XAT 2027 Exam Pattern: Sections, Marking Scheme and Time Strategy

The XAT 2027 exam pattern has about 95 questions across four sections, answered in 180 minutes on 3 January 2027. XLRI Jamshedpur conducts the exam as a computer-based test in a single slot, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Two rules make XAT different from most MBA tests: a penalty for leaving too many questions unanswered, and a General Knowledge section that does not count in your percentile.

This page explains the structure of each part, the exact marking and skip rules, what the pattern means for your attempt strategy, and how to split your time on exam day. All figures come from the official XAT website. Questions per section are listed there as approximate, so small changes on exam day are possible.

Key Changes to Know

  • No essay listed: The XAT 2027 pattern on the official website has four sections and no essay. Older pages may still show an essay task, so follow the official pattern.

  • Calculator inside the interface: The official FAQ confirms a built-in scientific calculator.

  • Same skip and GK rules: The skip penalty and the rule that GK does not count in the percentile continue in 2027.

The official FAQ says there are no sectional time limits. You can start with any section and move between sections at any point within the 170 minutes. Your XAT percentile is calculated on these three sections.

GK has no negative marking. It does not count towards your overall percentile or cut-off, but XLRI considers it in selection for its own programmes. If XLRI is on your list, do not treat GK as optional.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

  • Correct answer: +1 mark in every section.

  • Wrong answer in Part 1: minus 0.25 marks.

  • Wrong answer in GK: no deduction.

  • Unanswered questions: the first 8 are free. Each further unanswered question costs 0.1 marks.

The skip penalty is calculated from the official rule. Third-party analysis indicates it applies to the combined Part 1 pool, not to each section separately; confirm this in the instructions on your admit card or exam screen.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • A wrong guess costs more than a skip: A wrong answer costs 0.25, while a skip beyond the 8th costs 0.1. Guess only when you can eliminate at least two of the options.

  • Use your 8 free skips well: Leave the lengthiest or most uncertain questions, usually a heavy DI set or a dense passage, rather than scattered easy ones.

  • Balance across sections: XLRI shortlists on sectional percentiles as well as overall, so a very low score in one section can cost a call even with a good total.

  • Time is the real constraint: About 2.3 minutes per Part 1 question sounds generous, but XAT reading and DM cases are long. Plan time by section, not by question.

Selection Stages After XAT

XAT is the first stage. Institutes shortlist on XAT percentiles and then run their own rounds, usually a personal interview and, at some institutes, a group discussion or written task. Final selection combines XAT performance with interview, academics, work experience and diversity factors, with weightages set by each institute. Read the admission policy of every institute you apply to.

Time Management on Exam Day

Section

Suggested time

Approach

Decision Making

45 to 50 minutes

Start here if DM is your strength; read each case once, carefully

VALR

55 to 60 minutes

Pick passages by length and topic; do critical reasoning first

QA-DI

60 to 65 minutes

First pass for direct questions, second pass for longer sets

GK

10 minutes

Answer every question you have a reasonable idea of; there is no penalty

This split is a suggested starting point, not an official rule. Test it in at least three full mocks and adjust to your strengths before exam day.
