State Government Recruitment

TNPSC Eligibility 2026: Age Limit and Qualification by Group

TNPSC eligibility depends on which exam you are applying for. The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission sets the age limit, qualification and special conditions post by post in each notification, so a Group 4 Junior Assistant applicant and a Group 1 Deputy Collector applicant face very different rules. What stays the same across exams is the structure: Indian citizenship, a minimum qualification held by the notification date, an age window counted as on 1 July of the recruitment year, and adequate knowledge of Tamil.

This page compares the eligibility rules for Group 1, Group 2 and 2A, and Group 4 side by side, based on the 2026 notifications. It explains how TNPSC's community-based age rules work, which concessions apply, and the conditions that most often lead to rejection at certificate verification.

These are summaries for the most common posts. Several posts in every notification have their own limits, so always check the post-wise table for the post code you are applying for.

Nationality and Domicile

Candidates must be citizens of India. You do not need to live in Tamil Nadu to apply for a TNPSC post, but domicile changes how you are treated.

  • Tamil Nadu communities: If you belong to a community notified as reserved in Tamil Nadu and hold a community certificate issued by the competent Tamil Nadu authority, you can claim reservation and the related age benefits.

  • Candidates from other states: You are treated as "Others" and compete for open-competition posts under the general age limit, even if you belong to a reserved category in your own state.

Educational Qualification

Qualifications must be held on the date of the notification. A result declared after that date does not count, even if you passed the exam before. Where a degree is required, it must normally be obtained in the order SSLC, then HSC or diploma, then degree.

Exam

General requirement

Examples of post-specific requirements

Group 1

A degree from a recognised university

Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes): preference for B.Com, B.L. and a Diploma in Taxation Laws

Group 2 and 2A

B.L. for Law Department posts; MCA or M.Sc in Computer Science or IT for Assistant Section Officer cum Programmer; B.Com for some Accountant posts

Group 4

A pass in SSLC

Typewriting and the Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation for Typist; shorthand as well for Steno-Typist; HSC with science for Laboratory Assistant; a degree for some corporation Junior Assistant posts

Combined Technical Services

A diploma, ITI, degree or postgraduate degree in the relevant subject

For example, a civil engineering degree for Assistant Engineer (Civil); some posts also need experience or registration

Group 1B and 1C (when notified)

Post-specific

Law degree for Assistant Commissioner (HR and CE); master's degree for District Educational Officer

Points That Often Cause Problems

  • Final-year students: If your degree result was not declared by the notification date, you are not eligible for that cycle.

  • Equivalence: Degrees with unusual titles or from distance programmes must be recognised as equivalent. TNPSC publishes equivalence orders on its website; check them before applying.

  • Preference is not a requirement: Where a notification says a subject is "preferred", other graduates can still apply. The preference matters only when candidates are otherwise equal.

  • Technical certificates: For Group 4 Typist and Steno-Typist posts, the typewriting, shorthand and computer certificates must also be held by the notification date.

TNPSC Age Limit

TNPSC counts age as on 1 July of the recruitment year. The minimum age is what you must have completed on that date; the maximum age is what you must not have completed. TNPSC's community-based system works differently from most recruiting bodies: instead of adding a fixed number of years for reserved categories, it sets separate limits, and for many posts removes the upper limit altogether.

For most Group 4 posts, reserved-community candidates who hold a qualification higher than the minimum (for example, HSC or a degree for an SSLC-level post) have no maximum age limit. This does not apply to VAO and forest posts. Some corporation and laboratory posts have no upper limit for any community.

How to Check Your Age

Take a Group 4 candidate in the Others category applying for Junior Assistant. The maximum is 30, so they must not have turned 30 by 1 July 2026; a candidate born on or after 2 July 1996 qualifies. The minimum is 18, so they must have been born on or before 1 July 2008. Use the date of birth on your SSLC certificate, as that is the record TNPSC accepts.

Age Concessions for Special Categories

Category

How the concession works

Persons with benchmark disability

Up to 10 years above the normal limit in most exams, where the post is suitable for them

Ex-servicemen

A higher fixed limit set in each notification; not available to those already recruited to a government post

Destitute widows

Separate limits set per exam (for example, no maximum for most Group 2 posts and 35 for most Group 4 posts)

The exact concession figures change from one notification to the next, and older pages may still show earlier numbers. Follow the age table in the notification you apply under.

Community Certificates and Age

The higher age limits depend entirely on a valid community certificate. If you claim a reserved community in your application but cannot produce the certificate at verification, TNPSC treats you as Others. You may then fall outside the general age limit and lose the post. Make sure your certificate is issued by the competent Tamil Nadu authority and that the community named on it matches your application.

Knowledge of Tamil

Every TNPSC candidate needs adequate knowledge of Tamil. You can show it in one of these ways:

  • School or college study: Passing SSLC, HSC or a degree with Tamil as a language, or studying in Tamil medium.

  • Language test: Passing TNPSC's Second Class Language Test (Full Test) in Tamil, either before applying or within the period allowed after appointment.

The exams also test Tamil directly. Group 4 has a 100-question Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test where you need 60 of 150; Group 1 and Group 2 have a descriptive Tamil Eligibility Test in the mains where you need 40 of 100. If you miss these marks, the rest of your paper is not evaluated, so treat Tamil as an eligibility condition, not just a subject. Candidates with benchmark disabilities can claim exemption as set out in each notification.

Post-Specific and Physical Conditions

  • Religion: Posts in the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, such as Executive Officer and Assistant Commissioner (HR and CE), are open only to Hindus.

  • Gender-specific posts: Posts such as Jailor (Men) and Jailor (Special Prison for Women) are filled separately for men and women.

  • Physical standards: Jailor posts and Group 4 forest posts have height, chest and endurance standards. Persons with benchmark disability cannot apply for the forest posts.

  • Vision: Some posts disqualify candidates with colour blindness or night blindness.

  • Driving and experience: Forest Guard with Driving Licence needs a valid licence and driving experience as specified.

  • Service restriction: In Group 2, candidates in the Others category with five or more years of service under a central or state government cannot apply, even if within the age limit.

Number of Attempts and Fee Concessions

TNPSC does not cap the number of attempts. You can apply in every cycle as long as you meet the age and qualification rules. Fee concessions, however, are limited by attempts.

Category

Examination fee

SC, SC(A), ST, persons with benchmark disability, destitute widows

The One Time Registration fee of Rs. 150 (valid for five years) is separate from the exam fee.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Over-age candidates: Anyone who has completed the maximum age for their post and community on 1 July of the recruitment year.

  • Qualification not held in time: Candidates whose degree, SSLC or technical certificate was not obtained by the notification date.

  • Wrong order of study: Candidates whose degree was not obtained in the prescribed order, where the notification requires it.

  • Unsupported community claims: Candidates who claim a community without a valid Tamil Nadu community certificate are treated as Others, and may become over-age.

  • Debarred candidates: Those debarred by TNPSC or any other recruiting body for the period of debarment.

Documents That Prove Your Eligibility

Eligibility condition

Document

Age

SSLC mark sheet or certificate showing date of birth

Qualification

Degree certificate or provisional certificate and mark sheets; SSLC and HSC certificates

Community

Community certificate from the competent Tamil Nadu authority

Tamil knowledge

Mark sheets showing Tamil as a language or Tamil medium, or the language test pass certificate

Special categories

Disability, ex-servicemen or destitute widow certificate in the prescribed format

Technical posts

Typewriting, shorthand, computer or other technical certificates
