Telangana State Public Service Commission Group 1
TSPSC Group 1 is a recruitment exam conducted by Telangana State Public Service Commission, relevant to aspirants preparing for state-level administrative civil services.
TSPSC Group 1 Study Material
TSPSC Group 1 is the Telangana State Public Service Commission's recruitment exam for senior gazetted posts in the state government, such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Commercial Tax Officer and Mandal Parishad Development Officer. The Commission now works under the name Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC), but most aspirants still search for the exam as TSPSC Group 1. Selection runs through an objective Preliminary Test and a descriptive Main Examination, with no interview.
The latest completed cycle was Notification No. 02/2024 for 563 posts. Its Mains results were upheld by a Division Bench of the Telangana High Court in February 2026, and the Supreme Court declined to interfere in April 2026. As of 20 October 2026, the Commission's notifications page shows no new Group 1 notification. This page explains the exam as notified in 2024, so you can start preparing now and compare it with the next notification when it is released.

TSPSC Group 1 Notification Overview
Notification No. 02/2024 was issued on 19 February 2024 for 563 Group-I Services posts. It replaced Notification No. 04/2022, which the Commission cancelled. Candidates who had applied under the 2022 notification had to log in and apply again, but they did not have to pay the fee a second time.
Three points from the 2024 notification are worth knowing before the next cycle:
Higher age limit: The upper age limit for non-uniformed posts was raised from 44 to 46 years under G.O.Ms.No.30 of 8 February 2024.
Flexible exam mode: The Commission kept the right to hold the Preliminary Test in OMR or computer-based mode. The 2024 Preliminary Test was held in OMR mode.
Digital evaluation: Mains answer scripts can be evaluated digitally, conventionally or both.
Watch the TGPSC notifications page for the next Group 1 notification. Vacancies, age limits and dates can change from one notification to the next.

Two posts are stricter: Regional Transport Officer needs a degree in Mechanical or Automobile Engineering, and Assistant Treasury Officer / Assistant Accounts Officer needs a degree in Commerce, Economics or Mathematics with at least a second class in the subject. The degree result must be declared by the notification date.
Age limit
In the 2024 cycle, age was reckoned as on 1 July 2024. Most posts allowed 18 to 46 years. Deputy Superintendent of Police and Assistant Excise Superintendent allowed 21 to 35 years, Deputy Superintendent of Jails allowed 18 to 35 years, and Regional Transport Officer allowed 21 to 46 years.

Application Fee and How to Apply
Fee | Amount (2024 cycle) |
|---|---|
Online application processing fee | Rs. 200 (all applicants) |
Examination fee | Rs. 120 (unemployed applicants are exempt; government and PSU employees must pay) |
Complete One Time Registration (OTR): Register on the Commission's website and get your ID. If you are already registered, update your OTR first, because the application pulls its details from it.
Fill the Group 1 application: Log in with your ID, date of birth and OTP, check the details, choose your exam medium and centres, and upload your photo and signature.
Pay the fee online: Use net banking, debit card, credit card or UPI. Fees are not refunded.
Download the PDF application: Keep it safe; you need it at certificate verification.
Common reasons for rejection in this exam:
OTR not updated: Details you change in OTR after applying are not considered, including disability status.
Wrong OMR bubbling: A wrongly bubbled booklet series or hall ticket number invalidates the OMR sheet.
Mismatched documents: If the originals at verification do not match the application, the candidature is rejected.
Missing certificates: Community, non-creamy layer, EWS income and study certificates must be issued by Telangana authorities in the prescribed format.
TSPSC Group 1 Exam Pattern
Preliminary Test
Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
General Studies and Mental Ability (objective) | 150 | 150 | 2 hours 30 minutes |
Main Examination
Paper | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|
General English (qualifying) | 150 | 3 hours |
Paper I: General Essay | 150 | 3 hours |
Paper II: History, Culture and Geography | 150 | 3 hours |
Paper III: Indian Society, Constitution and Governance | 150 | 3 hours |
Paper IV: Economy and Development | 150 | 3 hours |
Paper V: Science and Technology and Data Interpretation | 150 | 3 hours |
Paper VI: Telangana Movement and State Formation | 150 | 3 hours |
Total counted for merit (Papers I to VI) | 900 | 18 hours |
Prelims marks only decide who reaches the Mains; about 50 candidates per vacancy in each multi-zone are admitted. The 2024 notification does not mention negative marking for the Preliminary Test, but read the instructions on your hall ticket and question booklet for the cycle you write.
What this means for you:
Prelims is a filter: Your prelims score is not added to the final merit, so aim to clear the 1:50 shortlist comfortably and move straight to Mains preparation.
Mains decides the job: All 900 merit marks come from six descriptive papers, so answer writing matters more than in most objective exams.
Do not neglect English: The General English paper is qualifying, but failing it ends your candidature regardless of your other marks.
Older pages may still show an interview stage. The 2024 notification selects candidates on Mains merit, so follow the official notification. The TSPSC Group 1 exam pattern guide covers marking and time management in detail.

