WB SET Exam
WB SET Exam is a recruitment exam, relevant to aspirants preparing for teaching and education-sector recruitment.
WB SET is the West Bengal State Eligibility Test, conducted by West Bengal College Service Commission (WBCSC) for Assistant Professor eligibility in West Bengal. It assesses general teaching and research aptitude alongside knowledge of a postgraduate subject. Passing establishes an eligibility condition; it does not allot a college, create a vacancy or issue an appointment letter.
This guide brings the verified cycle, application checks, paper structure, syllabus and preparation decisions into one place. Start with qualification and subject matching, then use the linked pages for a detailed checklist. Where a new detailed notification could not be retrieved, the earlier rules are labelled so that you can prepare without mistaking a historical condition for a newly announced one.

Cycle status and source check
The WBCSC notice dated 10 March 2026 proposes the 28th SET for 13 December 2026, from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm. This is a proposed date. The accessible official notice board also carries the 27th SET result, cut-off and certificate notices. A readable detailed 28th SET advertisement was not retrieved; the rules below are the verified 26th SET baseline and must be checked against the 28th notification before applying.
Research checked on 4 November 2026. Read the official examination notices before making an application or travel decision. A previous-cycle rule is not a substitute for the next detailed notification.
Eligibility and subject choice
Under the verified rules, General/EWS candidates need at least 55% in a recognised master’s degree or equivalent; the prescribed categories receive a 50% threshold. Do not round a lower percentage upward to claim eligibility. The verified earlier advertisement requires the postgraduate subject. If it is not among the offered SET subjects, it directs candidates to UGC-NET or Joint CSIR-UGC NET. The absence of an upper age limit for SET does not remove age conditions in a later Assistant Professor recruitment advertisement.
There is no upper age limit for appearing under the verified SET rules. That rule belongs to this eligibility test. A subsequent employer may apply separate qualifications, age conditions, experience requirements and selection procedures. Read the WB SET eligibility checklist before paying an application fee.
Application checks that prevent avoidable problems
Use the registration link reached from the official examination portal. Check your name against the qualification documents and identity record, choose the correct postgraduate subject and category, and keep a copy of the final confirmation. A bank debit alone is not a complete application: verify the portal’s payment and submission status.
Check | Action before submission |
|---|---|
Qualification | Use the final aggregate and the university’s official conversion method where relevant. |
Subject | Match the exact postgraduate subject with the authority’s offered subjects. |
Category | Read the state-specific certificate and non-creamy-layer conditions. |
Provisional study status | Keep the completion deadline and required percentage in writing. |
Uploads | Follow the current portal’s dimensions, format and size limits. |
Fee | Read the applicable-cycle fee notice; no unverified current fee is quoted here. |
Read the applicable detailed notification and subsequent corrigenda together.
Complete registration with contact details you can continue to access.
Enter qualifications, subject and category using the supporting documents.
Check the payment status and submitted form, then retain the confirmation.
Monitor official notices for admit-card, response-key and certificate instructions.
Important dates: cycle labels matter
Event | Verified date or status |
|---|---|
28th SET short notice | 10 March 2026 |
28th SET proposed examination | 13 December 2026; proposed |
27th SET cut-off publication | 5 March 2026 |
Proposed dates can change. Completed-cycle dates are historical and do not imply that another application window is open. Use a later corrigendum when it supersedes an earlier advertisement.
WB SET exam pattern
Paper | Focus | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
I | Teaching and research aptitude | 50 | 100 | 1 hour |
II | Selected postgraduate subject | 100 | 200 | 2 hours |
Total | Both papers | 150 | 300 | 3 hours of testing |
Keep the 28th SET notice separate from the earlier detailed scheme. A short date announcement does not establish new application fees, registration deadlines, reservation rules or examination instructions. The 27th SET cut-off percentages are historical outcomes, not a promised score for the proposed 28th examination.
Each correct response carries two marks and the verified schemes have no negative marking. Both papers contribute to the aggregate. Read the detailed examination pattern for response handling and scoring examples. Choose preparation material in the language permitted for your subject by the applicable detailed advertisement. Do not assume every subject is available in Bengali merely because the examination is conducted in West Bengal.
What this pattern means for preparation
Keep both papers active: Subject expertise is important, but leaving the common paper until the end creates an avoidable preparation gap.
Practise decisions under time: An objective paper tests whether you can retrieve and apply knowledge quickly, not just recognise a chapter title.
Follow the response format: CBT navigation and OMR marking require different habits. Practise the arrangement relevant to this examination.
