UPHESC Assistant Professor Exam Pattern 2026: Marks and Stages
The UPHESC Assistant Professor exam pattern for the current cycle is a single objective paper of 120 questions and 360 marks, followed by a 40-mark interview. The recruitment is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC) under Advertisement No. 04/2026, and the written exam is scheduled for 19 and 20 November 2026.
The pattern is different from the earlier cycle, so this page explains the marks, the penalty for wrong answers and how to spend your two hours. It also shows how the final merit score is built.
Table of Contents
Exam pattern at a glance
Stage | Format | Marks | Duration | Counted in final merit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Written exam | Objective, multiple choice | 360 | 2 hours | Yes |
Interview | Personal interview | 40 | As per call letter | Yes |
Document verification | Certificate check | No marks | As per schedule | Eligibility check only |
Written exam pattern
Section | Questions | Marks per question | Total marks |
|---|---|---|---|
General Knowledge | 30 | 3 | 90 |
Concerned subject | 90 | 3 | 270 |
Total | 120 | 3 | 360 |
Each question has four options. Both sections come in the same paper, so you can move between them freely unless the instructions on the paper say otherwise. The subject section follows the syllabus of the subject you chose in the application. The commission's notification and instructions on the admit card are the final authority on language and paper rules.
Marking scheme and negative marking
Correct answer: 3 marks.
Wrong or multiple answer: 1 mark is deducted.
Unattempted question: No deduction is mentioned for leaving a question blank.
A worked example helps. If you attempt 110 questions, get 90 right and 20 wrong, your score is 90 x 3 = 270, minus 20, which gives 250 out of 360. Attempting more questions with poor accuracy can lower a score that careful attempts would have kept higher.
What the pattern means for you
The subject decides the result: It holds 270 of 360 marks, so a weak subject score cannot be rescued by General Knowledge.
A guess is worth it only with real odds: With four options, a blind guess has an expected loss. If you can remove two options and are left with two, the guess becomes worth taking.
Every question costs about a minute: 120 questions in 120 minutes leaves no spare time, so you cannot afford long calculations or reading each option twice.
Sectional minimums may apply: Merit is prepared subject-wise, so check the notification for any qualifying marks before the interview stage.
Interview and document verification
Candidates shortlisted from the written exam are called for an interview carrying 40 marks. The call letter, venue and schedule are published by the commission. Selected candidates then go through document verification, where educational certificates, NET or PhD proof, category certificates and identity documents are checked. A mismatch can cancel candidature even after a good score, so keep originals ready.
Final merit calculation
The final score is the written marks plus interview marks, out of 400. Merit is drawn up subject-wise and category-wise.
Component | Maximum marks | Example score |
|---|---|---|
Written exam | 360 | 250 |
Interview | 40 | 30 |
Final score | 400 | 280 |
The example is only for understanding and is not a prediction of any cut-off. The written paper carries 90 percent of the final score, so the interview helps but rarely rescues a weak paper.
Time management and exam-day strategy
Minutes 0 to 8: Skim the paper and note which section looks easier for you.
Minutes 8 to 90: Solve questions you are sure about first, across both sections, and mark doubtful ones.
Minutes 90 to 112: Return to marked questions and eliminate options before choosing.
Last 8 minutes: Check that the answers are marked correctly and avoid changing answers without a clear reason.
The pattern is easiest to learn by practising it. You can attempt UPHESC Assistant Professor mock tests on Testkart that follow the 30 plus 90 split and review where your minutes went. Use the syllabus page to decide what to revise after each test.
Older pattern warning
Under Advertisement No. 51, the earlier cycle was reported as 100 questions, 200 marks, 2 marks per question, no negative marking and a 30-mark interview, for 230 marks in total. Older pages and videos may still show that pattern, so follow the official notification of the cycle you have applied for, available on the UPESSC website.
