RRB JE EC Syllabus 2026: CBT 1 and CBT 2 Technical Topics

The RRB JE EC syllabus has two layers. CBT 1 tests general subjects that every Junior Engineer applicant faces, while CBT 2 adds common sections and a 100-mark Technical Abilities paper based on Electronics and Communication. This page lists what to study in each stage for CEN 04/2026 and where to begin.

The RRBs name the test sections in the notification but do not publish a detailed topic-wise syllabus for the technical paper. The topic lists below are built from the official notification, the Electronics and Communication diploma and degree curriculum, and questions asked in earlier cycles. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list.

Key Changes to Know

  • Two stages only: CBT 1 is a qualifier and CBT 2 decides merit. Older pages may still show a different stage count, so follow the official notification.

  • Technical paper is discipline-based: the 100 marks of Technical Abilities come from your own branch, not from a common engineering paper.

  • Topic lists differ across websites: some include extra subjects such as network theory or control systems. Prioritise the core list below first, then widen with previous-year questions.

CBT 1 Syllabus

Section

Topics to cover

Start with

Mathematics

Number system, BODMAS, decimals and fractions, percentage, ratio and proportion, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, mensuration, statistics

Percentage, ratio and time-work, which feed many other topics

General Intelligence and Reasoning

Analogies, number and alphabet series, coding-decoding, relationships, syllogism, Venn diagrams, direction sense, classification, data sufficiency, non-verbal reasoning

Series and coding-decoding

General Awareness

Current affairs, science and technology, sports, culture, Indian polity and economy, environmental issues

The last six months of current affairs

General Science

Physics, chemistry and life science up to Class 10 level

Class 9 and 10 science textbooks

Mathematics and General Science carry 60 of the 100 marks, so they deserve the largest share of your CBT 1 time.

CBT 2 Common Sections

General Awareness and Physics and Chemistry

General Awareness repeats the CBT 1 areas with more weight on current events. Physics and Chemistry is based on higher-secondary concepts: units, motion, heat, waves, optics, electricity and magnetism in physics, and atomic structure, bonding, the periodic table and reactions in chemistry.

Basics of Computers and Applications

Computer fundamentals, hardware and software, operating systems, MS Office, internet and networking basics, and common computer terms.

Basics of Environment and Pollution Control

Ecosystems, air, water, soil and noise pollution, waste management, global warming, ozone depletion and pollution-control measures.

CBT 2 Technical Abilities for Electronics and Communication

Technical Abilities is worth 100 marks, so it is the section to prepare most deeply. The table groups the topics most often followed for this discipline.

Subject area

Topics to cover

Start with

Electronic components and materials

Conductors, semiconductors, insulators, magnetic materials, cables and optical fibre jointing, cells and batteries, relays, switches, MCBs, connectors

Gates and Boolean algebra

Linear integrated circuits

Operational amplifiers and their applications, voltage regulators, timers, phase-locked loops

Op-amp configurations

Microprocessors and microcontrollers

8085 architecture, instruction set, assembly programming, peripherals, microcontroller basics

8085 architecture

Electronic measurements

Measurement principles, range extension, CRO, LED and LCD panels, transducers

CRO and transducers

Communication engineering

Modulation, multiplexing, wave propagation, transmission lines, optical fibre, public address, exchanges, radar, cellular and satellite communication

How to Cover the Syllabus

  1. Weeks 1 to 6: complete core technical subjects (devices, digital electronics, communication) and CBT 1 arithmetic.

  2. Weeks 4 to 8: add reasoning practice, Class 9 to 12 science and 30 minutes of current affairs every day.

  3. Weeks 7 to 10: cover the remaining technical areas, computers and environment, and start topic-wise tests.

  4. Final phase: take full-length tests, analyse them the same day and revise your error log.

The official notification on the RRB website remains the final reference.
