UP PGT Commerce Syllabus 2026: Unit-Wise Topics, Subjects and Study Plan

The UP PGT Commerce syllabus 2026 defines what the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) can ask in the written exam for Post Graduate Teacher (Lecturer) posts in Commerce. The exam is held offline on 15 and 16 December 2026 under Advertisement No. 06/2026, so the syllabus is the first thing to settle before you plan your months.

The paper has two parts: 90 questions from Commerce and 30 questions from General Knowledge. This page breaks down both, explains how to prioritise units, and shows how to turn the syllabus into a weekly plan. For dates, vacancies and eligibility, see the exam overview page.

How the Syllabus Is Organised

UPESSC publishes the PGT syllabus subject-wise as a PDF on its website, and the Commerce version is largely in Hindi. Different preparation sources group the topics in slightly different ways. Some list ten subject areas, while older documents arrange the same material into three sections: Accounts, Business Organisation and Management, and Economics with Statistics. The content overlaps heavily, so the ten-area view below is the easiest way to plan, and it covers what the three-section version contains.

Because the official PDF is the final word, treat this page as a study map. Tick off each topic against the PDF once you download it.

Unit-Wise Detail

1. Business Environment and International Business

This unit looks at the forces outside a firm that shape its decisions. Expect questions on the economic system, government policy, the role of multinational companies, and the shift towards liberal trade policy. Know the basic ideas behind liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation, and the institutions that govern international trade.

2. Accounting and Auditing

This is the largest and most scoring part of the paper. Cover the double entry system, preparation of final accounts with adjustments, partnership accounts (admission, retirement, dissolution), and company accounts including issue and forfeiture of shares and redemption of preference shares and debentures. Add cost accounting basics, such as cost elements and unit and contract costing, along with managerial accounting tools like ratio analysis and break-even analysis. For auditing, study objectives, types, vouching and verification of assets.

3. Business Economics

Questions here are conceptual. Revise demand and elasticity, utility analysis, indifference curves, laws of production, cost curves, price determination under different market forms, business cycles and national income concepts. Diagrams help you remember these topics faster than text alone.

4. Business Finance

Focus on financial planning, sources of long-term and short-term finance, capital structure theories, cost of capital, working capital management and dividend policy. A few numerical questions are possible, so practise the formulas.

5. Business Statistics and Research Methods

Cover collection and presentation of data, measures of central tendency and dispersion, correlation, regression, index numbers and business forecasting. Add the research side: types of research, sampling methods, hypothesis and report writing. These topics suit short, calculation-based questions that can be solved quickly once the formulas are clear.

6. Business Management and Human Resource Management

Study the functions of management (planning, organising, staffing, directing, controlling), the contributions of Taylor, Fayol and Mayo, motivation theories and leadership styles. In HRM, revise manpower planning, recruitment, selection, training and appraisal.

7. Banking and Financial Institutions

Revise the structure of the Indian banking system, the role of the Reserve Bank of India, credit control, money and capital markets, insurance and the regulators of financial markets. This unit also overlaps with current affairs, so reading financial news helps.

8. Marketing Management

Know the marketing mix, market segmentation, product life cycle, pricing methods, channels of distribution and promotion tools. Questions are usually direct and definition-based.

9. Legal Aspects of Business

Prepare the Indian Contract Act, Sale of Goods Act, negotiable instruments, basic company law and consumer protection law. Learn the key sections and the difference between similar terms, such as void and voidable contracts.

10. Income Tax and Corporate Tax Planning

Start with basic definitions such as assessee, previous year, assessment year and agricultural income. Then study residential status, the heads of income, deductions and the idea of tax planning for companies.

UP PGT General Knowledge Syllabus 2026

The 30-question General Knowledge section carries 90 marks, which is a quarter of the whole paper. It is common to all PGT subjects. Based on the revised syllabus, it covers the areas below.

Area

Topics

History and Culture

Ancient, medieval and modern Indian history, with focus on the national movement

Geography

Physical, social and economic geography of India and Uttar Pradesh

Polity and Constitution

Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, parliamentary system, local self-government

Indian Economy

Planning, sustainable development, economic reforms, national income

General Science and Technology

Basic physics, chemistry, biology and recent scientific developments

Uttar Pradesh GK

History, culture, festivals, geography, demography, agriculture and government schemes

Current Affairs

Important national and international events

Since you already study economy and business for Commerce, those overlaps give you a head start. Spend your extra effort on Uttar Pradesh specific topics and current affairs.

