AIHM Exam Pattern 2027: NCHM JEE Marks, Sections and Timing

Students searching for the AIHM exam pattern are usually looking at admission to the B.Sc. (Hospitality & Hotel Administration) programme at Ambala Institute of Hotel Management (AIHM), Ambala. Seats in this programme are filled through the National Council for Hotel Management Joint Entrance Examination (NCHM JEE), held by the National Testing Agency (NTA), followed by counselling run by NCHMCT. The paper you actually sit for, and the pattern that matters, is therefore the NCHM JEE pattern.

This page explains that pattern section by section: questions, marks, timing, negative marking and a practical way to spend your two hours. It follows the latest official pattern, from the NTA information bulletin for NCHM JEE 2026. As of 20 October 2026, the NTA NCHM JEE page lists only 2026 notices, so treat any change for 2027 as unconfirmed until a new bulletin appears.

Note: AIHM's website links an "Entrance Test Details" letter dated August 2024, but its contents could not be read for this page, and no separate AIHM-conducted paper with its own published pattern could be verified. If you plan to apply directly to the institute, confirm any institute-level test with AIHM at 7082309777 or 8950077977, or by email at [email protected].

How AIHM Admission Works

AIHM is a private institute affiliated to NCHMCT, so it does not set its own nationwide paper for the B.Sc. programme. The route runs in three steps:

  • Apply and appear: You register with NTA and take NCHM JEE in the computer-based format.

  • Score and rank: NTA declares the result and passes the scores to NCHMCT.

  • Counselling: NCHMCT runs centralised counselling, and seats at affiliated institutes, including AIHM, are allotted on rank and the choices you fill.

The bulletin is clear that appearing in and passing the test does not give a right to admission. Selection also depends on your rank, eligibility, medical fitness and document verification.

Section-Wise Pattern and Marks

The paper has five sections. Every question carries 4 marks, so the marks for each section follow directly from its question count.

English and Aptitude for Service Sector together make up 75 of the 120 questions, which is 300 of the 480 marks, or 62.5% of the paper. That split should decide where most of your study hours go.

What each section typically tests

The bulletin names the five sections but does not publish a topic list. The descriptions below are a working guide based on how these sections are generally described, not an official syllabus.

  • English Language: grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction and reading comprehension. It is the largest section and the one where rank differences are often made.

  • Aptitude for Service Sector: situational and judgement-style questions about guests, teamwork and workplace behaviour in hospitality.

  • Numerical Ability and Analytical Aptitude: arithmetic and data-based questions at school level.

  • Reasoning and Logical Deduction: verbal and logical reasoning, including series, arrangements and deductions.

  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs: static general knowledge and recent events, with some weight on tourism and hospitality.

Full marks to all candidates

Two rules from the bulletin are easy to miss:

  • Revised answer keys: If a question has more than one correct option or its key changes after challenges, only candidates who answered it correctly as per the revised key receive the marks.

  • Review marking: In the CBT, a question that is answered and also marked for review is evaluated. A question marked for review without an answer is not.

How negative marking affects your score

The table below shows how three attempts with different accuracy compare.

B

C

20

340

Candidates A and B both answered 80 questions correctly, but B skipped ten shaky questions and finished 10 marks ahead. Candidate C attempted the most and scored the most, because accuracy stayed high. The lesson is not to attempt less, but to attempt only what you can reason through.

A simple rule of thumb follows from the numbers. A guess pays off when your chance of being right is above 20 percent, since each right answer earns four times what a wrong one costs. An informed guess after removing one or two options is a sound decision. Random guessing with no reasoning is not a plan.

Time Plan for the 120 Minutes

With 120 questions in 120 minutes, you have one minute per question on average. The bulletin does not set separate timers for sections, and candidates can move between sections during the paper. That freedom is useful only if you have a plan, so decide your order before exam day.

The split below is a suggested starting plan, not an official one. Adjust it after your first few full-length attempts.

English Language

35 minutes

45 questions, with reading passages that need steady attention

Aptitude for Service Sector

Numerical Ability

General Knowledge

What Changed From the Older Pattern

Many education portals still describe the paper as it stood in earlier years. The 2026 bulletin sets a shorter, lighter paper.

Older pages may still show the 200-question, three-hour format, so follow the NTA bulletin for the current pattern. Marks per question and the negative marking rule did not change, so accuracy habits you build now carry over.

What the Pattern Means for Your Preparation

  • English decides the paper: At 180 of 480 marks, it carries more than any other section. Read one English article daily, revise grammar rules by topic and build vocabulary in short daily sets.

  • Service aptitude rewards judgement: It carries 120 marks and needs no formula. Practise situational questions by asking what a calm, guest-focused professional would do, and avoid answers that sound rude or careless.

  • Three short sections add up: Numerical, reasoning and GK together carry 180 marks across 45 questions. Each is small, so steady revision of basics works better than deep specialisation.

  • Accuracy beats volume: Each wrong answer costs a quarter of what a right one earns. Track your accuracy by section, not only your total score.

A workable eight-week routine looks like this:

  1. Weeks 1 to 3: Daily English reading and grammar, basic arithmetic revision, and 20 minutes of general knowledge and current affairs reading.

  2. Weeks 4 to 6: Section-wise tests, situational question sets for service aptitude, and monthly current affairs notes.

  3. Weeks 7 and 8: Full-length papers of 120 questions in 120 minutes once or twice a week, same-day analysis and revision from an error log.

Practise in the Real Format

The NCHM JEE bulletin says sample and mock tests for hands-on practice are available on the NTA website, and the NTA exam portal links its NTA Abhyas practice platform. Check there for NCHM JEE material once the 2027 notice is out, because this is the closest you can get to the live interface.

NTA does not publish an AIHM-specific mock test, since AIHM admission runs on NCHM JEE.

Exam-Day Rules That Affect Your Paper

These points come from the 2026 bulletin. Re-check the admit card and the new bulletin for your own cycle.

  • Reporting time: Entry to the centre is not allowed after 9:30 AM for an 11:00 AM paper, so plan to arrive early.

  • Documents: Carry the printed admit card with the self-declaration, one original valid government photo ID, and an extra photograph for the attendance sheet.

  • Prohibited items: Calculators, mobile phones, smartwatches and written or printed material are not allowed. Rough work is done on sheets provided at the centre, which you hand back.

  • Language: Choose English or Hindi carefully in the application form. If a translation is unclear, the English version is treated as final.

  • After the exam: NTA displays recorded responses and the provisional answer key. Challenging a key costs Rs. 200 per question.
