Engineering Entrance

WB JEE

WB JEE is an entrance examination taken by students preparing for undergraduate engineering admissions.

WBJEE is the state-level entrance examination conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) for admission to engineering, technology, architecture and pharmacy programmes in participating institutes of West Bengal. Every year lakhs of Class 12 students use it as their route into government and private engineering colleges in the state.

This page gives you the exam in one place: what the board has officially published, how the paper is built, who can apply, how ranks are made, and how to prepare. The details below come from the official WBJEE 2026 Information Bulletin, which is the latest full bulletin available. The board has not yet published the 2027 notification, so anything about 2027 is marked as tentative.

The paper is purely objective, so what matters is accuracy under time pressure. The marking scheme is unusual because it has three question categories, which we explain in the pattern section below.

Where the 2027 cycle stands

As of 22 October 2026, the official WBJEEB pages show only the 2026 cycle, and the board is still running counselling and vacancy allocation for 2026 admissions. No 2027 information bulletin, registration window or exam date has been posted yet.

What this means for you: the 2026 bulletin is your best guide right now. WBJEE has kept its two-paper structure and category-based marking stable for several cycles, so preparing on the 2026 pattern is a sound start. Still, treat any rule as provisional until the 2027 bulletin is out, and read the new bulletin fully on the board's website as soon as it appears at https://wbjeeb.nic.in/wbjee/.

Many third-party pages already show 2027 dates. These are expectations based on earlier years, not announcements, so do not plan fees, travel or leave around them.

Eligibility in brief

The full rules are on our WBJEE eligibility criteria page. Here is the short version, based on the 2026 bulletin.

  • Nationality: Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI). OCI candidates are considered only for unreserved all-India quota seats, subject to approval.

  • Qualification: Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent, passed or appearing in the exam year, with English and the subjects required for the course you want.

  • Age: In 2026 a candidate had to be born on or before 31 December 2009, which is a minimum age of 17 years on 31 December 2026. There is no upper age limit except for Marine Engineering (25 years).

  • Marks: At least 30 percent in English for engineering. Architecture, pharmacy, marine and some private institutes ask for higher aggregates.

The age cut-off date moves with each cycle, so the 2027 date will be different. Wait for the 2027 bulletin before you assume you are eligible by a few months.

Application fee and how to apply

The 2026 fee, paid online by net banking, card, UPI or QR code, was as follows. The fee is non-refundable. The 2027 fee has not been announced.

Candidates with a benchmark disability can ask for a 40 percent fee concession in writing, with documents, before the application deadline.

The application is online only. The usual flow is:

  1. Read the information bulletin and check eligibility for your course.

  2. Register on the official portal with a working mobile number and email.

  3. Fill in personal, academic and category details carefully.

  4. Upload the photograph, signature and other items in the format the bulletin specifies.

  5. Pay the fee and keep a copy of the confirmation page.

  6. Download the admit card when the board releases it.

Mistakes in name, date of birth and category are the most common reasons for trouble at counselling, so check each entry before final submission.

Exam pattern

WBJEE has two papers on the same day. Paper I is Mathematics. Paper II combines Physics and Chemistry. All questions are multiple choice with four options, answered on an OMR sheet with a ballpoint pen.

  • Category 1: one correct option, 1 mark, minus one-fourth mark for a wrong answer.

  • Category 2: one correct option, 2 marks, minus half a mark for a wrong answer.

  • Category 3: one or more options may be correct, 2 marks, no negative marking. Any wrong option marked gives zero, and partial credit is possible if you mark only correct options.

Older pages may still show previous marking schemes, so follow the official bulletin. Our WBJEE exam pattern page explains the marking with worked examples.

Syllabus summary

The board's syllabus is based on the Class 11 and Class 12 courses and is listed chapter-wise in the bulletin appendix.

Subject

Major areas

Mathematics

Algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry (2D and 3D), calculus, vectors, statistics and probability

Physics

Mechanics, properties of matter, heat, waves, electricity and magnetism, optics, modern physics, electronics

Chemistry

Physical chemistry (mole concept, thermodynamics, equilibrium, kinetics, electrochemistry), inorganic chemistry (periodicity, bonding, states of matter), organic chemistry (hydrocarbons, functional groups, biomolecules)

Because Mathematics carries half the total marks, it deserves roughly half of your study hours. The detailed chapter list is on our WBJEE syllabus page.

Rank, merit and counselling

WBJEE does not issue a simple percentage result. It issues ranks that decide the order in which you are called to counselling.

  • General Merit Rank (GMR): based on the total of Paper I and Paper II. It is used for engineering, technology and architecture, and for pharmacy at Jadavpur University.

  • Pharmacy Merit Rank (PMR): based on Paper II only. It is used for pharmacy admissions elsewhere.

If you appear in both papers you can get both ranks. If you appear only in Paper II, you can get a PMR only. If you appear only in Paper I, no rank is issued. Ties are broken by a long list of rules, starting with fewer negative marks across the three subjects combined.

Seats are then filled through online counselling with choice filling, seat allotment, and later rounds for vacancies. Closing ranks depend on the year, branch and college, so read our WBJEE cut-off and closing rank guide to learn how to set a realistic target.

Reservation and domicile

Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, EWS, PwD and TFW categories as per West Bengal government rules. Government-aided colleges mostly need West Bengal domicile. Candidates with a disability of 40 percent or more can request extra time or a scribe by applying to the board well before the exam. A Tuition Fee Waiver is available to domiciled candidates whose annual family income is below Rs. 2.5 lakh. Keep your certificates ready early, because issuing authorities are specified in the bulletin.

How to prepare for WBJEE

A workable plan for a Class 12 student follows three phases.

  1. Build concepts: Finish the board syllabus chapter by chapter, with NCERT-level clarity first. Give Mathematics daily practice, because speed here pays off most.

  2. Practise by topic: After each chapter, solve topic-wise questions. Keep an error log of every wrong answer and the reason: concept gap, calculation slip or misreading.

  3. Simulate the exam: In the last two to three months, attempt full papers in the real format, with Paper I and Paper II on the same day, and review each paper within 24 hours.

Two habits matter more than extra hours. First, learn the Category 3 type: these multiple-correct questions reward knowing a concept fully, so revise chapters until you can state every true and false statement. Second, decide when to skip. With negative marking in Categories 1 and 2, a blind guess costs marks.

Practising with previous papers and mock tests

The board publishes old WBJEE question papers on its website at https://wbjeeb.nic.in/old-question-paper-wbjee/. Solve several years under a timer to see how questions are framed and how the three categories are spread.

Use any mock only as practice. Your real preparation level shows in how consistently your accuracy holds across several full-length attempts.