Accounting Topics Checklist

Because accounting is the heaviest area, it helps to break it into smaller checkpoints you can tick off.

Topic

What to be able to do

Double entry and final accounts

Pass journal entries, prepare trading and profit and loss accounts and a balance sheet with adjustments

Partnership accounts

Handle admission, retirement, death of a partner, goodwill valuation and dissolution

Company accounts

Record issue, forfeiture and reissue of shares; redeem preference shares and debentures

Cost accounting

Prepare cost sheets and solve unit and contract costing problems

Managerial accounting

Compute ratios and perform break-even analysis

Auditing

Explain audit types, vouching steps and verification of assets

Solve at least a few problems from each row, since multiple choice questions in accounting often test a single adjustment or a single step.

Statistics and Finance Formula Checklist

Numerical questions are easy marks when the formula is fresh in memory. Keep a running sheet and revise it every week.

  • Statistics: Mean, median and mode, standard deviation and coefficient of variation, correlation coefficient, regression lines and index number methods.

  • Finance: Cost of debt, equity and preference capital, weighted average cost of capital, working capital cycle and basic leverage measures.

  • Accounting ratios: Liquidity, solvency, turnover and profitability ratios, along with the break-even point and margin of safety.

Practise applying each formula to two or three short problems, rather than memorising it in isolation.

Which Units to Prioritise

With 90 Commerce questions spread across ten areas, not every unit deserves equal time. A practical split looks like this:

  • High priority: Accounting and Auditing, Business Economics, Business Statistics and Research Methods. These are rich in questions and reward steady practice.

  • Medium priority: Business Finance, Management and HRM, Banking, Legal Aspects, Income Tax.

  • Quick wins: Marketing and Business Environment. These are lighter and can be revised in a few days.

The number of questions per unit is not published in the syllabus, so treat this as a planning guide and adjust it using your mock test results.

A Syllabus-Based Study Plan

With the exam on 15 and 16 December, turn the syllabus into weekly targets.

Weeks

Focus

1 to 3

Accounting and Auditing, with daily numerical practice

4 to 5

Business Economics and Statistics

6 to 7

Finance, Management and HRM, Banking

8

Marketing, Legal Aspects, Income Tax, Business Environment

9 to 10

Full revision, mock tests and General Knowledge consolidation

Study General Knowledge for 30 to 40 minutes every day alongside this plan instead of leaving it for the end.

Common Mistakes While Covering the Syllabus

  • Skipping lighter units: Marketing, legal aspects and tax are often left until the end and then rushed. A few days each, spread through the plan, is enough.

  • Reading without testing: Finishing a unit does not mean you remember it. A short quiz exposes gaps quickly.

  • Ignoring General Knowledge: Thirty questions carry 90 marks, and Commerce candidates often under-prepare this part.

  • Relying on outdated syllabus pages: Several websites still show a 125-question paper from earlier cycles. Always confirm against the official PDF.

Preparation Tips Based on the Syllabus

  • Download the official PDF: Compare it line by line with this page and note any topic that appears only in one of them.

  • Use a standard postgraduate textbook per unit: The questions follow university-level Commerce, so college textbooks are the safest source.

  • Make formula sheets: Keep one page each for accounting ratios, statistics and finance formulas.

  • Learn Hindi terminology too: The official syllabus is largely in Hindi, so learn key terms in both languages.

  • Test unit by unit: After finishing each area, take a short test before moving on.

How to Revise the Syllabus in the Last Month

In the final four weeks, stop learning new material and shift to repeated cycles of revision. Go through your short notes unit by unit, and keep the formula sheets within reach. Every third day, solve a mixed set of questions covering several units, because the real paper will jump from auditing to marketing to economics without warning.

Keep a notebook of errors. Whenever a mock test question goes wrong, write the concept, the correct answer and the reason you missed it. Reread this notebook in the last week instead of opening full textbooks again. It reflects your own weak spots, which makes it far more useful than generic notes.

Finally, rehearse the exam routine itself. Practise marking answers on an OMR-style sheet and apply your rule for when to guess and when to skip, so that negative marking does not catch you off guard on the day.

The UP PGT Commerce syllabus is wide but predictable: ten Commerce areas plus a common General Knowledge section. Download the official PDF from upessc.up.gov.in, start with accounting, economics and statistics, and keep General Knowledge in your daily routine. With about ten weeks left, a unit-wise plan backed by regular tests is the most reliable way to cover everything.
