Railway Recruitment Board JE CE

RRB JE CE is a recruitment exam conducted by Railway Recruitment Board for the recruitment of Junior Engineers, relevant to candidates preparing for Indian Railways recruitment.

RRB JE CE Study Material

RRB JE CE is the Civil Engineering discipline of the Junior Engineer recruitment run by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Ministry of Railways. Civil candidates compete for Junior Engineer posts that deal with track, bridges, buildings, surveying and maintenance of railway infrastructure. The current cycle is advertised under Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) 04/2026, which also covers Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) and Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant (CMA) posts.

This page is the civil-specific guide to the cycle: key dates, eligibility, the two-stage computer based test, the technical syllabus, selection steps, pay and a practical preparation plan. Year-specific details are kept in labelled tables so you can tell them apart from rules that stay the same across cycles. Where official sources could not be confirmed, the page says so.

Notification and vacancies

The indicative notice came first, and the detailed CEN 04/2026 followed in August 2026. Reports put the total at 4,029 posts after a corrigendum added a few vacancies to the original 3,993. Civil is widely reported as the largest single discipline, but the discipline-wise number is not the same in every report, so this page does not quote one. Check the vacancy table in the official notification for the civil count of your RRB.

Vacancies are advertised RRB-wise and category-wise. A civil seat in one RRB can have a very different competition level from another, so compare RRBs before you finalise your preference.

Eligibility for civil candidates

Educational qualification

For Junior Engineer posts, you need a three-year diploma in engineering or a B.E./B.Tech from a recognised institute in the branch relevant to the post. For RRB JE CE that means Civil Engineering or the civil branches the notification accepts. The notification annexure lists accepted branch names, so match your certificate to that list before applying. Candidates awaiting final results by the closing date are not eligible.

Age limit

The general age range is 18 to 33 years. The reference date for counting age is given in the notification; reports differ on it, so read it directly in the official document.

OBC (non-creamy layer)

  1. Register on the application portal of the RRB you choose.

  2. Fill personal, educational and category details exactly as in your certificates.

  3. Upload the photograph, signature and documents in the specified size.

  4. Pay the fee online and save the final confirmation.

Common causes of rejection include a mismatch between name or date of birth and certificates, a non-eligible branch name, and wrong category claims.

Exam pattern

Selection for RRB JE CE rests on two computer based tests. Both are objective, with one mark per question and a deduction of one-third mark for each wrong answer. Unattempted questions carry no penalty.

CBT 1 has Mathematics (30), General Intelligence and Reasoning (25), General Awareness (15) and General Science (30). CBT 2 has General Awareness (15), Physics and Chemistry (15), Basics of Computers (10), Basics of Environment and Pollution Control (10) and Technical Abilities (100). For civil candidates, the 100-mark technical block is where the final merit is decided.

Syllabus summary

The notification names the sections but, as far as could be confirmed here, does not give a topic-wise list on its public summary. The table below is a working checklist built from the civil diploma curriculum and recurring question areas.

Selection process

  1. CBT 1: a screening test. Candidates who meet the qualifying percentage are considered for CBT 2, usually up to about 15 times the community-wise vacancies.

  2. CBT 2: decides merit for the technical post.

  3. Document verification: originals are checked against your application.

  4. Medical examination: as per the medical standard for the post.

Reported minimum qualifying percentages are 40 percent for UR and EWS, 30 percent for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25 percent for ST. Treat these as indicative until you confirm them in the notification.

Salary and career growth

Junior Engineer posts sit at Pay Level 6 of the Seventh Pay Commission matrix, with an initial basic pay of Rs. 35,400 and a scale that rises to Rs. 1,12,400, plus dearness, house rent and travel allowances. In-hand pay depends on the city and allowances, and any estimate other than the pay level is not official. Civil JEs typically work in the engineering department on track, bridges and works, and can move up through departmental promotions and examinations.

How to prepare for RRB JE CE

Plan by stage

  • Start with the technical core: 100 of 150 marks in CBT 2 come from civil subjects, so begin with building materials, surveying, strength of materials and soil mechanics.

  • Keep CBT 1 warm: practise maths and reasoning daily, because CBT 1 decides whether your technical paper is even checked.

  • Revise basics of science: physics and chemistry in CBT 2 are class 10 to 12 level, and easy marks if revised.

Use mock tests well

Take sectional tests first, then full-length papers in the exact CBT 1 and CBT 2 format. After every test, list the wrong answers, the slow questions and the skipped but solvable ones. For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt RRB JE CE online mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to plan revision. Pair them with previous year papers to understand real difficulty, and keep short formula notes from the civil engineering study notes.

Cut-off reference

Cut-offs change with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants, so treat last cycle's figures as a benchmark only.
