Railway Recruitment Board ASM

RRB ASM is a recruitment exam conducted by Railway Recruitment Board, relevant to candidates preparing for Indian Railways recruitment.

RRB ASM is the common search name for the Station Master post in Indian Railways, recruited by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Railway Board. The post sits in the graduate-level non-technical (NTPC) stream and is one of the most searched railway jobs because of its Level 6 pay and its operational role at stations. In official documents the post is called Station Master, so you will see both names in this guide.

The important point for the 2026 cycle is that the NTPC Graduate notification, CEN 06/2026, does not include Station Master. A separate recruitment for the post has been reported, with a different selection process. This page explains what is confirmed, what is only reported, and how to prepare without waiting for the notification.

Latest status of the recruitment

CEN 06/2026 was released for NTPC Graduate posts with 3,548 vacancies across four posts: Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Goods Train Manager, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist and Senior Clerk cum Typist. Applications for those posts opened on 8 October 2026 and close on 6 November 2026. Station Master and Traffic Assistant are not in that list.

Educational websites report that a Railway Board letter dated 7 October 2026 lays down guidelines for a separate Station Master recruitment. They also say the notification is expected soon. At the time of writing, we could not find a released CEN for Station Master on the official RRB sites, so every detail below that is marked as reported is provisional.

The previous cycle, CEN 06/2025, did include Station Master along with Traffic Assistant, and it used a computer based aptitude test (CBAT) at the last stage. Third-party summaries put the Station Master vacancies in that cycle at 615. Treat this as a reference point, not as a promise for 2026.

Vacancies

No official vacancy count exists yet. The 500+ figure being quoted is attributed to recruitment sources, and other sites quote higher numbers, so do not treat any of them as final. RRB-wise and category-wise vacancies will be published in the CEN, and candidates can apply to only one RRB, so the RRB-wise table matters when you choose.

Eligibility

Educational qualification

Reports say a degree from a recognised university in any stream is enough. The cut-off date for obtaining the degree will be fixed in the CEN, so do not assume it matches the NTPC graduate cycle.

Age limit

Reports disagree. Some say 20 to 30 years and others say 20 to 33 years including a relaxation, with category-wise relaxation to follow in the CEN. Wait for the official reference date and limits before deciding whether you qualify.

Other conditions

Reported medical standard is A-2, which is a stricter vision standard than for clerical posts. Check the standards on the official notification before you apply.

Exam pattern and selection process

Earlier cycles used two computer based tests (CBT 1 and CBT 2) followed by CBAT. For the new process, reports describe a single-stage CBT followed by CBAT, document verification and medical examination.

The reported duration is 120 minutes. Reports also say CBAT will be given to candidates shortlisted at about eight times the vacancies, with final merit at 70 percent CBT and 30 percent CBAT. Negative marking for this CBT has not been confirmed in the sources we reviewed. Older pages may still show the two-stage CBT pattern, so follow the official notification.

Syllabus summary

The railway board has not published a topic-wise syllabus that we could verify. The table below is a working checklist built from the reported sections and from the topics asked in earlier NTPC graduate papers.

Area

Important topics

Maths and data

Number system, percentage, ratio, time and work, speed and distance, algebra, geometry, tables and graphs

Basic science

Units and measurement, work, power, energy, heat, basic electricity, simple machines

Logical capability

Syllogism, blood relations, clocks and calendars, puzzles, assumptions

Mental reasoning

Analogy, series, coding-decoding, ranking, arrangement

Salary and career growth

Station Master is reported as a Pay Level 6 post with initial basic pay of Rs. 35,400 under the 7th Pay Commission. Allowances such as dearness allowance and house rent allowance are added on top, and the in-hand amount varies by city and posting. Do not rely on any single in-hand figure you see online. Promotion usually follows departmental rules, so check the railway rules for the current ladder.

How to prepare

The wait for the notification is useful time because the reported pattern leans on Science, Maths and reasoning rather than general awareness. Start with these steps.

  • Build maths speed: Practise arithmetic and data questions under a timer, because the reported maths and science section carries 60 marks.

  • Revise class 9 and 10 science: Focus on physics concepts such as motion, work and energy, heat and electricity.

  • Practise reasoning daily: Logical and mental reasoning make up 40 marks together.

  • Prepare for CBAT early: It tests attention, spatial and information skills, which improve with regular practice.

For timed practice, you can attempt RRB ASM mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to decide where to spend revision time. Pair them with previous NTPC graduate papers, and use the RRB ASM study notes for quick revision.

Cut-off reference

No cut-off exists for the new process. Cut-offs from the earlier two-stage cycles are a rough benchmark only, because the pattern is different now. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants, so aim for a clear margin above past figures.

Always confirm information on the official sites: rrb.indianrailways.gov.in and rrbapply.gov.in.
