Ambala Institute of Hotel Management Entrance Exam
AIHM entrance exam preparation: syllabus, exam pattern, and practice questions for hotel management and hospitality admissions. Start preparing today.
AIHM Study Material
Searching for the AIHM entrance exam can be confusing, because "AIHM" is the short name of more than one hotel management institute in India. Most students mean the Ambala Institute of Hotel Management in Haryana or the Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management in Chandigarh. A smaller group is looking for the Army Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology in Bengaluru. Each institute has its own admission route, and that route decides which exam you must prepare for.
This guide explains which exam applies to which AIHM, what the NCHM JEE looks like in its latest cycle, who can apply, how the paper is structured and how to prepare. For the topic-wise breakdown, use the AIHM syllabus page. Dates for the next cycle are marked tentative until the National Testing Agency (NTA) notifies them.

Which AIHM Are You Looking For?
The same four letters point to different institutes. Check the row that matches your target before you plan your preparation.
Institute | Location | How admission works |
|---|---|---|
Ambala Institute of Hotel Management (AIHM Ambala) | Ambala, Haryana | Listed as a private institute affiliated to NCHMCT. B.Sc (HHA) admission is through the NCHM JEE score. |
Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition (AIHM Chandigarh) | Chandigarh | A Central Institute of Hotel Management affiliated to NCHMCT. Admission is through NCHM JEE counselling. Residual seats follow the institute's own notices. |
Army Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (AIHMCT) | Bengaluru, Karnataka | Runs its own Written Admission Test (WAT) and is meant for the Army community. Confirm the current rules with the institute. |
AIHM, Noida | Noida, Uttar Pradesh | Does not appear in the list of institutes taking B.Sc (HHA) admissions through NCHM JEE 2026. Admission is handled by the institute, so contact it directly. |
If you are unsure which institute a website or counsellor is talking about, ask for the full institute name and check its own admission notice before you pay any fee.
Is There a Separate AIHM Entrance Exam?
For the Ambala and Chandigarh institutes, there is no exam set by the institute itself. Both appear in the list of affiliated institutes in the NCHM JEE 2026 information bulletin, where AIHM Chandigarh is shown as a Central IHM and Ambala Institute of Hotel Management, Haryana as a private IHM. The bulletin states that the NCHM JEE score is accepted by all affiliated institutes for the B.Sc (HHA) course. So the exam you prepare for is the NCHM JEE, which the NTA conducts on behalf of the National Council for Hotel Management and Catering Technology (NCHMCT).
Qualifying in the exam does not guarantee a seat. The bulletin says selection depends on the admission criteria, your rank in the merit list, medical fitness and verification of original documents.

Latest Cycle and What to Expect Next
The 2026 cycle
The NCHM JEE 2026 was held on 25 April 2026 in computer-based mode. The NTA later displayed provisional answer keys for challenges, published the final answer keys and declared the result through public notices in May 2026. Application dates were extended during the cycle, and the NTA notices carry the exact revised dates.
The 2027 cycle
As of 20 October 2026, the NTA portal shows only 2026 notices and no 2027 notification. Third-party estimates suggest a notification around December 2026 and an exam around April 2027. Treat these as tentative.
Tentative dates come from past cycles and can change. Track the official NTA page and your registered email for the final schedule.
The pattern is worth checking once more. Several coaching and college directory pages still show an older format of 200 questions in three hours. The official 2026 bulletin lists 120 questions in 120 minutes, so follow the bulletin.
Eligibility
The conditions below come from the 2026 bulletin. Read the bulletin of the cycle you are applying for, because rules can change.
Educational qualification
Class 12 with English: You must have passed 10+2 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board, with English studied as a subject (core, elective or functional).
Result awaited: Students appearing in Class 12 can apply on a provisional basis. Proof of passing had to be submitted by 30 September in the 2026 cycle, at counselling or admission.
Equivalent qualifications: The bulletin accepts several, including Intermediate or Pre-University, GCE A Level, and NIOS senior secondary with at least five subjects including English.
Age limit and physical fitness
There is no age restriction for the NCHM JEE. Selected candidates must submit a physical fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner at the time of admission, because the course includes practical classes such as cooking, food and beverage service and housekeeping.
