Assam TET Eligibility: Qualification Guide
Assam TET eligibility rests on two conditions: you must be a permanent resident of Assam, and you must hold the minimum academic and professional qualification set by NCTE for the paper you choose. Paper I is for teachers of Classes I to V, and Paper II for Classes VI to VIII. The rules below come from the official advertisement for the latest Special Assam TET, notified by the State Level Empowered Committee, TET, Government of Assam.
This page lists every qualification route for both papers, the relaxation for reserved categories and the facts on age limits. It also notes where the latest rules differ from the 2021 regular TET, because several pages still show the older routes.

Residence Requirement
Only permanent residents of Assam can apply for Assam TET. Proof of permanent residence is not checked when you sit the exam, but it is required when you apply for a teaching post. In the DEE Assam recruitment of January 2025, a document supporting permanent residence was part of the mandatory upload list.
Paper I Eligibility (Lower Primary)
For Classes I to V, a candidate needs any one of these combinations.
Academic qualification | Professional qualification |
|---|---|
Senior Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks | 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known) |
Senior Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks | 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) |
Senior Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks | 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education) |
Graduation | 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known) |
The 2021 advertisement also accepted Graduation with at least 50% plus B.Ed for Paper I, with a 6-month bridge course after appointment. The latest advertisement does not list this route. Older pages may still show it, so follow the official notification of the cycle you apply for.
Paper II Eligibility (Upper Primary)
For Classes VI to VIII, a candidate needs any one of these combinations.
Academic qualification | Professional qualification |
|---|---|
Graduation | 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (by whatever name known) |
Graduation with at least 50% marks | B.Ed |
Post Graduation or equivalent grade with at least 55% marks | 3-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed |
Senior Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks | 4-year B.El.Ed |
Senior Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks | 4-year B.A./B.Sc.Ed or B.A.Ed/B.Sc.Ed |
Graduation with at least 50% marks | 1-year B.Ed (Special Education) |
The minimum percentage in graduation does not apply to candidates who were admitted to a B.Ed, B.El.Ed or equivalent course before 29 July 2011.
Relaxation in Qualifying Marks
Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
SC, ST, OBC, MOBC | Up to 5% in HSSLC or graduation marks |
PWD(PH) | Up to 5% in HSSLC or graduation marks, with at least 40% disability certified by the competent authority |
For example, a reserved-category candidate with 45% in HSSLC and a 2-year D.El.Ed meets the Paper I requirement, while a General candidate needs 50%. This relaxation applies to eligibility; the separate relaxation in TET qualifying marks is explained on the Assam TET qualifying marks page.
Is There an Age Limit for Assam TET?
Neither the 2021 nor the latest Assam TET advertisement sets a minimum or maximum age. Age limits apply later, when you apply for a teaching post. The DEE Assam Lower Primary advertisement of January 2025 used these limits, counted as on 1 January 2025:
Category | Age limit at recruitment (DEE LP, 2025) |
|---|---|
Unreserved | 18 to 40 years |
Ex-servicemen | Up to 42 years |
OBC / MOBC | Up to 43 years |
SC / ST(P) / ST(H) | Up to 45 years |
Persons with Disability | Up to 50 years |
Recruitment limits can change with each advertisement, so check the current one on dee.assam.gov.in before you rely on these figures.
Final-Year Candidates
The 2021 advertisement allowed candidates holding the final-year admit card of an NCTE or RCI recognised teacher education course to apply, provided they completed the course before applying for a job. The latest advertisement asked candidates to upload the pass certificate of their professional qualification and did not mention final-year candidates. Treat this as a cycle-specific rule and check the notification each time.
Who Is Not Eligible
Non-residents: Candidates who are not permanent residents of Assam.
Below the percentage bar: Candidates below 50% in Senior Secondary or graduation where the route requires it, after any 5% category relaxation.
Without a recognised professional course: Candidates with no D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed, B.Ed or other qualifying teacher education course.
B.Ed holders for Paper I in the latest cycle: Graduation plus B.Ed was not a listed route for Lower Primary in the latest advertisement.
Documents are not verified at the exam. They are checked when a qualified candidate applies for a teaching post, and a false claim of qualification can lead to criminal liability. Once you are sure you are eligible, review the Assam TET exam pattern and the Assam TET overview for fees and dates. You can also use online tests on Testkart to check your level in pedagogy and language before the next cycle opens.
