UPHESC Assistant Professor Eligibility 2026: Age and Qualification

UPHESC Assistant Professor eligibility depends on three things: your Master's degree and marks, your NET, SLET, SET or PhD status, and your age on a fixed reference date. The rules below are for the current cycle, Advertisement No. 04/2026, run by the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), which now conducts the recruitment once handled by UPHESC.

The application window for this cycle has closed, but the same conditions guide document verification and future cycles. Subject-specific conditions are in the official notification, so use this page as a plain-language checklist and confirm details on the UPESSC website.

Educational qualification

You need a Master's degree from a university recognised by the University Grants Commission, in the subject you are applying for or in a related subject that the notification accepts.

  • Marks: At least 55% in the Master's degree. Reserved categories may get relaxation in the minimum marks as per the notification, and one report puts it at 50%. Treat that as tentative and read the notification for your category.

  • Degree held on the application date: The qualification must be complete when you apply. Final-year students are reported as not eligible, so confirm this in the notification.

  • Percentage or grades: If your university awards CGPA, convert it using your university's official formula and keep the conversion certificate.

  • Subject match: Your Master's subject should match the subject chosen in the form. A mismatch is a common reason for rejection.

Fine arts, music and other special subjects

Subjects such as fine arts and music can carry their own conditions. If you apply in one of these, read the subject-specific line in the notification before filling the form.

NET, SLET, SET and PhD

Assistant Professor posts follow UGC norms, so an eligibility test is required in addition to the Master's degree. You can qualify in any of these ways.

Route

What it means

UGC NET

Qualified in the National Eligibility Test conducted for Assistant Professor eligibility

CSIR NET

Qualified in the CSIR UGC NET for the relevant science subject

SLET or SET

Qualified in a state-level eligibility test recognised by the UGC

PhD exemption

Holds a PhD awarded as per the UGC regulations in force on the relevant date, which can exempt you from NET, SLET or SET

The date of award, the type of PhD and the minimum marks in the Master's degree decide whether the exemption applies. Check the UGC rules on the UGC website and the wording of the notification before you rely on it. Keep your NET or SET certificate or PhD award letter ready for document verification.

Age limit

The maximum age is 62 years as on 1 July 2026. The date matters: your age is counted on that day, not on the exam date. Age relaxation for reserved categories and other groups follows the rules of the Uttar Pradesh government, and the exact relaxation is stated in the notification. This page does not quote relaxation figures, because the commission's table could not be verified from the official source for this draft.

Nationality, domicile and reservation

  • Citizenship: Indian citizens can apply.

  • Reservation benefits: Reports indicate that SC, ST, OBC and EWS reservation applies to Uttar Pradesh domicile holders. Confirm this in the notification.

  • Certificates: Category certificates must be in the prescribed format and valid on the cut-off date mentioned in the notification. OBC candidates usually need a non-creamy layer certificate.

  • Horizontal reservation: Women, persons with disabilities and dependents of freedom fighters are covered by horizontal reservation as per the notification.

Who is not eligible

  • No NET, SLET, SET or qualifying PhD: Without one of these, a Master's degree alone is not enough.

  • Marks below the minimum: A Master's score under the required percentage for your category.

  • Over the age limit: Age above 62 years on 1 July 2026 without a relaxation that applies.

  • Unrecognised degree: A degree from an institution not recognised by the UGC.

  • Wrong subject: Applying in a subject unrelated to your Master's degree.

Fee and documents

The online fee for this cycle was Rs. 2,000 for General, OBC and EWS candidates, Rs. 1,500 for SC and ST, and Rs. 1,000 for PwD candidates. Keep these ready for verification:

  • Educational proof: Master's marksheets and degree.

  • Eligibility proof: NET, SLET, SET certificate or PhD award proof.

  • Identity and category: Photo identity, category and domicile certificates where applicable.

  • Application printout: The final submitted form and fee receipt.
