RRB JE Syllabus 2026: CBT 1 and CBT 2 Subject-Wise Topics

Most RRB JE aspirants start preparation by asking "what topics should I actually study?" and end up with five different tabs open. This guide breaks down the RRB JE Syllabus 2026 by subject and question count, so you know exactly where to put your study hours before you open a single textbook.

The RRB JE syllabus is split across two stages: CBT-1, a common screening test for all engineering branches, and CBT-2, which includes a branch-specific Technical Abilities section that decides your final rank. Understanding both and how they differ is the first real step in building a study plan.

RRB JE Syllabus 2026: Stage-Wise Structure

Stage

Subjects

Questions

Duration

CBT-1

Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, General Science

100

90 minutes

CBT-2

General Awareness, Physics & Chemistry, Basics of Computers & Applications, Basics of Environment & Pollution Control, Technical Abilities

150

120 minutes

Both stages carry negative marking of one-third mark per wrong answer. CBT-1 is qualifying only its marks don't count toward your final merit, but you still need to clear the minimum qualifying percentage for your category to reach CBT-2.

RRB JE CBT-1 Syllabus (Subject-Wise Topics)

CBT-1's four subjects are commonly reported with an approximate question split of Mathematics (30), General Intelligence & Reasoning (25), General Awareness (15), and General Science (30). Treat this split as indicative the official CEN notification is the final word on exact weightage but it's a useful guide for where to concentrate revision.

1. Mathematics (~30 questions)

  • Number systems, BODMAS, decimals, fractions

  • LCM and HCF

  • Ratio and proportion, percentages

  • Mensuration (area, volume, surface area)

  • Time and work, time and distance

  • Simple and compound interest

  • Profit and loss

  • Algebra and basic trigonometry

  • Elementary statistics and data interpretation

  • Square roots, age calculations, calendar and clock problems

Most of this maps to Class 10–12 level mathematics, so if you've studied engineering at diploma or degree level, this is largely revision rather than new learning.

2. General Intelligence and Reasoning (~25 questions)

  • Analogies and classification

  • Alphabetical and number series

  • Coding-decoding

  • Mathematical operations and relationships

  • Syllogism and Venn diagrams

  • Data sufficiency and interpretation

  • Similarities and differences

  • Analytical reasoning and directions

  • Statement-arguments and assumptions

  • Blood relations and seating arrangement

This section rewards practice more than theory the topic list rarely changes, but speed comes only from solving a high volume of varied questions.

3. General Awareness (~15 questions)

  • Current affairs (national and international)

  • Indian geography, history, and culture

  • Indian polity and economy

  • Science and technology in the news

  • Sports, awards, and important government schemes

With the lowest question count of the four CBT-1 subjects, General Awareness rewards consistent daily reading far more than last-minute cramming a few minutes a day over months outperforms a weekend of revision.

4. General Science (~30 questions)

  • Physics: units and measurement, force and motion, work, energy and power, light, sound

  • Chemistry: atomic structure, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, periodic table

  • Life Sciences: human body systems, plant and animal kingdom basics

This section is set broadly at the Class 10 level, so NCERT-level science notes are usually sufficient preparation you don't need branch-specific technical depth here.

RRB JE CBT-2 Syllabus (Subject-Wise Topics)

CBT-2 repeats some CBT-1 themes at a slightly more advanced level and adds the branch-specific Technical Abilities section, which alone accounts for the largest share of the 150 marks on offer.

How to Use This Syllabus for a Study Plan

Start technical revision early, not after CBT-1.
Since Technical Abilities is the single biggest scoring section across both stages, candidates who wait until after CBT-1 to start this revision are giving themselves a shorter runway for the section that matters most to their final rank.

Weight your CBT-1 revision by question count, not by subject order.
Mathematics and General Science each carry roughly double the questions of General Awareness plan your practice time accordingly rather than splitting it evenly across four subjects.

Treat reasoning as a practice subject, not a reading subject.
The topic list for General Intelligence & Reasoning is short and stable; what improves your score is repeated timed practice, not re-reading theory.

Use your own engineering syllabus as a first-pass technical resource.
Your diploma or degree coursework in subjects like Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, or Electrical Machines already covers a large share of what CBT-2's Technical Abilities section tests.

Practise full-length CBT-1 and CBT-2 pattern tests regularly.
Reading a topic list tells you what to study; a mock test tells you whether you've actually learned it under real exam conditions, including negative marking. You can attempt RRB JE mock tests on Testkart built to this CBT-1 and CBT-2 syllabus split, with branch-wise Technical Abilities practice and section-wise performance reports to show exactly where your revision is paying off.

For Educators Teaching RRB JE Aspirants

If you teach RRB JE batches, the branch-wise nature of the Technical Abilities syllabus is usually the hardest part to manage at scale Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical aspirants all need different question banks even though they share the same CBT-1 syllabus. Educators can build and assign branch-specific test series on Testkart, track how each student is performing subject-wise, and share revision notes without maintaining separate systems for each discipline.
