Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission RO ARO
UPPSC RO ARO is a recruitment exam conducted by Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission, relevant to candidates preparing for state government department recruitment.
UPPSC RO ARO is the recruitment exam for the posts of Samiksha Adhikari (Review Officer) and Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari (Assistant Review Officer) in Uttar Pradesh. It is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) for the UP Secretariat, the Board of Revenue and the Commission itself. For graduates who want a stable state government job with a clear promotion ladder, it is one of the most sought-after clerical-administrative exams in the state.
As of 22 October 2026, the commission has not released a new RO ARO notification. The last full cycle, run under advertisement A-7/E-1/2023, ended with a provisional final result on 5 April 2026. This page explains that cycle, what usually stays the same from one cycle to the next, and how to start preparing now. Figures marked as previous cycle or indicative must be re-checked in the new notification.

Where the notification stands
The commission has not announced a vacancy count, application window or exam date for the next RO ARO cycle. Several websites already carry headings such as "UPPSC RO ARO 2026 notification out", but they usually reuse the 2023 advertisement. Do not rely on a date that does not link to a notice on the commission's own site.
The previous cycle is a useful guide because the commission tends to keep the stage structure and the broad syllabus stable. It does not guarantee that pattern details, age limits or fees will repeat. The commission publishes its advertisements on its website, so check https://uppsc.up.nic.in regularly instead of waiting for third-party alerts.
Why the last cycle took so long
The 2023 recruitment saw its first prelims scheduled for February 2024, which was later cancelled after complaints about the paper. The prelims was held again in July 2025. That history is worth knowing: it shows why you should start early and not plan your whole year around a rumoured date.

Posts and vacancy details
The 2023 advertisement initially listed 411 posts. The reported department-wise split is below. The final selection list showed 419 candidates provisionally selected (338 for RO and 81 for ARO), so the number moved during the cycle.
Department | Post | Vacancies (initial, previous cycle) |
|---|---|---|
UP Secretariat | Samiksha Adhikari | 322 |
UPPSC | Samiksha Adhikari | 9 |
Board of Revenue | Samiksha Adhikari | 3 |
UP Secretariat | Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari | 40 |
Board of Revenue | Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari | 23 |
UPPSC | Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari | 13 |
UPPSC | Sahayak Samiksha Adhikari (Accounts) | 1 |
Total | 411 |
These numbers are indicative only. Category-wise vacancies are not covered here because they change with every advertisement, and the next cycle has no confirmed vacancy count.
Eligibility in brief
The full rules are on the UPPSC RO ARO eligibility page. The points below are the ones most candidates ask about first.
Educational qualification
A bachelor's degree from a recognised university is the base requirement. ARO posts have extra conditions that depend on the department, such as a computer qualification (a DOEACC O Level or an equivalent diploma) and Hindi typing skills. The Accounts post has a Commerce-related requirement. Read the post-wise qualification in the new notification before applying.
Age limit
The previous cycle was reported with a minimum age of 21 years and a maximum of 40 years. The reference date and the relaxation for reserved categories, UP government employees, ex-servicemen and persons with disabilities are fixed in each notification, so treat any figure you see now as indicative.
Other conditions
Domicile and category: Relaxations generally apply to candidates of Uttar Pradesh. Keep your domicile and category certificates ready.
Computer and typing skills: These matter for ARO posts and are tested or verified at later stages.
Application fee and how to apply
The fee reported for the previous cycle is shown below. It is historical and has not been confirmed for the next cycle.
Category | Fee (previous cycle, indicative) |
|---|---|
General, EWS and OBC | Rs. 125 |
SC and ST | Rs. 65 |
Ex-servicemen | Rs. 65 |
Persons with disabilities | Rs. 25 |
Steps to apply
Complete One Time Registration (OTR): Register on the commission's portal if you have not already. Your OTR details are reused for later applications, so enter them carefully.
Select the advertisement: Open the RO ARO advertisement once it is live and choose the post and department preferences.
Upload documents: Add your photograph, signature and any required certificates in the size and format stated in the notification.
Pay the fee and submit: Pay online, submit the form and keep a copy of the confirmation.
Common reasons for rejection include a name or date of birth that does not match your certificates, an unreadable signature, and applying under a category without a valid certificate. Check every entry before final submission, since correction windows are short.
Exam pattern
The previous cycle used a prelims for screening and a mains for merit. The structure below is from the 2023 advertisement as reported by multiple sources. Confirm it against the new notification.