Reservation
Category | Seats in Central institutes |
|---|---|
Scheduled Castes | 15% |
Scheduled Tribes | 7.5% |
OBC (non-creamy layer, Central list) | 27% |
General-EWS | 10% |
Each category also carries 5% reservation for candidates with benchmark disability of 40% or more who can carry out the required practicals. Institutes run or aided by state governments follow their state's reservation policy. For a private institute such as AIHM Ambala, check the institute's admission notice.
Application Fee and How to Apply
The fees below are for the 2026 cycle. Service charges and GST are extra and paid to the payment gateway.
Category | Fee (2026 cycle) |
|---|---|
General (UR) and OBC (NCL) | Rs. 1,000 |
General-EWS | Rs. 700 |
SC, ST, PwD and Third Gender | Rs. 450 |
Applications are online only, through the NTA portal.
Register: Use your own email address and mobile number, and note the system-generated application number.
Fill the form and upload documents: Add a recent photograph in JPG format (10 KB to 200 KB), your signature and certificates, if applicable, as per the size limits in the bulletin. You will also choose four exam cities.
Pay the fee: Pay online and download the confirmation page. The form stays incomplete until payment succeeds.
Avoid the common mistakes the bulletin warns about. Do not enter a coaching centre's or internet cafe's email or phone number, do not submit more than one application, and choose your category carefully, because changes are not allowed after the correction window.
Exam Pattern
The NCHM JEE has one paper with five sections. Each question carries 4 marks, so the paper is out of 480.
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
Numerical Ability and Analytical Aptitude | 15 | 60 |
Reasoning and Logical Deduction | 15 | 60 |
General Knowledge and Current Affairs | 15 | 60 |
English Language | 45 | 180 |
Aptitude for Service Sector | 30 | 120 |
Total | 120 | 480 |
What this means for you
English decides the paper: It carries 37.5% of the marks. English and the service sector section together make up 62.5%.
One minute per question: You have 120 minutes for 120 questions, so speed matters as much as accuracy.
Guess with care: A wrong answer costs 1 mark against 4 for a right one. Guess only after you can remove options, not blindly.
Order is your choice: The computer-based format lets you move between sections and questions, so start with your strongest section.
Syllabus Summary
The NTA bulletin names the five sections and the number of questions but does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The topics below are indicative. They are built from the section names and from the question types candidates commonly report, so use them as a working checklist, not as an official list.
Section | Indicative topics | Start with |
|---|---|---|
English Language | Reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction | Grammar rules and daily reading |
Numerical Ability | Percentages, ratio, average, profit and loss, time and work, data interpretation | Percentages and ratio |
Reasoning | Series, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, syllogism | Series and coding-decoding |
General Knowledge and Current Affairs | Current events, static GK, tourism and hospitality awareness | Monthly current affairs notes |
Aptitude for Service Sector | Situational judgement, customer handling, etiquette, hotel departments | Hotel departments and situation-based questions |
The B.Sc (HHA) Programme
The NCHM JEE leads to the three-year, six-semester B.Sc (Hospitality and Hotel Administration). According to the bulletin, the programme involves in-depth laboratory work in Food Production, Food and Beverage Service and Rooms Division. It also adds managerial inputs such as hospitality marketing, financial management, human resource management and revenue management. As per NEP 2020, the bulletin says there may be an option of a fourth year for an Honours degree.
If you want the semester-wise course syllabus rather than the entrance syllabus, the AIHM Chandigarh website publishes its B.Sc semester syllabus on its official syllabus page. Affiliated institutes follow the curriculum prescribed by NCHMCT.
How to Prepare
Build your plan around the marks
Give English the most time, then the service sector section, then split the remaining effort across numerical ability, reasoning and current affairs. Fix the basics first. Most questions in this paper test fundamentals, not tricks.
Practise in the real format
The paper is computer-based, timed and negatively marked, so practise the same way. You can attempt AIHM entrance mock tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to see where marks are leaking. Start with sectional tests, then move to full 120-minute papers. Pair them with the official mock tests NTA offers for hands-on practice of the interface.
Review every attempt
After each test, note wrong answers, slow questions and questions you skipped but could have solved. Keep these in an error log and revisit it weekly. Candidates who analyse mistakes usually improve faster than those who only take more tests.
