Tech Mahindra Exam Pattern 2026: Rounds and Sections for Freshers
The Tech Mahindra exam pattern for freshers is a multi-stage process: an online assessment, a written task, a technical interview and an HR interview. The online assessment is where most candidates are eliminated, so its section structure and timing matter most.
Tech Mahindra does not publish a fresher test pattern on its public careers pages, and candidate reports describe two formats that do not match. This page sets both side by side, labels them as reported, and shows how to prepare for either. Your drive invite is the final word on sections, counts and time.
Table of Contents
Pattern at a glance
Stage | Format | Duration (reported) | Counted for shortlisting |
|---|---|---|---|
Online assessment | Proctored, sectional-timed MCQs plus coding | Varies by format | Yes, sectional elimination |
Story or essay writing | One written task | 15 to 25 minutes | Yes |
Technical interview | One-on-one or panel | 15 to 45 minutes | Yes |
HR interview | Conversation | 15 to 30 minutes | Yes |
Coding challenge | 2 problems, invitation only | 90 minutes | Linked to a higher pay track |
Format 1: round-wise sectional test
This format is reported by one candidate-preparation tracker as the 2026 process. Each section has its own timer, and you cannot go back to an earlier question.
Round 1: online aptitude test
Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
Logical reasoning | 12 MCQs | 15 minutes |
Quantitative aptitude | 12 MCQs | 15 minutes |
Verbal ability (some campus drives only) | 10 to 12 MCQs | 15 minutes |
Essay or story writing | 1 task, 200 to 400 words | 15 to 25 minutes |
Round 2: technical and psychometric test
Section | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|
Psychometric | 72 questions, no right or wrong answers | 15 minutes |
Computer programming | 12 MCQs | 15 minutes |
Computer science | 12 MCQs | 15 minutes |
Automata fix coding | 2 problems, about 70 per cent of the code pre-written | 45 minutes |
Round 3: AI-based communication assessment
This round is reported to test spoken English through read-aloud passages, listen-and-repeat tasks and a topic narration of about 45 seconds. Reported duration is 20 to 30 minutes, and it acts as an elimination stage.
Format 2: ELQ-style test
Another tracker describes an Entry Level Qualification (ELQ) test, taken in one remote-proctored session, as the first elimination gate in 2026 fresher hiring.
Section | Questions | Time | Eliminates? |
|---|---|---|---|
Aptitude | 75 | 142 minutes | Yes |
Technical | 25 MCQs and 1 coding problem | 65 minutes | Yes |
Communication | About 18 | About 20 minutes | Yes |
Psychometric | Not stated | Untimed | No |
In this format each elimination section has its own cut-off, so clearing two of three sections does not move you forward. Candidates who clear it are reported to move to the story writing task, followed by the interviews.
Marking scheme and negative marking
Reports conflict on negative marking, so do not assume either way. The ELQ-style report says aptitude and communication carry no negative marking and that the coding problem gives partial credit per test case passed with no penalty. The round-wise report says negative marking was confirmed in 2024 and 2025 drives for aptitude sections, without stating the penalty.
Other trackers report different totals again, for example 75 questions in 50 minutes with no negative marking. This is why the instructions screen before your test matters. Read it fully before you start, and decide your guessing strategy only after you know the rule.
Older pages may still show a different pattern, so follow the official drive communication.
What the pattern means for you
Every section can eliminate you: a strong coding score does not offset weak aptitude. Aim for balanced accuracy.
Sectional timers punish slow starts: in the round-wise format you get about 75 seconds per aptitude question, so skip anything that needs more than two minutes.
No going back: answer, move on and do not leave easy questions for later.
The psychometric section is about consistency: answer honestly and consistently, because reports say the system checks for inconsistent answers.
Communication is a separate gate: English accuracy and spoken fluency cannot be fixed in the last week, so practise throughout.
Interviews and later stages
The technical interview is reported at 15 to 45 minutes and covers projects, OOP, SQL, data structures and fundamentals. The HR interview is reported at 15 to 30 minutes. Selected candidates are then reported to join an entry-level training programme. Pay is discussed on the Tech Mahindra fresher hiring overview.
Time management
Decide a time budget per question before the test and keep to it. In the first minutes of each section, settle in with the questions you find easiest so nerves do not cost you marks you could have had.
The best way to get used to sectional timers is to practise under them. You can attempt timed sectional tests on Testkart and compare your time per question against the budgets above. After each attempt, review wrong answers and slow questions, and note them in an error log.
Verify the live process on the Tech Mahindra careers portal or with your placement cell before your drive. For more preparation material, educators publish tests, courses and notes on Testkart, and this exam's pages show what is currently available.
