture.

What This Means for You

  • Prelims is about clearing, not scoring high: Aim for a safe margin above recent cut-offs, but spend most of your writing practice on the Mains.

  • Negative marking punishes guesswork: Three wrong answers cancel one correct answer, so attempt only when you can eliminate options.

  • Mains rewards structure: With many 50-word answers, crisp points and Rajasthan-specific examples matter more than long essays.

Older pages may still show the earlier Mains pattern with 2-mark questions. Follow the January 2026 revised scheme.

RPSC RAS Salary and Posts

Pay depends on the service you are allotted. State Services such as RAS and RPS sit at a higher pay level than subordinate services such as Tehsildar.

Subordinate Services

The pay levels above are indicative and come from recent notifications and pay rules. During the probation period, Rajasthan pays a fixed monthly remuneration that is lower than the full pay. In-hand salary also varies with DA, HRA and posting city, so this is not an official figure.

How to Prepare for RPSC RAS

With the Prelims in December 2026 and the Mains planned for May 2027, a two-track plan works well: secure the Prelims now while building answer-writing habits for the Mains.

Prelims Strategy

  • Start with Rajasthan: Rajasthan history, art, culture, geography and polity form a large share of the paper. Revise them first.

  • Follow current affairs with a state focus: Track Rajasthan schemes, budget announcements and appointments, and make short monthly notes.

  • Practise reasoning weekly: A few sets each week keep speed and accuracy steady in this scoring area.

Mains Strategy

  • Write daily: Practise five to eight 50-word answers and two 150-word answers on rotating units.

  • Cover the new areas: Sociology, management, accounting and auditing, and behaviour and law need focused notes because they carry fixed marks.

  • Prepare Paper IV early: Precis, translation and official drafting improve only with repeated practice.

Mock Tests and Practice

RPSC does not publish official mock tests for the RAS exam. It does release previous papers and answer keys, which you can find through the RPSC official website. Solve these first to understand the real difficulty level.

RPSC RAS Cut-off Reference

The table shows recent Prelims cut-offs for the Non-TSP area, General male category, out of 200. These figures are indicative and compiled from RPSC result notices as reported by reference sources.

Exam year

Prelims cut-off (General, male, Non-TSP)

RAS 2024

71.59

RAS 2023

100.69

RAS 2021

Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Treat these figures as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin above them.