Telangana-specific content runs through almost every paper, so it pays to build state notes early. The full topic list is on the TSPSC Group 1 syllabus page.
Selection Process
Preliminary Test: Screening only. Candidates are admitted to the Mains at 50 times the vacancies in each multi-zone, with extra candidates added where a reserved category falls short.
Main Examination: General English must be cleared (40% for OC, EWS and sportspersons, 35% for BC, 30% for SC, ST and PH). Papers I to VI, out of 900, decide the rank.
Minimum aggregate: To be considered for selection you need at least 40% of the aggregate (OC, EWS, sportspersons), 35% (BC) or 30% (SC, ST, PH).
Certificate verification and web options: Shortlisted candidates submit original documents and their order of preference of posts and multi-zones.
Medical examination and allotment: Posts are allotted on Mains merit, eligibility, web options and reservation, subject to medical fitness.
Salary and Career Growth
Group 1 posts carry the pay scales below under the 2024 notification. These are official scales; your in-hand salary depends on allowances such as DA and HRA, which vary by place of posting and are not stated in the notification.
Posts | Pay scale (Rs.) |
|---|---|
Deputy Collector, DSP, Commercial Tax Officer | 58,850 to 1,37,050 |
RTO, District Panchayat Officer, District Registrar, Deputy Superintendent of Jails, Assistant Commissioner of Labour, DSWO, DBCWO, DTWO | 54,220 to 1,33,630 |
Assistant Excise Superintendent, Municipal Commissioner Grade-II, District Employment Officer, Administrative Officer, ATO/AAO, Assistant Audit Officer, MPDO | 51,320 to 1,27,310 |
Promotion paths depend on each department's service rules. A Deputy Collector, for example, works in revenue administration and can move up through senior revenue and district-level roles over time.
How to Prepare for TSPSC Group 1
Prelims preparation
Start with the core four: History, polity, economy and geography of India and Telangana carry a large share of the paper and also feed the Mains.
Make current affairs a daily habit: Spend 30 to 40 minutes a day on state and national news and keep monthly notes.
Practise reasoning weekly: Logical reasoning and data interpretation reward regular practice more than last-minute study.
Mains preparation
Write from week one: Six descriptive papers mean answer-writing speed decides your score. Write at least one timed answer set a week, then daily as the exam nears.
Prepare Paper VI properly: The Telangana movement paper is unique to this exam, and good notes on its three phases pay off.
Plan for three essays: Paper I asks one essay from each of three sections, 50 marks each, so practise across all six themes.
Mock tests and revision
Full-length timed tests show whether you can finish 150 questions in two and a half hours with accuracy. For timed practice in the current pattern, you can attempt TSPSC Group 1 mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to plan your revision. Pair them with previous year papers from the official website to understand the real difficulty level, and keep an error log for weak topics.
Cut-off and Qualifying Marks
The Commission said in its 2024 prelims result notice that prelims marks and cut-off marks would be uploaded after the final result. We could not find an official category-wise cut-off list for the 2024 cycle, so treat figures circulating online as estimates. The official minimums you must reach are below.
Category | Minimum in Mains aggregate (out of 900) | Minimum in General English (out of 150) |
|---|---|---|
OC, EWS, sportspersons | 40% (360 marks) | 40% (60 marks) |
BC | 35% (315 marks) | 35% (52.5 marks) |
SC, ST, PH | 30% (270 marks) | 30% (45 marks) |
