No essay in the listed pattern: Earlier XAT papers included an essay. The XAT 2027 pattern on the official website lists only four sections and about 95 questions, with no essay. Older pages may still show the essay, so follow the official pattern.
Built-in scientific calculator: The official FAQ says a scientific calculator is available inside the exam interface.
New participating institutes: XLRI has announced new XAT associate institutes for 2027 and a new XAMI member, the Xavier Institute of Management and Informatics, Jaipur.
XAT 2027 Eligibility
Educational qualification
You need a recognised bachelor's degree of at least three years, or its equivalent, in any discipline. Candidates in the final year of graduation can apply if they complete their final examinations by 11 June 2027. The official FAQ does not set a minimum percentage for appearing in XAT, but individual institutes may set their own academic criteria for admission.
Age limit
The official XAT FAQ does not state any age limit for appearing in the exam. Check each institute's admission policy if you are applying with long work experience or to an executive programme.
Nationality and other conditions
Indian candidates: All Indian candidates must take XAT 2027 to apply to XLRI's XAT-based programmes.
NRI, foreign, PIO and OCI candidates: These candidates may apply to XLRI through GMAT scores instead of XAT.
Work experience: Only full-time experience gained after graduation is counted. Internships and articleships are not.
For the full rules on percentage entry, integrated courses and documents, see the XAT eligibility criteria page.
Application Fee and How to Apply
Category | Fee |

Steps to apply
Register: Create an account on the XAT application portal with a working email and mobile number.
Fill personal details: Enter your name and your parents' names exactly as they appear on certificates and ID proof. A mismatch can lead to disqualification.
Add academic and work details: Enter aggregate marks and full-time post-graduation work experience.
Choose programmes and test cities: Select XLRI programmes if you want them, and pick up to six test cities.
Upload photo and signature: Use a recent colour photo and a signature in black ink on white paper.
Preview, pay and submit: Details cannot be edited after submission and payment, so check every field first. Save the e-receipt and a copy of the form.
If no e-receipt appears after payment, the official page treats the payment as failed, so log in again and retry. The full process is on the XAT registration page.
XAT 2027 Exam Pattern
XAT has two parts. Part 1 has three aptitude sections that share 170 minutes, and Part 2 is General Knowledge with 10 minutes. There is no separate time limit for each section in Part 1, so you can move between VALR, DM and QA-DI in any order.
Section | Questions (approx.) | Time |
|---|---|---|
Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR) | 26 | 170 minutes shared across Part 1 |
Decision Making (DM) | 21 | Shared with VALR and QA-DI |
Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA-DI) | 28 | Shared with VALR and DM |
General Knowledge (GK) | 20 | 10 minutes |
Total | 95 | 180 minutes |
Marking scheme
Correct answer: 1 mark.
Wrong answer: 0.25 marks deducted in Part 1. GK has no negative marking.
Skipped questions: You can leave up to 8 questions without penalty. Each skipped question after the 8th costs 0.1 marks.
GK and the percentile: GK does not count towards your overall percentile or cut-off, but XLRI considers it in selection for its own programmes.
What this means for you
Do not skip freely: Leaving 20 questions blank costs 1.2 marks, so plan to attempt at least 67 of the 75 Part 1 questions, guessing only where you can eliminate options.
Balance matters: XLRI shortlists on sectional as well as overall percentiles, so one weak section can cost you a call.
Treat GK as separate: It does not affect your percentile, but it matters if you want XLRI.
Read the full breakdown on the XAT exam pattern page.
XAT Syllabus Summary
XLRI describes what each section covers but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The table below is built from the official section descriptions and past papers.
Section | Important topics |
|---|---|
VALR | Reading comprehension (including poems and cartoons), critical reasoning, vocabulary, grammar, para jumbles, cloze tests |
Decision Making | Personal and workplace dilemmas, ethics, prioritisation, stakeholder analysis, data-based decisions |
QA-DI | Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number system, modern maths, tables and charts |
GK | About 8 static GK and 12 current affairs questions |
Selection Process
XAT score: Institutes use your XAT percentile to shortlist. XLRI applies both overall and sectional percentile cut-offs.
Institute rounds: Shortlisted candidates go through personal interviews and, at some institutes, group discussions or written tasks.
Final merit: Institutes combine XAT performance, interview performance, academics, work experience and diversity factors. Weightages differ by institute and are published in each institute's admission policy.
For XLRI programmes, read the official XLRI admission prospectus for 2027 linked on the XAT website before your interview preparation starts.
Institutes That Accept XAT
The XAMI members include XLRI Jamshedpur, XIM University Bhubaneswar, LIBA Chennai, XIME Bengaluru, XIMR Mumbai, Xavier Business School Kolkata, St. Joseph's Institute of Management Bengaluru and the Xavier Institute of Social Service Ranchi, among others. Associate institutes listed on the official site include FORE School of Management, MICA, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Goa Institute of Management, TAPMI and BITS Pilani. Each institute sets its own cut-off and process.
XLRI Cut-off Reference
Programme (Jamshedpur) | XAT 2026 overall percentile | XAT 2025 overall percentile |
|---|---|---|
BM, male candidates | 94 and above | 96 and above |
BM, female candidates | 88 and above | 91 and above |
HRM, engineer male | 92 and above | 95 and above |
HRM, non-engineer female | 84 and above | 87 and above |
These are shortlisting cut-offs released by XLRI and reported by education news sites. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty and the number of applicants, so treat them as a benchmark and aim for a clear margin above them.
How to Prepare for XAT 2027
With the exam in early January, most aspirants have about 12 weeks left. A practical plan looks like this:
Weeks 1 to 4, concepts: Revise arithmetic and algebra, read one long editorial a day, and solve 5 to 8 Decision Making cases daily with written reasons for each answer.
Weeks 5 to 8, sectional practice: Take 30 to 40 minute sectional tests for VALR, DM and QA-DI, and start a daily 20 minute current affairs routine for GK.
Weeks 9 to 12, full mocks: Take two to three full-length mocks a week in the exact 170 plus 10 minute format, and practise attempt discipline with the skip penalty in mind.
Final week: Revise your error log, solve one recent official paper, and avoid new topics.