Preliminary exam
Paper | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Paper 1: General Studies | 140 | 140 | 2 hours |
Paper 2: General Hindi | 60 | 60 | 1 hour |
Total | 200 | 200 | 3 hours |
One-third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer. Unattempted questions carry no penalty. The prelims is a qualifying stage, and its marks do not count in the final merit.
Mains exam
Paper | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|
Paper 1: General Studies (objective) | 120 | 2 hours |
Paper 2 Part 1: General Hindi and Drafting (conventional) | 100 | 2.5 hours |
Paper 2 Part 2: General Vocabulary (objective) | 60 | 30 minutes |
Paper 3: Hindi Essay | 120 | 3 hours |
Total | 400 |
What this means for you:
Hindi carries real weight: General Hindi, drafting and the essay together make up 280 of the 400 mains marks, so Hindi writing is not a side topic.
Prelims is a hurdle, not a score: Aim for a safe qualifying margin, then put the saved energy into mains writing.
Wrong guesses cost marks: With one-third negative marking, guess only when you can eliminate options.
Some websites show a different mains total or marks split. Older pages may still show an earlier pattern, so follow the official notification. See the UPPSC RO ARO exam pattern page for the full breakdown.
Syllabus summary
Subject | Stage | Important topics |
|---|---|---|
General Studies | Prelims and mains | General Science, Indian History and National Movement, Polity, Economy, Geography, Agriculture and Trade, Ecology, Current Affairs, General Intelligence, Uttar Pradesh special knowledge |
General Hindi | Prelims and mains | Synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, sentence correction, idioms, vocabulary |
Hindi and Drafting | Mains | Precis, passage explanation, official and demi-official letters, office memos, circulars |
Hindi Essay | Mains | Literature and culture, social and political issues, science and technology, economy, national and international events |
The commission lists broad heads rather than a detailed topic-wise list. The topics above are a working checklist built from the notification and from previous questions, so use them as a guide and not as an official list. The UPPSC RO ARO syllabus page breaks them down further.
Selection process
Preliminary exam: Qualifying only. In the previous cycle, 7,509 candidates qualified (as reported).
Mains written exam: Decides merit. About 5,930 candidates were reported to have appeared.
Typing or skill test: Applies to the relevant ARO posts and is qualifying in nature. Required speeds and language vary by department, so check the notification.
Document verification: Final recommendation is made after your documents are checked.
The minimum qualifying standard reported for the previous cycle was 35% for SC and ST candidates and 40% for others. Confirm the current standard in the notification.
Salary and career growth
Pay levels differ between websites, so treat the figures below as indicative and check the advertisement.
Post | Pay level and scale (reported, indicative) |
|---|---|
Review Officer | Level 8: Rs. 47,600 to Rs. 1,51,100 |
Assistant Review Officer | Level 7: Rs. 44,900 to Rs. 1,42,400 |
In-hand pay depends on allowances such as dearness allowance and house rent allowance, which vary by city. This is not an official figure, so use it only for rough planning. Review Officers work with files, notes, records and drafts in departments, and promotion follows the state's service rules.
How to prepare for UPPSC RO ARO
Preparation works best when you split it by stage but study the shared parts once.
Months 1 to 3: build the base
General Studies: Cover History, Polity, Geography and Economy from standard school-level books, and add Uttar Pradesh-specific facts separately.
Hindi: Revise grammar, vocabulary and idioms daily. This pays off in both prelims and mains.
Current affairs: Read for 30 minutes daily and make short monthly notes.
Months 4 to 6: practise by topic
Attempt topic-wise tests after each subject and review your errors.
Start writing precis, letters and essays by hand. Time them, since the mains has descriptive papers.
Final phase: full-length practice
Take full prelims papers in the 3-hour format, then analyse them the same day. You can attempt UPPSC RO ARO online tests on Testkart for timed practice and use the section-wise analysis to decide what to revise. Pair them with previous year papers to understand the real difficulty level.
Keep an error log of questions you got wrong or skipped. Revising it weekly improves accuracy faster than reading new material.
Typing practice for ARO aspirants
If you plan to target ARO posts, practise Hindi typing early and keep your computer certificate ready. These are easy to leave until late and hard to fix at the last minute.
Cut-off reference
Official category-wise cut-offs are published by the commission with its results. Figures on third-party sites are often estimates and may not match the official list, so treat them only as a rough benchmark. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants. Aim for a clear margin above the last cut-off rather than a bare pass. The UPPSC RO ARO cut-off page explains how to set a target.
