RRB JE EC Exam Pattern 2026: CBT 1 and CBT 2

The RRB JE EC exam pattern follows the common Junior Engineer structure: two computer-based tests, then document verification and a medical examination. What changes for Electronics and Communication candidates is the 100-mark Technical Abilities section in CBT 2. This page covers CEN 04/2026.

It explains marks, timing, qualifying percentages and what the numbers mean for your time use, so you can plan before you open the first mock test.

These percentages may be relaxed for PwBD candidates if there is a shortfall against PwBD vacancies, as stated in the notification. Clearing them only makes you eligible. Shortlisting for CBT 2 is by rank, so the real cut-off is usually much higher.

The paper is bilingual in the languages specified in the notification. Candidates with a PwBD certificate who are eligible for a scribe generally get extra time as set out in the official notification, so confirm the exact provision for your category.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

  • Correct answer: 1 mark.

  • Wrong answer: one-third of a mark is deducted, in both CBT 1 and CBT 2.

  • Unattempted question: no marks and no deduction.

Three wrong answers cancel one correct answer, so a guess is worth taking only when you can remove at least one option confidently.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • Technical Abilities is two-thirds of CBT 2. One mark per question means every technical question is worth the same as a general awareness question, but you have 100 of them, so depth in your branch pays most.

  • CBT 1 is a gate, not a score builder. Its marks do not count in final merit, so aim to clear it with a safe margin rather than over-invest.

  • Common sections are quick marks. The 50 non-technical questions in CBT 2 can be solved faster than technical ones if you have revised short notes.

  • Calculation tools: an on-screen calculator is generally provided in CBT 2. Practise with a similar interface in mocks.

Normalisation and Final Merit

The exam runs in several shifts with different question sets. RRBs convert raw scores into normalised scores so shifts of different difficulty can be compared, and merit lists use the normalised score. Final merit comes from CBT 2 only, subject to document verification and medical fitness. Your post preference order also matters in allotment, so fill it carefully.

Later Stages

Document verification checks educational, category and identity documents. The medical examination confirms fitness as per the standard of the post. Reservation benefits claimed at the application stage continue through all stages.

Time Management

  1. CBT 1: spend about 25 to 30 minutes on Mathematics, 20 on Reasoning, 10 on General Awareness and 25 on General Science, leaving a few minutes to review.

  2. CBT 2: clear the 50 common questions in roughly 30 to 35 minutes, and keep about 80 minutes for the 100 technical questions.

  3. Skip and return: mark long numerical questions for review rather than losing minutes on them.

These splits are suggestions; adjust them after a few full-length attempts. Older pages may still show a different pattern, so follow the official notification on the RRB website.
