UPPSC RO ARO Syllabus 2026: Prelims and Mains Topic List
The UPPSC RO ARO syllabus covers General Studies, General Hindi, Hindi drafting and an essay paper. If you are starting preparation before the next notification, the syllabus tells you where to spend the most time and which topics repeat across stages. This page lists the topics stage by stage, shows where the prelims and mains overlap, and gives a week-wise plan you can follow.
One point first. The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission names the papers and broad heads in its advertisement, but it does not publish a detailed topic-wise list for each subject. The topic lists below are built from the 2023 advertisement and from questions asked in earlier years. Use them as a working checklist, and confirm the paper names and any changes on https://uppsc.up.nic.in once the new notification is out.

Key points to know before you start
Prelims is qualifying: In the previous cycle its marks did not count in the final merit, so use it to qualify and not to maximise.
Mains decides merit: General Hindi, drafting and the essay together carry more marks than General Studies in the mains.
Hindi is the medium for most papers: Strong reading and writing habits in Hindi matter as much as factual knowledge.
Older pages can mislead: Some websites show an earlier pattern or a different marks split. Always compare with the official notification.
Prelims syllabus
Paper 1: General Studies
This paper tests breadth. Questions come from many areas, so a steady revision cycle works better than going deep into one topic.
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
General Science | Physics, chemistry and biology basics, everyday science, human body, diseases, nutrition, environment-linked science | Class 6 to 10 science concepts |
Indian History and National Movement | Ancient, medieval and modern India, cultural heritage, freedom struggle, social reform movements | Modern history and national movement |
Polity, Economy and Culture | Constitution, institutions, panchayati raj, basic economic concepts, planning, banking, art and culture | Constitution basics and institutions |
Agriculture, Commerce and Trade | Major crops, irrigation, agricultural schemes, trade basics, commerce terms | Crops and schemes of Uttar Pradesh |
Population, Ecology and Urbanisation | Census concepts, environment, biodiversity, climate issues, urban development | Environment basics and census terms |
Geography | World geography, geography and natural resources of India, rivers, soils, minerals, climate | Indian physical geography |
Current National and International Events | Recent events, awards, appointments, summits, schemes, sports | Last 12 months of events |
General Intelligence | Series, coding, relationships, direction sense, basic reasoning | Series and analogies |
Uttar Pradesh special knowledge | History, geography, culture, economy, schemes and administration of the state | Districts, rivers, schemes and administration |
High-yield areas based on earlier papers are History, Polity, Geography, Uttar Pradesh facts and current events. Science and reasoning are usually the easiest marks to protect once your basics are clear.
Paper 2: General Hindi
This 60-question paper is short but unforgiving, because one-third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer. The topics reported for the previous cycle include:
Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms and related words (paryayvachi and vilom shabd).
Word formation: One-word substitution, noun and adjective derivation, prefixes and suffixes.
Correction: Sentence correction, spelling correction and word usage.
Idioms and phrases: Muhavare and lokoktiyan with their meanings and use.
Because this paper is also practised for mains, the effort you put in now is not wasted.
Mains syllabus
Paper 1: General Studies
The mains General Studies paper draws on the same heads as the prelims, but the questions tend to be more analytical and focus on Uttar Pradesh. Plan to revisit prelims material with an eye on cause, effect and administrative context.
History and culture: Indian National Movement, social reformers, art, architecture and cultural traditions of India and Uttar Pradesh.
Polity and governance: Constitution, centre-state relations, local government, public administration basics and welfare schemes.
Economy and planning: Growth, budget basics, agriculture, industry, development plans and state economy.
Geography: India and Uttar Pradesh, natural resources, population, ecology and urbanisation.
Science and technology: General science and recent developments.
Current events: National and international events of the last year.
Paper 2: General Hindi and Drafting
This paper has a written part and an objective part, so it rewards both speed and neat expression.
Part | Topics to cover | How to practise |
|---|---|---|
Part 1: Conventional (100 marks) | Precis writing, explanation of a passage, tabular precis, official and demi-official letters, office memos, circulars | Write one item daily under a time limit and compare with a model format |
Part 2: General Vocabulary (60 marks) | Vocabulary, idioms, grammar, word usage, computer knowledge as listed in the advertisement | Take short objective sets and keep a word list |
Paper 3: Hindi Essay
The essay paper tests clarity, structure and range of ideas. Topics reported from the previous advertisement include:
Literature and culture: Literary figures, cultural heritage and traditions.
Social and political fields: Governance, social issues, democracy and public policy.
Science and technology: Innovation, digital India and everyday impact.
Economy, agriculture and commerce: Farmers, trade, employment and development.
National and international events: Current developments and their effect on India.
Natural calamities and development plans: Disaster management, planning and sustainability.
The paper usually expects three essays, so practise planning an introduction, three or four main points and a short conclusion for each.
Overlap between prelims and mains
Area | Prelims | Mains | How to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
General Studies | Fact-based objective | Objective with deeper context | Study each topic once, then revise it with a mains lens |
General Hindi | Grammar and vocabulary | Grammar, vocabulary and drafting | Build vocabulary early so both stages benefit |
Current affairs | Short factual questions | Essay content and GS | Keep monthly notes and reuse them for essay examples |
Uttar Pradesh knowledge | Direct facts | Context for GS and essay | Keep a single UP fact file |
Typing test and later stages
The previous cycle included a Hindi typing test for relevant ARO posts, held in February 2026. Requirements depend on the department and post, and sources do not agree on the exact speed, so read the notification for the required language, speed and test format. There is no separate syllabus for typing. What helps is daily practice on a standard Hindi keyboard layout and a valid computer qualification where required.
No interview was part of the process in the previous cycle, so no interview syllabus applies unless the new notification adds one.
How to cover the syllabus
A phased plan keeps things manageable. Adjust the weeks to your available time.
Weeks 1 to 8, concepts: Finish History, Polity, Geography and Economy from basic books. Revise Hindi grammar every day for 30 minutes.
From week 3, current affairs: Spend 30 to 40 minutes a day and write monthly notes.
From week 6, topic tests: Attempt short topic tests after each subject and record every error.
From week 10, writing practice: Add one precis or letter and one essay outline per day, then write a full essay twice a week.
Final phase, full mocks: Take full-length papers, analyse the same day and revise your error log.
For timed practice in the prelims format, you can attempt online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to see which topics need more work. Previous year papers will show you how the difficulty and topic mix have changed.
Books and sources
Official source: The advertisement and syllabus notice on https://uppsc.up.nic.in decide the final scope.
Basics: NCERT books for History, Geography, Science and Polity are a safe starting point.
Hindi: A standard Hindi grammar book and a collection of official drafting formats.
Uttar Pradesh: State government publications and a reliable state-specific general knowledge book.
Revisit the syllabus after every full test. If you keep losing marks in the same section, give that section more days in the next week instead of covering new topics. You can also read the exam pattern page and the main exam page to see how each paper fits the final merit.
