WB SET Eligibility: Official Rules and Study Guide

WB SET eligibility should be checked before you register, pay a fee or choose a subject course. The verified rules cover a recognised postgraduate qualification, the required marks, subject selection and category-specific conditions. Being able to submit an online form or download an admit card does not itself prove that your qualifications satisfy the authority.

This guide separates the marks needed to apply from the marks needed in the examination and from the conditions of a later teaching appointment. Read the cycle status first: rules from an earlier detailed advertisement are labelled where the next full notification was not available. Use your own certificates and final marks record when checking a condition; a friend’s eligibility or a course provider’s assurance is not evidence for your application.

The WBCSC notice dated 10 March 2026 proposes the 28th SET for 13 December 2026, from 10:30 am to 2:00 pm. This is a proposed date. The accessible official notice board also carries the 27th SET result, cut-off and certificate notices. A readable detailed 28th SET advertisement was not retrieved; the rules below are the verified 26th SET baseline and must be checked against the 28th notification before applying.

Research checked on 4 November 2026. Read the official examination notices before making an application or travel decision. A previous-cycle rule is not a substitute for the next detailed notification.

Educational qualification: check recognition and the final aggregate

Start with the awarding institution and the exact name of the qualification. A master’s degree, a postgraduate diploma and a certificate are not automatically interchangeable. The official eligibility pages direct candidates with specified Indian diplomas or foreign qualifications to establish equivalence, including through the Association of Indian Universities where required. Obtain the relevant evidence before relying on the equivalence.

General/EWS applicants need the prescribed 55% minimum, while OBC non-creamy-layer, SC, ST, PwD and transgender categories under the verified earlier advertisement have the 50% threshold described in the verified source. Use the authority’s exact category wording rather than assuming every reservation label carries the same concession. A qualification percentage below the stated threshold cannot be made eligible merely by rounding it to the next integer.

Percentage and grade conversion

If your university issues grades or CGPA, use its official conversion method and retain the supporting rule or certificate. Do not use an online conversion formula merely because it produces a convenient percentage. Record the calculation and the final figure exactly as the application asks. If the notification is unclear about your grading system, seek clarification from the authority before declaring eligibility.

Example for understanding only

What to check

General/EWS aggregate is 54.9%

A no-rounding rule does not permit treating this as 55%.

A reserved-category applicant has 50%

Check that the claimed category and required certificate are accepted.

A transcript reports only CGPA

Obtain the awarding institution’s conversion rule.

A postgraduate diploma is held

Check the required equivalence evidence; do not assume parity.

Category relaxation and certificate checks

A mark relaxation and a reservation benefit are related but distinct. Read which categories qualify, which state certificates are valid and whether a current non-creamy-layer or other certificate is required. Check the name, issuing authority, validity and category on the actual document before selecting the application field.

MH SET explicitly limits reservation benefits to the eligible domicile categories of Maharashtra and Goa and directs reserved-category candidates from other states to use the General category. APSET’s application instructions state that Andhra Pradesh Government reservation rules and the accepted state certificates apply. For WB SET, use the applicable detailed advertisement and current government rules rather than copying another state’s category treatment.

Build a category evidence record

Keep a short list of the benefit claimed, the rule supporting it and the document proving it. This makes a mismatch visible before submission. If a certificate is pending, a receipt for applying for it is not automatically an accepted substitute. Use only a substitution or undertaking expressly allowed by the authority.

Final-year and result-awaited applicants

The APSET eligibility page and the MH SET eligibility page permit specified provisional applicants, subject to completing the master’s qualification with the required marks within two years of the SET result. The verified earlier WB SET advertisement has a corresponding two-year condition. Provisional admission therefore defers proof; it does not waive the qualification or reduce the required marks.

The verified earlier advertisement requires the postgraduate subject. If it is not among the offered SET subjects, it directs candidates to UGC-NET or Joint CSIR-UGC NET. The absence of an upper age limit for SET does not remove age conditions in a later Assistant Professor recruitment advertisement.

Put the actual deadline in a personal tracker once the relevant result date is known. Record expected final results, pending assessments and the certificate issuing process. If a programme is delayed, read the authority’s rules and any subsequent clarification rather than assuming the original provisional permission continues indefinitely.

Subject selection: academic matching comes before product choice

Read the offered subject list next to the postgraduate qualification on your marksheets. Similar names can cover different curricula, and a preparation course accepting enrolment does not establish examination eligibility. Where the authority specifies a related or equivalent subject route, follow that instruction and retain supporting evidence. Where it directs candidates to another examination instead, do not substitute your own interpretation.

The WB SET syllabus page helps organise the subject document after you establish the correct paper. Do not buy a subject course first and try to fit your qualification to it later. If the exact mapping is uncertain, ask the examination authority a narrow question naming the degree, awarding institution and proposed subject.

Age limit, attempts and later recruitment

There is no upper age limit for appearing under the checked SET rules. This removes the need for an age-relaxation table for this examination; it does not remove a later employer’s age condition. Do not copy a Junior Research Fellowship age rule into a SET Assistant Professor eligibility page.

The available evidence should also control repeat attempts. In particular, MH SET’s current eligibility page says a person already qualified in the same subject may not appear again in it. Do not convert the absence of a general age limit into a claim of unlimited permission to repeat every paper. Check any specific restriction before registering.

Category

Application

Subject and category fields match the supporting records

Keep legible copies in one folder and preserve the submitted application. Documents needed later are still relevant now, even when the authority does not ask applicants to post certificates during registration. Acceptance of the form remains provisional where the notification says so; a later check can invalidate an unsupported claim.

Who should pause before submitting

  • Below the required marks: Recheck the official aggregate and applicable relaxation instead of rounding or changing the denominator.

  • Uncertain subject match: Establish the permitted paper before registering; do not rely on a broad commercial subject label.

  • Incomplete qualification outside the permitted stage: Read the provisional rule closely and distinguish final-year permission from unrestricted admission of all students.

  • Unsupported category claim: Resolve the certificate or state-rule mismatch before selecting the category.

  • Assuming SET equals employment: Read the later recruitment advertisement separately for the post you want.

After eligibility is clear

Use the exam pattern page to understand the two-paper task, then choose learning resources around specific gaps. For available Testkart courses, compare subject coverage, language and sample teaching before paying. No course can waive an examination condition or promise acceptance of an ineligible application.

Before the next cycle, repeat this WB SET eligibility audit with the newly issued notification. Testkart notes and practice can support preparation once the application route is sound; the official authority remains the source for eligibility decisions. Keep any unresolved personal qualification question separate from a general preparation timetable.

Resolve a personal qualification doubt with evidence

If your case does not fit the ordinary qualification route, collect the relevant facts before asking for clarification: exact degree title, awarding institution, year, aggregate or grade, recognition evidence and intended paper. Quote the specific eligibility condition that creates the doubt. A focused question is easier for the authority to answer than a general request asking whether all postgraduate degrees are accepted.

Keep the response with your application records and still check the final detailed notification. A preparation timetable can continue while you gather documents, but do not turn an unresolved personal case into a general statement that a degree is accepted. The same caution applies when advising another candidate: similar course names can conceal different recognition or equivalence questions.
