Railway Exams

RRB ALP Eligibility Criteria 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Medical Standard

RRB ALP eligibility is stricter than most railway exams because the Assistant Loco Pilot works on the footplate of running trains. Along with the usual age and education rules, every candidate must meet the A-1 medical standard, which includes unaided 6/6 vision. A candidate who clears every written test but fails the medical cannot be given any other railway post under this notification.

This guide follows the detailed CEN No. 01/2026 notification for 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot posts. Two dates matter most: your qualification must be complete by 14 June 2026 (the closing date for applications), and your age is counted as on 1 July 2026. The application window has closed, so use this page to confirm your standing before CBT 1 and to plan for the next cycle.

Educational Qualification

The notification accepts three routes. You need only one of them, and every route starts with Matriculation or SSLC (Class 10) from a recognised board.

Route 1: Class 10 plus ITI or Act Apprenticeship

You must hold an ITI from an institute recognised by NCVT or SCVT, or a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship, in one of these 15 trades:

Electrical and electronics trades

Mechanical and automobile trades

Electrician

Fitter

Wireman

Turner

Instrument Mechanic

Machinist

Armature and Coil Winder

Millwright/Maintenance Mechanic

Electronics Mechanic

Mechanic (Diesel)

Mechanic (Radio and TV)

Mechanic (Motor Vehicle)

Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Mechanic

Heat Engine

Trades outside this list, such as Welder, COPA, Draughtsman or Plumber, do not qualify on the ITI route. Candidates with those trades can still apply only if they also hold an eligible diploma or degree.

Route 2: Class 10 plus engineering diploma

A three-year diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering, or a combination of streams of these disciplines, from a recognised institution is accepted in place of ITI.

Route 3: Engineering degree

A degree in the same four disciplines, or a combination of their streams, is accepted in place of the diploma. Degrees in branches such as Civil, Computer Science or Chemical Engineering are not listed.

Qualification deadline and certificates

  • Complete before the closing date: Your qualification had to be finished by 14 June 2026. Candidates waiting for final results were not eligible to apply.

  • Date of issue matters: Certificates should show the date of issue. If a certificate was issued after the closing date, bring a consolidated mark sheet or semester mark sheets showing the result declaration date, or a letter from the institute confirming it.

  • Your qualification sets your Part B trade: ITI candidates take CBT 2 Part B in their own trade. Diploma and degree holders choose a trade linked to their branch. The mapping is explained on the RRB ALP exam pattern page.

The notification does not prescribe a minimum percentage in Class 10, ITI, diploma or degree. Passing the qualification is enough.

Age Limit and Date of Birth

The age limit for RRB ALP 2026 is 18 to 30 years as on 1 July 2026. Your date of birth must fall within the window for your category, with both dates included.

Up to 35 years (UR and EWS), 38 years (OBC-NCL), 40 years (SC and ST)

Three rules that decide your relaxation

  • Not cumulative: If you qualify on more than one ground, you get the highest single relaxation, not the total of all of them.

  • No relaxation against UR posts: SC, ST and OBC (NCL) candidates who compete for unreserved vacancies do not get any age relaxation.

  • Certificates must be valid on 14 June 2026: Category status as on the closing date is what counts. A change after that date is not accepted.

Some pages list a 10-year PwBD relaxation or a relaxation for Jammu and Kashmir domicile for this post. Neither appears in the CEN 01/2026 relaxation table for ALP.

Medical Standard A-1

A-1 is the strictest medical category in railway recruitment. Check it honestly before you invest months in preparation, because no alternative post is offered if you fail it.

Medical self-screening in CEN 01/2026

  • At the application stage: Candidates answered a self-screening questionnaire on vision, hearing, speech, mental fitness, conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, and substance use.

  • On CBAT day: You must bring the downloaded Self Screening Medical Declaration Reports (Part A signed by a General Physician and Part B signed by an Eye Specialist). They are accepted only from a Central or State Government hospital or a medical college. Without them, you are not allowed to sit the CBAT.

  • Final medical: These declarations are provisional. The final decision comes from the Railway medical examination after document verification, with one chance to file a medical appeal on payment of charges.

Ex-servicemen are assessed under different medical standards set out in Para 534 of the Indian Railway Medical Manual, available on indianrailways.gov.in.

Nationality

A candidate must be one of the following:

  • A citizen of India.

  • A citizen of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan.

  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 intending to settle permanently.

  • A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam to settle permanently in India.

Everyone except Indian citizens needs a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India. Such candidates can take the exams provisionally, but must produce the certificate at document verification.

Is RRB ALP Open to PwBD Candidates?

No. Annexure A of CEN 01/2026 marks the Assistant Loco Pilot post as not suitable for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities, because of the A-1 medical standard. There is no PwBD reservation, fee concession or age relaxation for this post, even though some websites copy these rows from other railway notifications.

Other Conditions to Know

  • One RRB, one application: You can apply to only one RRB and choose zone preferences within it. Multiple applications, even to the same RRB, lead to rejection of all of them and debarment from future RRB and RRC exams.

  • Government employees: Candidates working in any government department, PSU or autonomous body may apply after informing their employer, but must produce a No Objection Certificate at document verification.

  • Debarred or dismissed candidates: Anyone currently debarred by an RRB or RRC, or dismissed from government service, is not eligible.

  • Number of attempts: The notification sets no limit on attempts. Your age limit is the only cap.

  • Ex-servicemen: Serving defence personnel due for release within one year of the closing date could apply against ex-servicemen vacancies. Those who already secured a civil job using the ex-servicemen quota get age relaxation only, not reservation.
