Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test

Entrance examination for BITS Pilani campuses

BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test) is the computer-based entrance test that BITS Pilani conducts for its integrated first-degree programmes at the Pilani, K K Birla Goa and Hyderabad campuses. Through BITSAT you can get into B.E. programmes, B.Pharm and integrated M.Sc. programmes. Admission is decided on your BITSAT score alone, provided you meet the Class 12 marks requirement.

As of October 2026, the BITSAT 2027 information bulletin has not been released. BITS has indicated that the 2027-28 first-degree admission cycle is expected to open in December 2026. Until the bulletin is out, this page uses the BITSAT 2026 bulletin as the base and marks every 2027 item as expected or tentative. It covers dates, eligibility, the exam pattern, syllabus, fees, cut-offs and how to prepare.

BITSAT 2027 Notification: What to Expect

BITS usually releases the BITSAT information bulletin in December, with registration for Session 1 opening at the same time. For the 2026 cycle, registration opened on 15 December 2025. The bulletin sets out the exam dates, fee, eligibility, syllabus, test centres and the admission procedure for all three campuses.

When the BITSAT 2027 bulletin is released, check three things first: the eligibility year of passing, any change in the number of questions or the extra-questions rule, and the fee for one or both sessions. These are the details that changed most often in recent cycles.

Seats and Programmes

BITS admits students to B.E. branches such as Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Instrumentation, Mathematics and Computing, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil and newer branches like Environmental and Sustainability Engineering. It also offers B.Pharm and integrated M.Sc. programmes in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, Physics and Semiconductor and Nanoscience. Not every branch is offered at every campus.

BITS does not publish a vacancy notice like a recruitment exam. The number of seats per programme appears in the bulletin and admission documents. Check the BITSAT 2027 bulletin for the confirmed programme list for each campus.

BITSAT Eligibility

Educational qualification

  • Subjects: Class 12 (or equivalent) from a recognised central or state board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for B.E. and M.Sc. programmes. B.Pharm and B.E. Environmental and Sustainability Engineering also accept Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

  • Marks: At least 75% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (or Biology), with at least 60% in each of the three subjects.

  • Year of passing: For BITSAT 2026, candidates had to pass Class 12 in 2025 or appear for it in 2026. For 2027 the expected window is 2026 or 2027, to be confirmed in the bulletin.

Age limit

BITS does not prescribe an age limit for BITSAT. Eligibility depends on your Class 12 year and marks.

Other conditions

  • Board toppers: First-rank holders of central and state boards in the science stream can get direct admission irrespective of their BITSAT score, subject to the conditions BITS publishes each year.

  • Current BITS students: Students already studying at a BITS campus are not eligible to apply again through BITSAT.

The BITSAT 2026 fee is shown below. The 2027 fee will be confirmed in the new bulletin.

Part II

Part III

English Proficiency (10) and Logical Reasoning (20)

Part IV

40

120

Total

3 hours, no sectional time limit

130

390

Each correct answer earns 3 marks and each wrong answer costs 1 mark. Unattempted questions score zero. If you answer all 130 questions and still have time, you can opt for 12 extra questions, but you cannot go back to the first 130 after that.

What this means for you

  • Speed decides rank: 130 questions in 180 minutes gives you under 1.5 minutes per question, so accuracy at speed matters more than solving a few very hard problems.

  • Mathematics carries the most weight: 120 of the 390 marks come from Part IV, so it deserves the largest share of your time.

  • English and Reasoning are scoring: 90 marks come from Part III, and these questions are usually quicker than PCM.

BITSAT Syllabus Summary

Subject

Important areas

Physics

Mechanics, rotational motion, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism and EMI, optics, modern physics

Chemistry

Atomic structure, bonding, thermodynamics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, organic reaction mechanisms, p, d and f-block elements

Mathematics

Algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, calculus, vectors and 3D geometry, probability, statistics, linear programming

English Proficiency

Grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, composition

Logical Reasoning

Verbal reasoning (analogy, classification, series, logical deduction) and non-verbal reasoning (patterns, figures)

Selection Process

  1. Take BITSAT: Appear in Session 1, Session 2 or both. If you take both, the better of the two scores is considered.

  2. Apply for admission: Submit your Class 12 marks and programme preferences on the admissions portal within the stated window.

  3. Admission iterations: BITS runs several iterations of seat allotment, based on BITSAT score and preferences. In 2026 there were nine iterations between June and August.

  4. Confirm the seat: Pay the fee by the deadline of each iteration to hold or upgrade your offer, and report to the campus.

If more candidates have the same BITSAT score than the seats available, BITS uses PCM marks to break the tie.

How to Prepare for BITSAT 2027

  • Build on your board and JEE preparation: The PCM syllabus overlaps heavily with Class 12 boards and JEE Main, so you do not need a separate plan for concepts.

  • Train for speed: Practise solving direct, formula-based questions in under a minute. BITSAT rewards quick recall more than long derivations.

  • Do not ignore Part III: Spend 20 to 30 minutes a day on English grammar, vocabulary and reasoning puzzles from at least three months before the exam.

  • Plan your attempt: Decide in advance how many questions you will attempt in each part and when you will skip, because of the negative marking.

Mock tests

Start full-length mocks two to three months before Session 1 and take at least one a week, moving to two or three a week in the final month. After each mock, list wrong and slow questions and revise those topics before the next attempt. For timed practice in the current pattern.