Syllabus and selection
Paper I develops teaching and research aptitude, reasoning, comprehension, communication, numerical and data skills, ICT, environment and higher education awareness. Paper II follows the chosen subject’s official syllabus. A short list of chapter names cannot replace the downloadable subject document. Use the complete syllabus planning guide to turn units into a checklist.
The written examination, official answer-key process and result criteria lead to an eligibility decision. Document verification remains material even after a qualifying score. There is no promised job allocation at the end of this guide, and vacancies or salary figures from a separate recruitment notice should not be attached to SET as though they were examination benefits.
Career use: what qualification changes
A qualifying certificate may help satisfy the SET condition when applying for relevant Assistant Professor vacancies in the permitted jurisdiction. Read the employer’s advertisement independently for subject specialisation, academic requirements, reservation, experience and the selection method. Keep the qualification evidence ready rather than assuming the examination result completes recruitment.
SET is not a Junior Research Fellowship award. A fellowship, doctoral admission or a teaching appointment may have a separate route and separate rules. Identify your immediate objective before choosing preparation material: building subject knowledge for SET and building a research application can overlap, but they are different tasks.
How to use a score without misreading it
An examination score answers a different question from an eligibility check. Your postgraduate marks determine whether you may apply; the two-paper result determines whether you satisfy the test criteria. Neither figure guarantees appointment. Keep your academic documents and examination score in separate records so a percentage from one stage is never copied into another.
For practice, record Paper I and Paper II separately even when the official decision uses an aggregate. A total can rise while an important unit remains weak. Compare papers of similar difficulty and avoid treating an easier mock as proof that your preparation has improved. Read the WB SET cut-off guide for the difference between a historical benchmark and a future target.
A preparation plan you can adapt
The following is a suggested study plan, not an official timetable. Change its pace around your starting score, work commitments and the examination notice. Count completed question review alongside study hours; a chapter is not secure simply because a video has been watched.
Diagnose before planning: Read both syllabus documents and attempt a short mixed set without notes. Label each error as missing knowledge, a misunderstood question, weak calculation or avoidable haste. Use that record to choose the next week’s work.
Build concepts in the first phase: Give your postgraduate subject a daily study block and keep a smaller regular block for Paper I. Summarise ideas from memory, solve a few questions and return to the textbook only for gaps you can identify.
Connect units in the middle phase: Mix older and newer topics. Compare similar theories, methods or formulas rather than keeping each chapter isolated. Retest earlier mistakes after a gap so recognition does not masquerade as recall.
Practise the actual paper format: Introduce timed Paper I and Paper II sessions once basic coverage is stable. Use the subject and response format prescribed for WB SET. Reserve time for reviewing answers and, where relevant, OMR alignment.
Reduce repeat errors in the final phase: Prioritise your error log, weak units and official previous papers. Take a full mock only when there is time to analyse it. Avoid replacing a settled resource set with a new collection in the last few days.
On Testkart, evaluate any available WB SET practice tests against this plan and the official scheme before choosing them. Use the study notes guide to keep revision compact. Product availability and included features must be checked on the actual listing.

Testkart resources should support the preparation task you have identified. Check the individual product description, subject, language and access period before relying on it; this guide does not claim that a particular course or test is currently listed.
Choose resources after a small diagnostic
Before choosing a preparation resource, write down the specific gap it should close. A theory course may help when you cannot explain a concept. A question bank may help when explanations are clear but application is slow. A full-length test may help when your unit scores are stable but your performance drops across the complete paper. These are different needs, so a large combined package is not automatically the right starting point.
Try a short sample in your chosen postgraduate subject. Check whether explanations identify why the correct answer follows and why plausible alternatives fail. Compare the content map with the official units. A general teaching aptitude resource cannot replace a subject-specific paper, and a discipline course may not cover the common paper. Read the course selection guide before committing to a study sequence.
Make a weekly review produce a decision
A useful review ends with a change to the next week’s work. Choose one recurring conceptual error, one time-management problem and one neglected unit. Schedule a concrete exercise for each. For example, compare two confused research methods, solve a short set with a clear move-on rule, and read the omitted unit before taking another full paper. The exercise should be small enough to complete and specific enough to check.
Keep your administrative checklist separate from your learning checklist. Checking a notice, resolving qualification equivalence and downloading an admit card are necessary tasks, but they do not improve subject recall by themselves. Equally, a strong mock score does not fix an unsupported category claim. Reviewing both lists prevents progress in one area from hiding an unresolved issue in the other.
