Teaching Exams

Assam TET

Assam TET is a recruitment exam, relevant to aspirants preparing for teaching and education-sector recruitment.

Assam TET (Assam Teacher Eligibility Test) is the state-level eligibility test for anyone who wants to teach in elementary schools in Assam. It has two papers: Paper I for Lower Primary (Classes I to V) and Paper II for Upper Primary (Classes VI to VIII). The test is conducted by the State Level Empowered Committee, TET, Government of Assam, under Section 23 of the RTE Act 2009 and NCTE guidelines. Applications and admit cards are handled through ASSEB Division-I (erstwhile SEBA) at sebaonline.org.

The latest cycle is a Special Assam TET, held on 28 June 2026 for Bodo, Garo, Manipuri and Hmar medium schools. No regular, all-medium Assam TET has been held since October 2021. This page covers the official pattern, eligibility, fee, qualifying marks and how TET marks are used in recruitment, so you can plan for the next cycle with the correct rules.

Special Assam TET and Regular Assam TET

Many pages call every Assam teacher exam "Assam TET", which causes confusion. Three different tests carry similar names, and only the first two are covered on this page.

  • Regular Assam TET: The all-medium LP and UP eligibility test. It was last held on 31 October 2021, with Language I options in Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Bodo, Manipuri, Garo, Karbi and Hmar. A new regular cycle has not been announced.

  • Special Assam TET: The same LP and UP test, held to fill a shortage of Language-1 teachers in Bodo, Garo, Manipuri and Hmar medium schools. Language I is offered only in these four languages.

  • TET cum Recruitment Test (secondary): A separate recruitment exam for Graduate and Post Graduate Teachers in secondary schools, run by the Directorate of Secondary Education. It is not the elementary Assam TET.

For the next regular cycle, the structure is likely to stay close to the latest rules, since the 2021 regular and the latest special papers share the same design. Confirm every detail against the new notification when it is released.

Assam TET Eligibility

Every candidate must be a permanent resident of Assam and must hold the NCTE minimum qualification for the paper. The main routes in the latest advertisement are:

  • Paper I (Lower Primary): Senior Secondary with at least 50% plus a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education, a 4-year B.El.Ed or a 2-year D.Ed (Special Education); or Graduation plus a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education.

  • Paper II (Upper Primary): Graduation plus a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education; Graduation with at least 50% plus B.Ed; Post Graduation with at least 55% plus the 3-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed; or a 4-year B.El.Ed, B.A.Ed or B.Sc.Ed after Senior Secondary with at least 50%.

  • Relaxation: SC, ST, OBC, MOBC and PWD(PH) candidates get up to 5% relaxation in the HSSLC or graduation percentage.

The latest advertisement does not list Graduation plus B.Ed as a route for Paper I, although the 2021 advertisement did. Older pages may still show it, so follow the official notification. The full list, including special education routes, is on the Assam TET eligibility criteria page.

Application Fee and How to Apply

The fee is charged per paper. A candidate who takes both papers applies and pays twice, and the fee is not refunded.

  4. Select one centre district. In the latest cycle the options were Cachar, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, Hojai and Sonitpur.

Incomplete forms are rejected, and requests for correction are not accepted. Check every entry before you submit.

In the latest cycle the question paper was offered in Assamese, Bengali, Bodo and English. What this means for you:

  • Attempt every question: With no negative marking, a blank answer can only cost you marks.

  • Do not neglect Language I: In the latest cycle it carried its own pass mark, so a weak Language I score can fail an otherwise strong paper.

  • Plan for 1 minute per question: 150 questions in 150 minutes leaves little room, so pedagogy questions need quick recognition.

Section-wise rules are explained on the Assam TET exam pattern page.

Assam TET Qualifying Marks

After Qualifying: Recruitment, CTET and Pay

Qualifying Assam TET does not give a job. It makes you eligible for teacher recruitment by the Directorate of Elementary Education (DEE), Assam, which is a separate process. The figures below are from the DEE Lower Primary advertisement of 8 January 2025.

  • No written recruitment exam: Selection is by a merit list for each district and category.

  • TET marks decide most of the merit: TET marks carry 85% of the merit score, with 5% each for Higher Secondary and D.El.Ed marks. A high TET score matters far more than a bare pass.

  • CTET is accepted: Candidates qualified in Assam TET or CTET for the matching level can apply. Language I or Language II must match the medium of the school.

  • Age limit at recruitment: 18 to 40 years for the unreserved category as on 1 January 2025, with higher limits for OBC/MOBC (43), SC/ST (45) and PwD (50).

  • Pay: Pay Band 2, Rs. 14,000 to Rs. 70,000, plus grade pay and allowances under the Assam Service (Revision of Pay) Rules.

Recruitment rules and vacancies change with each advertisement, so check dee.assam.gov.in for the current one.

How to Prepare for Assam TET

Because TET marks drive recruitment merit, aim well above 90 rather than for a bare pass. A practical sequence:

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: Cover Child Development and Pedagogy unit by unit, using the official marks split to decide where to spend time.

  2. Weeks 3 to 8: Add your subject sections. For Paper I, focus on numbers, geometry and the EVS units. For Paper II, cover your chosen stream and the Assam-specific Social Science topics.

  3. Throughout: Practise Language I and English pedagogy weekly, since both carry method questions as well as grammar.

  4. Final weeks: Take full-length timed papers of 150 questions in 150 minutes, then revise from an error log.

For timed practice, you can attempt teaching exam online tests on Testkart and use the section-wise analysis to find weak areas in pedagogy and language. Pair this with the official question booklets released after the latest exam on the ASSEB portal to understand the real difficulty level.
